Street Markets around the World
There are many ways of shopping. You can shop by telephone, by post or through your home computer, but for many people, the most exciting way to shop is also the most traditional—at a street market. You can find markets anywhere in the world. Here are four of them:
There are many "floating markets" in Asia; perhaps the most unusual is in Thailand, at a place called Damnoen Saduak. It's open from six in the morning to the noon every day. People sell fresh fruit from their boats.
Many Belgians(比利時(shí)人) say that the Grand Place is the most beautiful square in the world. It is the home of a colorful flower market. It's open every day except Monday. On Monday, instead of flowers, there's a wonderful bird market!
One of the world's most famous markets is in Mexico City (墨西哥城)—the Sonora Market. You can buy toys, birds, herbs and medicine. There are all kinds of things. It's open every day from early in the morning till late at night.
In England, every weekend, thousands of young people from all over London travel to the Camden Market—it's the place to go for street fashion, CDs and tapes. Many people also go there for fun.

SPACE is a lonely place. Hundreds of thousands of kilometers from home, astronauts have a hard life. It stands to reason that, once in a while, they need to have a good cry. But this is a lot harder than it sounds.
We still know very little about space, and about living in zero gravity. In fact, we are discovering new things every time astronauts take to the skies (and beyond). As The Atlantic reported in January, crying is not all that simple in space. This is because when a person normally cries, gravity makes their tears move downwards. But in a spacecraft, this is not the case. Here, there is no gravity, which is why we so often see pictures of astronauts floating around. This means that, strangely, when you cry your tears have nowhere to go. As a result, they just stick to your eyes.
In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this. “Tears,” as he said, “don’t fall off your eye… they just kind of stay there. ” This can be quite painful. In space, your eyes get very dry, and the added moisture is irritating (氣人的). Sometimes, things get even weirder(更怪異的). The astronaut Ron Parise told The Atlantic that when tears get big enough, they “break free of the eye and float around”.
No one can be quite sure why we cry. Why should water in our eyes have anything to do with feeling sad? If you stop to think about it, crying is a very strange thing indeed. And now, thanks to the wonders of space, it just got even stranger.
【小題1】The first paragraph mainly wants to tell us that .
| A.living in space is lonely |
| B.it’s easy to feel sad in space |
| C.it’s hard to cry in space |
| D.nobody wants to live in space |
| A.move downwards | B.move upwards |
| C.go out of the window | D.stick to their eyes |
| A.sad | B.comfortable | C.happy | D.uncomfortable |
| A.In space our eyes are very wet. |
| B.Tears will float around if they are big enough in space. |
| C.People know everything about living in zero gravity. |
| D.Gravity makes people’s tears move upwards in space. |

We attend rock concerts, weddings, parties and sports

A series of studies conducted in 2002 indicated that even moderate (緩和的) backgroun

classrooms on the noisy side of a school had lower reading scores
than those whose classes were on the quiet side.
Noise-induced (噪音誘發(fā)的) hearing
loss can come about in two ways: from a brief exposure to a very loud noise or
from consistent exposure to moderate-leve
l
noise. Thus, there is much concern about the lasting effects of MP3 players
that are turned up loud enough to block out surrounding sound, like street
noise. An MP3 player at maximum volume produces about 105 decibels(分貝)— 100 times as severe as 85 decibels, where hearing
damage begins.
So, before buying noise-making toys, parents would do
well to listen to how loud they are. If the item comes w
ith
a volume control, monitor its use to make sure it is kept near the lowest
level. Consider returning gifts that make loud noises, or disable the
noise-making functio

Children who play computer games and stereo equipment should be w
arned
to keep the volume down. Most iPads have a control that allows parents to set a
maximum volume.
Avoid taking children to loud action movies. If you do go and the sound seems deafening, ask the management to turn down the volume or insist on your money back.
The League for the Hard of Hearing urges parents to encourage participation in quiet activities, like reading, doing puzzles, making things with construction toys, playing educational computer games, drawing and painting, and visiting libraries and museums.

Can you imagine astronauts' everyday life in space? They also need to eat, sleep, exercise and relax. They do the same things as us, but they do them differently.
On Earth, we put food on a plate. Gravity holds the food down and keeps it on a place. But there is almost no gravity in space, so food can float (漂?。゛way, and astronauts must eat carefully.
Sleeping is very different in space. Some astronauts like to float in the air, but most like to be in a sleeping bag. They tie the bag to a wall so that they won't float away at night.
Exercise is very important in space. On Earth, your legs carry your body, but in space, astronauts float, so they do not use their legs often. This is very bad for their legs, so they must exercise for thirty minutes every day.
After a day's work, astronauts relax. They may listen to music, read, watch films, play games, or talk to their friends and families on the radio. Sometimes they just enjoy floating in the air.

Much meaning can be carried, clearly, with our eyes, so it is often said that eyes can speak. Do you have such kind of experience? In a bus you may look at a stranger, but not too long. And if he notices that he is being stared at, he may feel uncomfortable.
The same in daily life! If you are looked at for more than necessary, you will look at yourself up and down, to see if there is anything wrong with you. If nothing goes wrong, you will feel angry toward others’ stare(盯著)with you that way. Eyes do speak, right?
Looking too long at someone may seem to be impolite or even rude. But things are different when it comes to stare at the opposite sex. If a man look at a woman for more than 10 seconds and refuses to turn away from his looking, his purpose is obvious, that is, he wishes to attract her attention, to make her understand that he is admiring her.
However, the normal eye contact for two people during a conversation is that the speaker will only look at the listener from time to time, in order to make sure that the listener does pay attention to what his friend is speaking, to tell him that he is interested.
If a speaker looks at you continuously when speaking, as if he tries to control you, you will feel uncomfortable. We usually find a poor liar(說謊者)looking too long at the victim, because he believes that it is a sign of honest communication to look straight in the eye. Totally wrong!
In fact, continuous eye contact only happens between lovers, who will enjoy looking at each other gently for a long time, to show feelings that words cannot express. Obviously, eye contact should be done according to the relationship between two people and the proper situation.

Rita stepped into the cool, moving water. She pushed a black inner tube(內(nèi)胎) in front of her. She had a worried look on her face because she had never floated down a river before.
“Let me hold your tube while you climb on,” said her father. He smiled at her. “There’s not a cloud in the sky. It’s a great day to be in the river, isn’t it?”
Rita looked out across the water. People were floating by on tubes. Some talked and laughed as they floated easily down the river. Others leaned(倚靠) back with hats pulled over their faces. None of them looked terrified.
“We’ll stay together,” said Rita’s father. “I’ll hold on to your rope(繩子).”
“Will we go very fast?” Rita asked.
“No,” said Dad. “We’ll move slowly for a while, and then it will get a little faster near the river’s bend(拐彎). Don’t worry, Rita. You’ll be fine.”
Rita looked at her tube. It gently(輕輕地) moved up and down in the water. She saw a girl of her own age float by. The girl seemed to be having fun. Suddenly Rita’s worries disappeared(消失).
“I’m ready to climb on and ride, Dad,” she said.
