Beverley had been feeling dull, bored and a bit out of it. He mentioned his mood (state of mind) when going to Andrew for a sports massage. He wondered whether he should take up Tai Chi. But Andrew didn’t think so.
“Tai Chi is great for people who want to feel grounded, but that isn’t your problem,” he said. “What you need is something more exciting, like dancing.”
In future, therapists (理療專家) may well suggest that you fight your sadness with a course in kickboxing, and family doctors might suggest that you take a rest in the mountains instead.
We’ve long been aware that exercise has benefits beyond the physical ones; that activity can relax you, and help psychological well-being by reducing stress, anxiety and sadness.
Now some trainers and sports psychologists are going further and examining how to identify the correct exercise for a client’s (當(dāng)事人) specific state of mind and personality.
Professor Stuart Biddle, an exercise and sports psychologist based at Loughborough University, England, has researched the effects of exercise on moods.
One of his findings was that, if your problem is low self-esteem, weight training should be your bag. “Working with weights builds strength,” he says, “and creates a stronger body image.”
Anger management, meanwhile, demands bursts of explosive (爆發(fā)性的) activity, from sports such as boxing or tennis.
This is because anger makes the body release(釋放)adrenaline (腎上腺素), which causes heart rate and blood pressure to rise and muscles to become tighter —— the physiological changes required if you are to defend yourself.
Research shows that the “punch-bag (用拳頭擊打沙袋)” method of releasing disappointment and anger through hitting a boxing opponent (對(duì)手) or tennis ball, can help with fighting issues.
They have also found that teamwork is good for self-esteem and that those who are brought together to work in a social setting become more lively.
Which type of exercise will best help is, of course, down to the individual. Clearly, before you can find the best physical activity for yourself, you have to know your needs.
Ask yourself a few questions such as: What do I need in my life? Which issues are difficult for me? Am I sad or troubled? Only then can you decide whether you need taking up, or taking down.
1. Why did Andrew think Beverley shouldn’t take up Tai Chi?
A. Because Beverley was too weak. B. Because Beverley was too foolish.
C. Because Beverley’s mind was out of control. D. Because Beverley lacked activity.
2. Which of the following is true according to the passage?

B. People have already realized the relationship between exercise and spirits.
C. Boxing and tennis are the best ways to increase one’s self-esteem.
D. Trainers and psychologists don’t agree with each other on exercise.
3. Professor Stuart Biddle thinks that ____ .
A. anger should be examined by doctors B. anger should be taken away by medicine
C. anger should be given off by activities D. anger should be held back by oneself

The golden autumn leaves are fitness reminder for us all. This is the time of year trees takes it off, and people put it on – weight that is.
“It is a rainy Saturday in November. Shall I go for my regular run or get a cup of hot chocolate and watch a DVD on the couch?” When you are faced with these kinds of choices, staying fit takes a will of iron. But there are plenty of ways to stay healthy and fit while enjoying the good things about winter. Here are some tips:
Watch your diet. First things first – keep an eye on what you eat. Experts recommend vegetable soup as a quick, healthy warm – up meal. Just watch serving sizes – we tend to eat whatever’s in our bowls. Stews can be both filling and fattening. Use loads of fresh vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage and leeks, and not so much meat and potatoes. Avoid eating while watching TV. Never bring the whole bag or bowl of anything to the sofa. Measure it into small portions beforehand.
Keep exercising. Winter’s arrival doesn’t mean we should stop exercising. Exercise makes you feel good, and helps you keep colds and flu away. The weather change only means we need to adjust our routines. Remember that it gets darker earlier. Make adjustments by joining a gym, planning evening walks in the neighborhood or becoming an early riser. Plan some family/ friends fun time. One great way to stay healthy in winter is joining in team sports such as volleyball, basketball or soccer. The exercise and team spirit are hard to beat, but watch out for the hotpot part afterward. Take a class. Something like yoga or belly dancing is all you need to get out of the house once or twice a week. Plan to go with friends, that way you’ll motivate each other. Start a routine. The amount of exercise you need to stay fit isn’t actually all that much. Just 20 minutes a day is all you need. Exercise should be vigorous enough to raise your heart rate. So take the stairs instead of the lift. Go swimming. Grab sunny days for an outing.
By keeping your fitness levels up over the winter, you’ll find you feel better and get less colds. And you’ll be ready welcome next summer with delight – instead of a diet.
1.Which of the following statements is NOT true in the writer’s opinion?
A.People had better do something to keep fit when they see the golden autumn leaves.
B.People usually gain weight when the leaves are falling.
C.It’s easy to choose between regular running and watching a DVD on a rainy November day.
D.There are many good things to do even in winter.
2.If you don’t want to gain weight, you’d better .
A.eat whatever in our bowls B.take vegetable soup before a meal
C.eat while watching TV D.try stews
3.In order to keep exercising in winter, you’d better do the following except .
A.make adjustments of your routines B.get up earlier
C.take part in team sports D.enjoy the hotpot party
4.Which can be the best explanation of the underlined word “vigorous”?
A.Energetic B.Cruel C.Mild D.Gentle.

