Australians have been warned they face a life or death decision over their water — drink recycled sewage or die.
With the drought continuing, the country is set to be forced to use purified waste water for drinking, even though there is great opposition to the measure. Queensland has become the first state to introduce the policy after a warning from its premier. "I think in the end, because of the drought, all of Australia is going to end up drinking recycled purified water," said Peter Beattie. "These are difficult decisions, but you either drink water or you die. There's no choice. It's liquid gold; it's a matter of life and death." Beattie said Australia's second largest state would become the first to use recycled water for drinking.
Water is recycled in Britain and parts of northern Europe along with the US and Israel. But Australians have never liked the idea. To try to change the way Australians think, Prime Minister John Howard and Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull have backed Queensland's move. "I am very strongly in favor of recycling and Mr. Beattie is right and I agree with him completely," Howard said. Turnbull added that Australian cities, all now facing water shortages because of the worst drought on record, must start to use recycled water. "All of our big cities have to widen the range of water sources to include sources which are not dependent on rainfall," he said.
Water is recycled in the following countries EXCEPT ___________.
A. Australia B. U.S. C. Israel D. Britain
Which of the following is true?
A. Queensland is the biggest state of Australia.
B. The drought is getting more and more serious in Australia.
C. People in the U.S. like to drink recycled water.
D. Australians prefer to die rather than drink purified sewage.
The underlined word in Paragraph 2 is similar to the meaning of _____________.
A. pure B. recycled C. drinking D. waste
What can be inferred from the passage?
A. All Australians oppose to the using of recycled water.
B. Prime Minister first put forward the idea of recycling water.
C. Australians probably have to drink recycled water in the near future.
D. Australia has experienced worse drought before in history.
What may be the best title of the passage?
A. Sewage Water: it’s Life or Death B. Australians Oppose Sewage Water
C. Recycling Water in Queensland D. Premier Calling for Purified Water

Every activity of our lives is communication of a sort, but it is through speech that man asserts his distinctness from other forms of life. He alone, of all animals, has the gift of verbal communication and it is through the quality of his speech that he best expresses his own individuality , his essence. When he is unable to say clearly what he means, through either nervousness, timidity, or foggy thought-processes, his personality is blocked off, dimmed out, and misunderstood.
Business, social, and personal satisfaction depend heavily upon a person’s ability to communicate clearly to his fellow men what he is, what he desires, and what he believes in. And now, as never before , in an atmosphere of international tensions, fears, and insecurities, we need the channels of communication between peoples kept open. It is my hope that The Quick and Easy Way to Effective Speaking will be helpful in all these ways, both to those who wish simply to function with greater ease and self-confidence in practical pursuits, and to those who wish to express themselves more completely as individuals seeking a deeper personal fulfillment.
