Custom tattooed fish (紋身魚) may be big sellers at markets, but an animal expert say it is a cruel and potentially lethal practice.

In Laitai Flower and Fish Market near the Lufthansa Center in Beijing, four of over 20 fish stores sell marine ornamental fish that are tattooed using laser (激光)  guns with beautiful images in order to make them more attractive to customers. Many people just love these kinds of fish, which gives them a unique visual impression. The price of these fish ranges from 50-100 yuan. Some customers are willing to pay an additional 100 yuan to have Chinese characters tattooed on to the fish. The most popular characters are “zhaocai” (attracting fortune) and “ill” (blessing). The color of tattooed fish won’t fade away, and the fish can be cared for as regular fishes:

But Ye Zhenjiang, a professor from the Ocean University of China, said “the practice would damage a fish’s mackerel scale, which is its protective layer Although I haven’t done any research on the impact of the laser on mackerel scale, it is obvious that the mackerel scale may be infected or even destroyed under the exposure of laser,” Ye said. “It’s like tattooing a human being’s body, and it breaks the physiological balance of the fish and damages: the skin’s protective surface, It may even cause death among fishes which have thin mackerel scale.”

A specialist in aquatic(永生的) animal study surnamed Xu from the Beijing Fisheries Research Institute, said, “We have no specific regulations to prevent fish from being tattooed. An official surnamed Bai from the Fishery Surveillance and Administration Bureau(FSAB), said there is no study showing that the laser threatened a fish’s health. He said a regulation on small animal protection, to be passed in the near future, doesn’t include regular aquatic animals. He said the institution is only responsible for aquatic animals that are on the verge of extinction. He said tattooed fish are mainly from south China’s Guangdong province because Beijing does not have the laser technology to tattoo a fish.

“It’s too brutal to tattoo pictures or characters on fishes, even if it makes them more beautiful,” many tropical fish buyers told METRO yesterday. “We would never buy fish like that and we prefer them with natural beauty.”

Every year there are changes in climate in different parts of the world. Some of these changes are due to natural causes. However, some climate changes are caused by air pollution and these changes may increase.

If the pollution affects the level of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) in the atmosphere, the results are likely to be serious. Carbon dioxide has only a small part of the atmosphere. But it has an important function in keeping the balance between radiation from the sun entering the atmosphere and radiation leaving the Earth. Some of the radiation is absorbed by the Earth and some is radiated back into the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide in the atmosphere prevents some of the radiation from leaving the atmosphere. Thus the heat remains in the atmosphere and carbon dioxide helps to prevent the temperature of the Earth from falling.

If the proportion of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is increased as a result of air pollution, the temperature of the atmosphere may rise. This might cause the ice in the North and the South to melt. If this happened, the sea level could rise and parts of the Earth would be flooded, This happening is not quite likely but the possibility exists.

There is also a fairly strong possibility that the dust level in the atmosphere will rise as a result of industrial pollution. This dust pollution will reflect sunlight hack into space. If this happens less sunlight will reach the Earth and the temperature will fall.

Another danger comes from the destruction of the Earth’s vegetation (植物) such as the forests of Brazil, which are being cleared away for farmland and cities. Trees use carbon dioxide and their destruction may upset the balance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

1.The main purpose of this passage is to tell us that ________.

[ ]

A.the climate of the world is always changing

B.a(chǎn)ir pollution has greatly affected the climate of the world

C.carbon dioxide has something to do with climate dangers

D.the climate of the world is subjected to (使受到) dangers from air pollution

2.From this passage we learn that carbon dioxide ________.

[ ]

A.helps to prevent the temperature of the Earth from rising

B.keeps much of the sun’s radiation from entering the atmosphere

C.plays an important part in keeping the balance of the temperature of the Earth

D.is one of natural causes of climate changes

3.Judging from this passage, if the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere went down, the temperature of the Earthwould ________.

[ ]

A.become higher
B.either rise or fall
C.become lower
D.neither rise nor fall

4.Which of the following is not the possible serious outcomes of air pollution related to climate changes?

[ ]

A.Parts of the Earth would be flooded one day.

B.Less sunlight would reach the Earth.

C.The temperature of the Earth might rise.

D.The Earth’s vegetation might be destroyed.

5.It is obvious that the author ________.

[ ]

A.is for the opinion that the climate changes are due to natural causes

B.a(chǎn)fraid that air pollution will greatly change the climate of the would

C.hopes that more studies should be made on the worlds’s climate

D.suggests that steps be taken to prevent the destruction of the Earth’s vegetation

Classified advertising is the advertising which is grouped in certain sections of the paper and is thus distinguished from display advertising . Such groupings as “Help Wanted”, “Real Estate (房地產(chǎn))” , “Lost and Found” are made , the rate charged being less than for display advertising . Classified advertisements are a convenience to the reader and a saving to the advertiser. The reader who is interested in particular kinds of advertisements finds all advertisements of that type grouped for him . The advertisers may , on this account , use a very small advertisement that would be lost if it were placed among larger advertisements in the paper . It is obvious that the reader approaches the classified advertisement in a different frame of mind from that in which he approaches the other advertisements in the paper . He turns to a page of classified advertisements to search for the particular advertisements that will meet his needs . As his attention is very voluntary , the advertiser does not need to rely too much extent on display to get the reader’s attention .

Formerly all classified advertisements were of the same size and did not have display type . With the increase in the number of such advertisements , however , each advertiser within a certain group is competing with others in the same group for the reader’s attention . In many cases the result has been an increase in the size of the space used and the addition of headlines and pictures  . In that way the classified advertisement has in reality become a display advertisement . This is particularly true of real estate advertising .

