Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart(購(gòu)物手推車).They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know—or even think to ask—who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N.Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937.At that time he was in the supermarket business.Every day he would see shoppers lugging(吃力地?cái)y帶) groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts.“Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket?” one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet.He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try.To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的) customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come—those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model.Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937—before the coming of the shopping cart.

Scientists have determined it's not advisable to hurry marriage. But what's the best age to wed?
When Avril Lavigne announced she was splitting from her husband, comments from her friends suggested that she was only 21 when she tied the knot and later she said that she realized she'd been too young to make such a life-altering decision.Could fellow young celebrity divorcées(離婚者) Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, and Britney Spears have also hit the same age-related issue?
The Magic Number
There are practical reasons for the mid-20s dividing line, and most of them boil down to two biggies: education and money.
It turns out that the more years of higher education a woman has under her belt on her wedding day, the lower the chances that she'll get divorced ...a(chǎn)nd by 25, you're more likely to have earned a degree or two.Educated women tend to be more confident about who they are and less willing to settle for a man who doesn't meet their standards.
Odds(可能性) are that by 25 you're also supporting yourself, so there's less incentive(刺激; 鼓勵(lì))for you to rush into marriage because you're seeking financial security from him.But the marriage-related benefits of working and having money of your own go beyond feeling secure.Learning to budget your cash carefully when you're single will help you avoid financial problems-one of the main causes of couple fights-for the rest of your life.
Knowing the Real You
At 25, you've had time for some crucial life experiences, including a relationship or two that may have improved your Mr.Right radar. You've probably dated enough to have a better idea of what you don't want in a man, which makes it easier to know what you can live with and can't live without.
Perhaps the most important aspect of waiting is that you'll know what your goals and values really are. While you don't want to marry someone just like you, marriage is a lot easier if you two share a similar outlook on life.
Twenty-four and already married to the man of your dreams? Don't worry: Many young marriages survive. But given the choice, you might consider putting off the big day until your mid-20s or later.
What main factors influence the mid-20s dividing line? (No more than 3 words)

According to the author, why does a couple probably fight?(No more than 4 words)

Why should you keep exercising even when cold temperatures make you want to hide under the covers? With the temperatures dropping at this time of year, many of us tend to hibernate (冬眠) inside our homes. But, hibernating is for bears. As humans it’s important to stay active through all four seasons. Yet, a poll of 5,000 people found that 30 percent get no exercise at all during the winter months.
Just because it is cold outside it is no excuse not to exercise. There are many exercise choices one can choose to take part in regardless of the cold weather. Depending on your location and likes, you can choose to exercise inside or outside.
All that is required for winter-time exercise is some planning and the following of some safety tips. If you prefer to exercise outside, keep the following tips in mind.
Get warm first. A proper warm-up is critical. Cold temperatures can make your muscles tight and therefore they are easier to be injured. So, it’s important to get them warm-up before intense (激烈的) physical activity.
No sweat. Don’t assume that you have to sweat in order to get a good workout. You should avoid sweating that causes the clothing layer closest to your skin to get wet and cause you to be cold.
Don’t undress when you get inside. While you may want to immediately remove your layers when returning inside, you should give your body time to adjust.
Drink up. It’s just as important to stay hydrated (含水的) when exercising in winter as it is in summer, even though you might not feel as thirsty.
Be seen. If possible, it’s best to exercise outdoors during daylight areas. If you exercise outdoors when it is dark, wear reflective (反光的) materials to ensure that you can be seen.
By staying fit during winter, you’ll be able to avoid gaining weight and losing strength caused from inactivity.

Richard Wagner was a German musician who lived in the mid-19th century. He gained fame by writing opera, a form of performance combining singing, music on instruments, and drama.
Wagner’s life and work have been very controversial(有爭(zhēng)議的).While he wrote excellent music, many people think his operas are too dark and serious, lacking tile fun common in operas written before his time.
Wagner, on the other hand, thought the opera of his time was too simple. He wanted to make opera a serious form of art that combined drama and music to tell deep stories that would have a strong effect on the audience.
Some people thought Wagner’s new kind of music was too different from the operas they were used to hearing.Wagner agreed with them.In fact, he didn’t call his works “operas” at all, using instead a German word that means “Musical Festival” or “Musical play”.
While many people today still do not like Wagner’s operas, they cannot deny that Wagner had a lot of influence on opera as a form of art.Wagner invented the tradition of turning off the lights before starting a play.He also was the first person to make the whole audience sit down for an entire play.Today, almost all operas are performed in this manner.
Wagner as a man was even more controversial than Wagner as a writer of music. He hated Jewish people, slept with his friends’ wives, and made many people angry, which we would today think of as evil. Some would say he was a good musician, while others would say that he was a bad musician. But it would be difficult to say he was not an important person in music and in the world.

