I looked at my beautiful Christmas tree and sighed. It was time. The New Year was a week old and my tree still stood in the corner of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights. I’d procrastinated(拖延,耽擱)long enough.

I got up, went to the garage and dragged all the boxes into the room. The garland(花環(huán))was the first to come down. The tree looked naked(光禿禿的)already. I took the large ornament(裝飾物)off next. They made a large pile on our bed. An hour later, our bed was covered with Christmas memories. Each pile contained an ornament along with its matching brothers and sisters from sets purchased many years ago.

I prepared the boxes and carefully placed ornaments in their protective packaging, pausing every few minutes to admire a favorite. “Hey, little Santa!” I held the Santa from my childhood. “Thanks for being my friend for almost fifty years.” He was a little ragged but still gives me a flood of wonderful memories. “Until next year, my dear friend.”

There was a collection of handmade ones. My children made in the their first years of school, more than twenty years ago. Made by tiny hands, they are far from perfect in design, but every year they go on my memory tree-memories of young giggles(咯咯地笑)on Christmas morning and a smiling face when they handed them to me when I came home from work. “Look what we made, Daddy!”

“Oh! It is beautiful. Let’s find a special spot on the tree for it.” Every year since, they are displayed.

A few hours after I started, the filled boxes were back in the garage, the room was vacuumed(用吸塵器清掃)and I sat staring at a barren(空蕩蕩的)corner. The room seemed so empty. It took me two days of work to assemble(收集)and decorate my tree, but only a few hours to take it apart.

My tree is like a good marriage or a great friendship. Like the tree, they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories, but can be torn down quickly.

Every year I have to put my tree away, but not my marriage or friendships. I take great care of those. They get to glow in the corner of my life for as long as I live. I get to analyze my tree and find memories for a few weeks every year. I can do the same with the loves in my life every day. Take great care of your friendships and your marriage. Once they come down, they aren’t as easy to put back together as a Christmas tree. Stand them in that special spot in the corner of your heart and admire their glow.

1.In the author’s eyes, the Christmas tree      .

A.is a collection of childhood memories

B.is a symbol of long-lasting relations

C.takes too much time to decorate

D.is full of out-of-date ornaments

2.To the author, a Christmas tree is similar to a good marriage in that      .

A.both take time to build but fall apart easily

B.both remind him of bittersweet memories

C.both need to be admired for some time

D.both get less attractive over the years

3.What is the main theme of the article?

A.We’d better put away Christmas decorations and recycle them each year.

B.Friendships and marriages should be valued and managed carefully.

C.Memories with friends and family should be cherished and relived.

D.We should decorate Christmas trees with personal stuff and recycle.

Although they may not die from lack of love, adults also need a great amount of affection (友情) and companionship. In the past, many people spent their entire lives in the communities in which they were born and raised. Many more people continued to live with their parents, brothers and sisters after they were married and had children of their own. By remaining in familiar communities with relatives nearby, families had enough opportunities for friendly contact and for support in time of trouble.

Recent studies suggest that family arrangements in Western societies have not changed as much in the last few centuries as is generally believed. Yet most sociologists agree that in modem societies, there are fewer opportunities for friendship and support from relatives outside the immediate family. Parents and children often live apart from other relatives, and seldom visit them. Also, the family moves when a parent accepts a job in another place or when it decides to live in a better neighborhood. Together, loneliness and mobility (遷移) force immediate family members to depend heavily on one another for affection and companionship.

Because the family is one of the few ongoing sources of affection and companionship in modern societies, a high percentage of people continue to marry, even though it is possible for a single man and woman to live together without marrying. On the other hand, because affection and companionship have become so important, families are more likely to break up if the husband's or wife's emotional (情感的) needs are not met within the family circleeven if all other family functions (功能) are being satisfactorily performed, and in this sense, affection and companionship have become the touchstone of the modern family.

1.It is generally believed that ________.

[ ]

A.many people spend their lives in familiar communities

B.a(chǎn) person can easily get in touch with relatives in times of difficulty

C.the organization of the family has changed a great deal

D.western societies have not changed much in the past few years

2.Sociological studies show that ________.

[ ]

A.the more the family moves, the less support it gets from its distant relatives

B.parents and children live together to make up for the lack of relatives outside the family

C.family arrangements have changed and so there is little need for companion of relatives

D.family members are separated from each other because of lack of support from relatives

3.The word “touchstone” in the last paragraph may be replaced by ________.

[ ]

A.result
B.trouble
C.function
D.standard

4.In the last paragraph, the writer mainly wants to say ________.

[ ]

A.a(chǎn)ffection and companionship are important for the family and they can be gained from nowhere but the family

B.a(chǎn)ffection and companionship can come from the family and at the same time safeguard the family

C.there are few ways to gain affection and companionship but the best way to get them is from the family

D.in modern societies a lot of families break up and it's just for a lack of affection and companionship

In 1955, a man named Raymond Kroe entered a partnership with two brothers named McDonald. They opened a popular restaurant in California which sold food that was easy to prepare and serve quickly. Hamburgers French fries, and cold drinks were the main food there. Kroc opened similar eating places under the same name, “McDonald’s”, and they were an instant success. He later took over the company, and today it is one of the most famous and successful “fast-food” in America and round the world.

Why was his idea so successful? Probably the most important reason was that his timing was right. In the 1950s, most married women stayed home to keep house and take care of their children. In the 1960s, many women returned to the workplace. This meant that they had less time or energy to prepare meals, so they spent more on “TV dinners” and fast-food restaurants. Single parents also have little time to spend in the kitchen. People living alone also depend on this type of food, since cooking for one is often more trouble than it is worth.

Fast-food is not part of the diet of all Americans. Another trend of the 1960s, sometimes called the back-to-nature movement influenced many people to avoid food that was packaged or processed(處理). This preference for natural food continues to this day.

Form the success of Raymond Kroc’s fast-food business, we can say that social economic(經(jīng)濟)trends influence where and what we eat.
