23、Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

An apprenticeship is a form of on-the-job training that combines workplace experience and classroom learning. It can last anywhere from one to six years, but four years is typical for most. An apprentice spends the majority of the time in a workplace environment learning the practical skills of a career from a journeyman--someone who has done the job for many years. The rest of the apprentice's time is spent in a classroom environment learning the theoretical skills the career requires. Being an apprentice is a full-time undertaking.

One of the advantages of apprenticeship is that it does not cost apprentices anything. The companies that hire them pay for school. What's more, it offers apprentices an "earn while you learn" opportunity. They usually start out at half the pay of a journeyman, and the pay increases gradually as they move further along in the job and studies. Near the end of the apprenticeship, their wages are usually 90 percent of what a journeyman would receive. Apprenticeship also pays off for employers. It can offer employers a pool of well-trained workers to draw from.

Despite the advantages, apprentices are usually required to work during the day and attend classes at night, which leaves little time for anything else. Sometimes, they might be laid off(下崗)if business for the employers is slow.

Once they have completed the apprenticeship and become journeymen, they receive a nationally recognized and portable certification and their pay also increases again. Some journeymen continue employment with the companies they apprenticed with; others go onto different companies or become self-employed contractors.

A busy life can be personally satisfying, but it may make you feel too tired to achieve the inner peace that will connect you with your true happiness. Begin with simplifying your life and working towards a more peaceful state of mind.

Recognize the differences between the things you need and the things you want. Our culture provides us with the message that materials will make our lives better. The reality is that most of these things will complicate our lives without bringing true happiness. Free yourself-- learn to be satisfied with fewer materials and greater simplicity.

If you let someone else define your life, your’re missing the chance to follow your own desires. Your inner life is weakened when you are limited by conformity. Why do you give up your freedom and allowed all of your decisions to be defined by what others think you “should” do? Think for yourself. Let your passions be your guide.

Life is full of opportunities to earn money, give services. Learn new skills and make new friends. Some of us want them all and fill up our timetable with all kind of activities. Rushing from one activity to another leaves you with no time to slow down. No matter how worthy you think your activities are, rethink them. Keep the ones that are most important and leave out the ones that are adding to the pace of your life with little return.

Life is forever changing, and you will never reach a point of simplicity and endless happiness. But each moment you spend on the path to simplicity does have the possibility to bring happiness to your life.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.
Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here’s how:
1. Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
2. Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
3. Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say. Really listening in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
4. Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
5. Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

Garlic (大蒜) is one of the most common spices of the kitchen, and the good news is that growing garlic indoors is simple. Garlic can be easily grown at home from individual cloves (瓣), which is the most commonly used form of cultivating garlic than growing garlic from seeds. Here are some useful tips on growing garlic indoors.
Autumn is the best time to plant garlic. Garlic requires enough time to develop strong roots. In warmer climate, it can be delayed to late winter or early spring.
Ensure the container used to grow garlic is large enough for the roots to have enough space to grow. The larger the size of the container, the healthier and bigger the garlic bulbs (鱗莖) will be. The container should also have holes at the bottom so that the water can drain (流走) out easily.
Sow each clove vertically into the soil at a depth of one inch. Ensure that the bluntend (平端) is facing downward. In case of container gardening, the number of cloves to be sowed in each container depends on the size of the container. In case you are planning to sow more than one clove in each container, make sure that each clove is at least 5 inches apart from others.
For the best growth of the garlic plant, choose a sunny spot where there is enough air circulation (流通). This will aid evaporation (蒸發(fā)) of too much amount of water and prevent the soil from becoming too damp in case too much watering does occur. Window sill (窗臺(tái)) is a good place to put your container of garlic plant.
Once the clove has been sowed, cover the soil with a layer of mulch (覆蓋物) to protect the roots from extreme cold. Provide fertilizer at the correct time in right amounts, and proper watering. Once the garlic tips start appearing in the spring season, pull back the layer of mulch. Feed the plants once or twice every month with fertilizer.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

People in the United States honor their parents with two special days: Mother’s Day, on the second Sunday in May, and Father’s Day, on the third Sunday in June. These days are set aside to show love and respect for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer a chance to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home. More fathers must help with child-care.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On Mother’s Day people wear carnations. A. red one stands for a living mother. A. white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services(宗教儀式)to honor parents. It is also a day when people whose parents are dead visit their graves(墳). On these days, families get together at home and in restaurants. They often have outdoor BBQs for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories.

Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are valued more than the ones bought in stores. It is not the value of the gift that is important, but it is “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakeries, telephones companies and other stores do a lot of business during these holidays.

Some people succeed, while others may not. This is because some people possess certain qualities, which others do not.

The first thing you must remember is that in order to succeed, you must be optimistic. If you do not expect to win, you will not try as hard as those who do expect to win. You also need to have a clear aim and a reason for doing something because motivation is a key to achieving success. If you do not have an aim, then you will not be motivated to work hard and put your performance under the microscope to make sure that every detail is right.

Another quality that helps people succeed is creativity---considering things in a different way and wondering how others would do the same thing. Think about some successful people you know. They might be successful with a little creativity, but the most successful people are the most creative ones.

Reading is another key to success, as it helps you learn about how other people have achieved success. If you want to learn how to set up a successful business, you should read books about successful people like Bill Gates, who have achieved amazing success in their areas of business.

Practising is equally important if you want to succeed because practice makes perfect. Practise every day at whatever career you are in, and by doing so, you will see yourself, your business and your self-confidence begin to grow. If you feel confident about what you do, this confidence will make other people believe in you as well. Your colleagues will be happy to work with you, and your boss will give you more responsibility. Finally if you are a successful person, you will be able to look people in the eye and smile confidently.

The first mobile telephones used a system, or network, called 1G. It was the "first generation" of
technology. This allowed one person to call and talk to another person, but that was all. By the early
1990s, the second generation, or 2G network, came into use. It allowed talking and sending text
messages. By that time, cell phones were much smaller and cost much less.
Thirdgeneration mobile phones are known as 3G. Data speed in 3G networks is much quicker. This
means users can have highspeed Internet access and enjoy video and CDquality music on their phones.
"Mobile data is not a dream; it's not an option but a requirement," said Len Lauer, head of a US
communications company, Sprint PCS, at a 3G conference in Bangkok earlier this month.
With 3G, you can forget about text messages telling you yesterday's news; a 3G phone can receive
video news programs, updated four times a day. Internet access will also be much quicker, making it easier to surf the Web on your phone than on your computer at home.
Don't worry about getting lost. 3G phones offer map services so you can find a new restaurant just by
pressing a few keys on your handset.
However, the most impressive part of 3G technology is video calling. With live twoway video
communication, you can have facetoface talks with friends and family on your mobile phone.
Within the past two years, the 4G network has come into use. It permits cell phones to work much
faster and have much more information. Modern cell phones can even act as small televisions. They can
show movies and live sporting events.
As the networks have gotten more complex, the telephones have gotten smaller, lighter and less costly. Many electronics stores in the United States even give away the newest cell phones. But customers must agree to pay to use the network that sends their calls from one place to another.
It is interesting to imagine what the 5G and 6G network cell phones of the future will be able to do.

Learning style theory suggests that different people have different ways of obtaining information and use
various methods to demonstrate (證明) their intelligence and ability. Although experts have many ideas and
categories of learning, it is evident that people learn in three basic styles.
When learning something new, if you prefer to read the information, you are probably a student who
learns through seeing. These learners like to see teacher's facial expressions and body language clearly and
rend to sit at the front of the classroom. They take detailed notes, think in pictures and can most easily absorb
information from textbooks with diagrams, graphs, photographs and drawings.
Students who find it easiest to learn a new concept by hearing a teacher explain it are learning through
listening. Reading aloud, using a tape recorder, hearing anecdotes (趣聞) and talking things through are the
best methods for these learners to acquire new information. They give close attention to both the content of
the discussion and the way that things are said, such as how the sound of the voice and speed of speech
show the mood of the speaker.
Learning through doing means being active in exploring the environment and finding out about things by
moving and touching. Students who have this learning style take a hands-on approach to education and enjoy
experiments or surveys. They do not like to sit still for long periods of time and sometimes find it hard to
concentrate when reading or listening.
Teachers study people's various ways of learning as part of their training. They select a variety of
activities to suit their students' different learning styles. However, restrictions of time, space and resources
often make it impossible for teachers to provide the best exercises for all learners. If you are aware of you
own learning style, there is a lot you can do personally to improve your study skills and find the most
appropriate ways to approach your study tasks. As a result, you will be able to manage your own learning
and study more effectively.
