Back in September of 2005, on the first day of school, Martha Cochran, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School, did something unforgettable. On the first day of school, with permission of the school headmaster, she took all of the desks out of the classroom.
The kids came into the first period. They walked in, and there were no desks. They looked around and said, "Ms Cochran, where are our desks?" And she said, “You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn them.”
They thought, "Well, maybe it's our grades.”
"No," she said.
"Maybe it's our behavior."
And she told them, "No, it's not even your behavior."
Second period, the same thing. Third period... By early afternoon television news reporters had gathered in Ms. Cochran’s class to find out about this crazy teacher.
The last period of the day, Martha Cochran gathered her class. They were at this time sitting on the ground floor around the sides of the room. "Throughout the day no one has really understood how you earn the ordinary desks in this classroom." she said, "Now I'm going to tell you."
Martha Cochran went to the door of the classroom and opened it, and as she did, twenty-seven adults, who were fathers or mothers of the kids, walked into that classroom, each one having a school desk. And they placed those school desks in rows. And when they finished placing those desks, those kids for the first time in their lives understood how they earned those desks.
Martha said, "You don't have to earn those desks. They did it for you. They put them out there for you, but it's up to you to sit here responsibly to learn, to be good students and good citizens, because they paid a price for you to have that desk, and don't ever forget it!"
1.Why did Cochran take all the desks out of the classroom?
A. Because she wanted to punish the kids.
B. Because she wanted to let kids know how they earned the desks.
C. Because kids didn't need any desks at her classes.
D. Because the desks were all broken.
2.Who get kids to have a chance to get education?
A. Teachers. B. The headmaster.
C. Kids themselves. D. Kids’ parents.
3.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the text?
A. Kids finally understood what their teacher meant by themselves.
B. The headmaster supported Ms. Cochran’s idea.
C. Kids studied without desks on the first day.
D. Kids' parents earned the desks for them.

Most people who live in Seattle, Washington, love their city. There is a never-ending flow of fun things to do. But, people who live there do not always enjoy the day-after-day absence of sunshine during the winter months.
It is documented fact that sunshine (or lack of it) plays a major role in how each of us meets the day. It also affects how we perform at school or work. When people are derived of sunlight, they can develop seasonal affective disorder, which makes it difficult for them to feel happy or get things accomplished. No major city in the United States is more affected by the “sunshine factor” than Seattle.
To fight drizzle and fog during the winter months, Steve Murphy created a business that is very popular among the locals. The Indoor Sun Shoppe is more than a little ray of sunshine during the gray days of Seattle’s winter. His shop offers a huge source of plants and artificial lighting for people who are trying to overcome seasonal affective disorder.
Located in Fremont, Washington, The Indoor Sun Shoppe has an amazing collection of exotic plants and “good bugs” in a humid and well-lit environment. At The Indoor Sun Shoppe, you can spend up to $400 for artificial lighting that will chase away the winter blues. It will also keep your plants healthy. You can buy a dawn simulator that will gradually fill your room with a warming wake-up glow. What better way to meet a Seattle morning when real sunshine is nothing more than a happy thought!
Murphy’s in-home waterfalls are also popular with customers. But his plants and lights remain the “main course.” On a cloudy winter day, The Indoor Sun Shoppe is a bright spot in Seattle!

Last year, I took a sightseeing trip to Washington D. C. I saw many of our unfortunate and homeless fellow citizens on the street.
Standing outside the Ronald Reagan Center, I heard a voice say, “Can you help me?” When I turned around, I saw an elderly blind woman with her hand extended. Immediately, I pulled out all of my loose change and placed it on her hand without even looking at her. I was annoyed at being bothered by a beggar. But the blind woman smiled and said, “I don’t want your money. I just need help finding the post office.”
In a moment, I realized what I had done. I acted with prejudice(偏見)— I judged another person simply for what I thought she had to be.I hated what I saw in myself. This incident re-awakened my belief in humility(謙卑)I’d lost for a moment.
The thing I had forgotten about myself is that I am an immigrant. I left Honduras and arrived in US at 15. I started my new life with two suitcases, my brother and sister, and a strong, no-nonsense mother. Through the years, I have been a doorkeeper, roofer, cashier, mechanic(技工)and pizza delivery driver among many other humble(卑微的)jobs, and eventually I became a network engineer.
In my own life, I have experienced many open acts of prejudice. I remember a time, at age 17 — I was a busboy, and I heard a father tell his little boy that if he did not do well in school, he would end up like me. So I know what it’s like, and I should have known better.
But now, living in my American middle-class lifestyle, it is too easy to forget my past, to forget who I am, where I have been, and to lose sight of where I want to be going. That blind woman on the streets cured me of my self-induced(自我引發(fā)的)blindness. She reminded me of my belief in humility and to always keep my eyes and heart open.
59. How did the writer give the blind woman money?
A. In a modest way. B. In a polite way. C. In an impatient way. D. In a painful way.
60. According to the passage, the writer ________.
A. still lives a poor life. B. might be born in Honduras.
C. was busy with his work D. was a native of Washington D. C.
61. At the end of the story, the writer might ________.
A. help the lady to the post office B. say sorry to the woman and gave her more money
C. ignore the woman D. send the woman home

The story began with a young mother who had three sons. Unfortunately, the youngest son developed slow thinking skills, not having the intelligence of his brothers.
With double duty as the mother of the household, she was exhausted, so that the youngest was often the target of anger and annoyance. Bad words, such as “you little fool” and the like, served as a daily meal for the youngest.
The words and curses he got from the mother and ridicule from friends convinced him that he was distressing and embarrassing his family. Every morning he woke up with his own face staring from the mirror reflection, he started to say quietly and sadly, “The fool is going to school.”
As adult citizens, there was compulsory military service which should be lived. Thus, the youngest son also signed up and started to follow the various tests: a medical, physical ability test and other tests. On the day of the announcement, he was called into the board of examiners.
In his mind, he convinced himself that he was the fool and couldn’t pass the tests this time as he entered the room with his head down. It was not expected at all. The tests turned out to have the highest praise from the board of examiners.
“Congratulations, young man! Your test results are incredible! You are really a great and talented young man. ”Words from the board of examiners became the discovery of a new side of himself that was not known in advance. Voice kept echoing in his mind, such as “I, the great man, am in the shower”, “The great man washes his face”, “The talented young man again brushes his teeth” and so on. Confidence and improved self-image came beyond usual.
20 years later, the youngest established himself as a successful businessman who was admired and respected, and received many awards.

As one of your regular readers, I have always admired your policy of supporting the problems of the ordinary citizens of London. I hope, therefore, that you will find space to publish this letter. I live in a tower building in the East End of London, situated between two busy streets with a street market along its third side. Naturally we suffer from the traffic, noise, dirt and waste gas. However, behind us we have an open green space with shady trees which provides us with a
quiet pleasant place where we can enjoy our spare hours. We are mostly pensioners (領退休金的人) and there are very few children in the place.
Our local government has recently planned to make use of this site for a short time as a play centre for about 100 children. Although all the people who live there are strongly against the plan, the government have totally taken no notice of us and have already started pulling up our trees and grass, in spite of the fact that there is a disused school and playground with in 100 meters which would suit their purpose equally well. I should be glad to hear from other readers who have had similar problems and might be able to advise us on what action we should now take.