In a time of low academic achievement by children in the United States, many Americans are turning to Japan, a country of high academic achievement, for possible answers. However, in most Japanese preschools, surprisingly little emphasis is put on academic instruction. In one investigation, 300 Japanese and 210 American preschool teachers, child development specialists, and parents were asked about various aspects of early childhood education.Only 2 percent of the Japanese respondents (答問(wèn)卷者)listed "to give children a good start academically" as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools. In contrast, over half the American respondents chose this as one of their top three choices. To prepare children for successful careers in first grade and beyond, Japanese schools do not teach reading, writing, and mathematics, but rather skills such as persistence, concentration, and the ability to function as a member of a group. The vast majority of young Japanese children learn to read at home with their parents.
In the recent comparison of Japanese and American preschool education, 91 percent of Japanese respondents chose providing children with a group experience as one of their top three reasons for a society to have preschools.Sixty-two percent of the more individually-oriented (強(qiáng)調(diào)個(gè)性發(fā)展的) Americans listed group experience as one of their top three choices. An emphasis on the importance of the group seen in Japanese early childhood education continues into elementary school education.
Like in America, there is diversity in Japanese early childhood education. Some Japanese kindergartens have specific aims, such as early musical training or potential development. In large cities, some kindergartens are attached to universities that have elementary and secondary schools. Some Japanese parents believe that if their young children attend a university-based program, it will increase the children's chances of eventually being admitted to top-class schools and universities.Several progressive programs have introduced free play as a way out for the heavy intellectualizing in some Japanese kindergartens.

Facts are sometimes more unusual than fiction. The following case makes Agatha Christie's plot look like children's literature.
The medical inspection of Ronald Opus's body showed that he died from a shot gun wound of the head.He had jumped from the top of a ten-storey building intending to commit suicide. As he fell past the ninth floor, a shotgun blast through a window killed him instantly.Neither the shooter nor Opus knew that a safety net had been put up at the eighth floor level to protect some window washers and that Opus would not have been able to complete his suicide anyway because of this.
The room on the ninth floor where the shotgun blast went through was occupied by an elderly man and his wife. They were arguing and he was threatening her with the shotgun. He was so upset that when he pulled the trigger(扳機(jī)), he completely missed his wife and the pellets(小子彈)went through the window, striking the falling Opus.
The old man said it was his long-term habit to threaten his wife with the unloaded shotgun. He had no intention to murder her. Therefore, the killing of Opus appeared to be an accident. That is, the gun had been accidentally loaded.
The continuing investigation turned up a witness who saw the old couple's son loading the shotgun approximately six weeks before the fatal incident. It turned out that the old lady had cut off his son's financial support and the son, knowing the habit of his father to use the shotgun threateningly against his mother, loaded the gun with the expectation that his father would shoot his mother.
Further investigation revealed that the son had become increasingly depressed over the failure of his attempt to engineer his mother's murder. This led him to jump off the ten-storey building, only to be killed by a shotgun blast through a ninth floor window.
The case was closed as a suicide.

Like fine food, good writing is something we approach with pleasure and enjoy from the first taste to the last. And good writers, good cooks, do not suddenly appear full-blown.Quite the contrary, just as the cook has to undergo an intensive and hard-working training, mastering the skills of his trade, the writer must sit at his desk and devote long hours to achieving a style in his writing, whatever its purpose-schoolwork, matters of business, or purely social communication. You may be sure that the more painstaking the effort, the more effective the writing and the more rewarding.
There are still some remote places in the world where you might find a public scribe(抄寫(xiě)員)to do his/her business or social writing for a fee. There are a few managers who are lucky enough to have the service of that rare kind of secretary who can take care of all sorts of letter writing with no more than a quick note. But for most of us, if there is any writing to be done, we have to do it ourselves.
We have to write school papers, business papers or home papers. We are constantly called on to put words to paper. It would be difficult to count the number of such words, messages, letters, and reports put into the mails or delivered by hand, but the daily figure must be enormous. What is more, everyone who writes expects, or at least hopes, that his writing will be read.We want to arouse and hold the interest of the readers. We want whatever we write to be read, from first word to last, not just thrown into some "letters-to-be-read" file(檔案)or into a wastepaper basket. This is the reason we make our efforts toward learning and practicing the skills of interesting, effective writing.

These days, the word “emo” is used in the US for a range of different kinds of people, from those who are depressed to those who have long hair.If you prefer to keep things to yourself, this isn't called “ being shy” any more; it's called being an “emo”.If you often wear dark colors-such as black-instead of bright or happy ones, you're in an “emo” way.If you're male and have long hair, you're an “emo”.This one word seems to cover all sorts of different personalities, styles and ways of behaving.
Why does this word have such a vast range of meanings? How was it even made up?Well, “emo” is short for “emotional”, so obviously it was originally meant to describe over-emotional people.Yet somehow it came to take on meaning that seem to be quite remote from this one.I like to wear black a lot, for reasons of personal taste, not because I have any problems.I also have long, naturally dark hair. It's long just because I prefer long hair, and I am in a band. Also, I'm not a very talkative person, because most of the time I'm occupied with writing songs, or something along those lines. In any case, all of this has caused people to start calling me an “emo”.
Let me tell you what I think a real “emo” is, however.I think an “emo” is somebody who is constantly depressed, and always lets other people see his sadness or other negative feelings.I'm just tired of people who aren't really “emo” being called that just because of their appearances, and not based on any knowledge of what they're really like.