1.Classified advertising is different from display advertising because        .

A.a(chǎn)ll advertisements of a certain type are grouped together

       B.it is more distinguished

       C.it is more expensive

D.nowadays the classified advertisements are all of the same size

2.According to the writer , what sort of attitude do people have when they look at classified advertisements ?

A.They are in the frame of mind to buy nothing .

B.They are looking for something they need .

C.They feel lost because there are so many advertisements .

D.They feel the same as when they look at display advertisements .

3.What does the writer say about the classified advertisements that used to be put in the papers ?

A.They used to be voluntary .                  B.They use to use display type .

C.They were all of the same size .            D.They had headline and more pictures .

4.Why have classified advertisements changed in appearance ?

A.Because people no longer want headlines and pictures .

B.Because real estate advertising is particularly popular now

2,4,6

C.Because the increase in the number of such advertisements means they have to be small now .

D.Because there are more advertisements now and more competition among advertisers .

The entire family enjoys reading the recipes(食譜) in the magazine, as well as the Styles section.

The Times is great, but the Gazette is another story. I’ve never read an article that doesn’t contain at least three or four spelling or grammatical errors. For instance, in last week’s issue you misspelled the word “secretary”, used a singular verb with a plural noun, and used “it’s” as a possessive (所有格). And that was just in the lead story! In case you never went to elementary school, “it’s” means “it is ”.It’s also a possessive adjective!

It’s a pity that this tiny little hick(鄉(xiāng)下) town has only one newspaper, because I’d like to have an alternative(替換物) to the rag you publish. I find it hard to believe your news stories. If you can’t spell correctly. How can you get your facts right?

“Congratulations, Mr. Jones, it’s a girl.”

Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different answer from every

Man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers.Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.

Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the shift from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task.Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this remobilization process.Although numerous books have been written about American mothers, only recently has literature focused on the role of a father.

It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father‘s role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother‘s role. The mother‘s role seems to require complete transformation in daily routine and highly innovative adaptation; on the other hand, the fathers role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we mentioned the fact that growing number of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.

According to the author, being a father_________.

A.brings a feeling of excitement to some men

B.has a different meaning for those who have daughters

C.makes some men feel proud and others uneasy

       D.means nothing but more responsibilities

The transition to the mother‘s role requires that the wife__________.

A.change her lifestyle in a highly innovative way

B.make a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation

C.stay at home to take care of the baby

D.help her husband in his remobilization process

Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, ___________.

       A.have to shoulder more burdens

B.have to make more difficult adaptations

C.have an easier job to do

D.can usually do a better job

“Congratulations, Mr. Jones, it’s a girl.”

Fatherhood is going to have a different meaning and bring forth a different answer from every man who hears these words. Some feel proud when they receive the news, while others worry, wondering whether they will be good fathers. Although there are some men who like children and may have had considerable experience with them, others do not particularly care for children and spend little time with them. Many fathers and mothers have been planning and looking forward to children for some time. For other couples, pregnancy(懷孕) was an accident that both husband and wife have accepted willingly or unwillingly.

Whatever the reaction to the birth of a child, it is obvious that the change from the role of husband to that of father is a difficult task. Yet, unfortunately, few attempts have been made to educate fathers in this re-socialization process. Although many good books have been written about American mothers, only recently have some books discussed the role of a father.

It is argued by some writers that the transition to the father’s role, although difficult, is not nearly as great as the transition the wife must make to the mother’s role. The mother’s role seems to require a complete transformation of daily routine and adaptation to a new life, on the other hand, the father’s role is less demanding and immediate. However, even though we have mentioned the fact that growing numbers of women are working outside the home, the father is still thought by many as the breadwinner in the household.

According to the author, being a father _______.

A. brings a feeling of excitement to some men

B. has a different meaning for those who have daughters

C. makes some men feel proud and others uneasy

D. means nothing but more responsibilities.

It is stated in the passage that ________.

A. some parents are not prepared to have a child

B. young couples do not like children at all

C. working couples do not have much time to take care of their children

D. many parents look forward to having a boy as their first child

The transition to the mother’s role requires that the wife _______.

A. changes her life style in a quite different way

B. makes a complete change in her everyday life to deal with the new situation

C. stays at home to take care of the baby

D. helps her husband in his re-socialization process

Some writers argue that with respect to the change of roles, fathers, compared with mothers, _______.

A. have to do more in the household   B. have to make more difficult adaptations

C. have an easier job to do           D. can usually do a better job

To the Editor,

I have been reading your newspaper, the Hometown Gazette, for the past two years, ever since I moved to Smithville. We moved here from New York City, so I am accustomed(習(xí)慣的) to reading excellent newspapers such as The New York Times . In fact, we still have the Times delivered on Sundays.

I’ve been meaning to get this off my chest for some time. Please cancel my subscription(訂閱). And buy yourself a dictionary.

                                                    Sincerely,

                                                    Jane Z, Jones

1. Which phrase from the passage shows the writer’s prejudice(偏見)?

   A. get this off my chest

   B. three or four spelling or grammatical errors

   D. reading the recipes in the magazine

2.The author’s tone in this passage can best be described as

   A. happy        B. angry       C. sympathetic(同情的)         D. objective

3.Which statement of the following is not true according to the passage?

   A. The writer once lived in New York City, so he was used to reading the Times.

   B. The entire family enjoys reading the Styles section in the mafazine.

   C. The writer has long been planning to express his dissatisfaction with the local newspaper

   D. It is obvious that the editors of the newspaper are not very careful about their work.