Doctors in Britain are warning of an obesity time bomb, when children who are already overweight grow up. So, what should we do? Exercise more? Eat less? Or both? The government feels it has to take responsibility for this expanding problem.
The cheerful Mr Pickwick, the hero of the novel by Charles Dickens, is seen in illustrations as someone who is plump --- and happy. In 18th century paintings beauty is equated(使等同) with rounded bodies and soft curves. But nowadays being overweight is seen as indicating neither a cheerful character nor beauty but an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
So what do you do? Diet? Not according to England's chief medical officer, Sit Liam Donaldson. He says that physical activity is the key to reduce the risks of obesity, cancer and heart disease. And the Health Secretary John Reid even said that being inactive is as serious a risk factor in heart disease as smoking.
So, having bought some cross trainers how much exercise should you do? According to Sir Liam Donaldson, at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. Is going to the gym the answer? Luckily for those who think that running machine are boring, the Health Development Agency believes that physical activity that fits into people's lives may be more effective. They suggest taking the stairs rather than the lift, walking up escalators, playing active games with your children, dancing or gardening. And according to a sports psychologist. Professor Biddle, gyms "are not making the nation fit", and may even cause harm.
There's new scientific evidence that too much exercise may actually be bad for you. Scientists at the University of Ulster have found that unsuitable exercise releases dangerous free radicals that can adversely affect normal function in unfit people. The only people who should push their bodies to that level of exercise on a regular basis are trained athletes.
So, should we forget about gyms and follow some expert's advice to reduce sedentary activities and increase exercise in our daily life? After all, getting off the bus a stop early and walking the rest of the way can't do any harm! One final thought. How come past generations lacked gym facilities but were leaner and fitter than people today?
1 Mr Pickwick and paintings beauty of 18th century are used as examples to show that ________.
A. fatness was considered something good at one time
B. a fat man is a cheerful character
C. beauty should be overweight
D. fatness leads to an increased risk of diseases
2. According to Sir Liam Donaldson, which of the following should we do?
A. Regular physical activity. B. Going on diet.
C. Giving up smoking. D. Going to the gym.
3. The underlined phrase cross trainers probably refers to ________.
A. people who help you do exercises B. a place where you can do exercises
C. a vehicle D. a kind of shoes
4 From the passage, we know ________.
A. the more exercises you do, the healthier you will be
B. active games are better than gyms for people who want to keep fit
C. going to the gym is a good way to lose weight
D. too much activity will help you lose weight quickly

Millions of people take part in a variety of aerobic activities and gradually thousands of health spasm developed around the country to gain interest in fitness particularly aerobic dancing for females. A number of fitness spasm existed before this aerobic fitness movement, even a national chain with spasm in most major cities. Historically most physical-fitness tests have usually included measures of muscular strength and endurance not for health-related reasons but primarily because such fitness parts have been related to performance in athletics. However, in recent years facts have shown that training programs designed primarily to improve muscular strength and endurance might also offer some health benefits as well. The American College of Sports Medicine now recommends that weight-training be part of a total fitness program for healthy Americans. Increased participation in such training is one of the specific physical activity and fitness objectives of Healthy People 2000 National Health Promotion. (促進(jìn))
