Gaby Lucy is just a 17-year-old American girl, but she has experienced life in the Dominican Republic as a volunteer. When she recalls her time volunteering there, she doesn’t think about the fact that she had no running water and lived in a small house outside. Instead, she remembers fondly the people she met, the work she did with a youth group to improve accessibility to a local library and the leadership skills she gained.

American teens are setting an example to their parents through their volunteer work, according to a new survey by Harris Interactive. The random national telephone survey released this week found that more teens volunteer to support a charitable cause(慈善事業(yè)) – 56 percent – than have a part-time job –39 percent.       “Silent night” is anything but silent in China. Some Chinese people have turned Christmas Eve into a wild party night for the young. I assure you that the holiness of this holy night is totally lost here.

I noticed this year that some Chinese people were picking up Thanksgiving as well. They do without the turkey, but on Thanksgiving they send text messages to each on the cell phone. I got 32 messages in all, reminding me to be thankful. None of them thanked me for anything, however. I did not send any out. I still want a turkey (with lots of stuffing) and pumpkin pies.

The most ridiculous Western holiday celebrated in China, however, is Valentine’s Day. The Chinese translation is “Lovers’ Day”. I dare say it is the worst of the year for married men because they think it awkward to spend “Lovers’ Day” with their wife. But women here take Valentine’s Day very seriously. All the audiences were greatly puzzled and begged him for an explanation. He said, “There has been a way of moving mountains; what you can do is to go to the mountain if it doesn’t come.”
One of my friends, though with the makings of a merchant, was bent on being a painter. He resigned from office and devoted himself entirely to painting at home. Several years, however, saw no progress in this regard.
A painful retrospection (回顧) brought him to his senses. He made up his mind to take up business in place of painting. It took him only a few years to become a rich businessman. Meanwhile he spent his spare time exchanging experience and skills in painting. His works finally won acclamation by expert painters and were on sale in art gallery and grand hotels. He had his collections published and his dream of becoming a painter came true at last.

閱讀表達(dá)(共5小題;每小題3分,滿分15分)

閱讀下面短文,并根據(jù)短文后的要求答題(請注意問題后的字?jǐn)?shù)要求)。

(1) Hello. It’s one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it’s one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That’s unfortunate, because saying hello is more than just saying hello—it is recognition of another’s worth. How might the world change—how might we change—if we mastered this word? To find out, I spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here’s what I’ve learned.

(2) It can boost (促進(jìn)) productivity. In one of the few studies ever done on this subject, Allan

Allday, an assistant professor of special education at Oklahoma State University, had middle school teachers greet their students individually each morning. This exchange of greetings raised the kids’ productivity. School went from impersonal to personal, and that resulted in more class participation and better grades.

(3) Environments influence friendliness, One study found that people in the city were kiss likely to one hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. And researchers say, pleasure environments generally encourage more smiles and hellos than unpleasant ones. My experience was similarly. Whatever the reason, my urban hellos were answered far less often than my rural one. Similarly, people in vacation spots, like the Jersey Shore, were far friendlier than those hurrying work downtown.

 (4) It’s a form of universal health insurance. It’s impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure, relieve stress and boost happiness. Apparently, a smile creates a similar effect in the recipient (接受者)。

(5)So maybe we can make the world a better place by____________. After a month of doing it. I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of well-being.

What does the author say about the adults according to Paragraph 1? (within 8 words)

 _________________________________________________________________________

Which sentence in the text is the closest in meaning to the following one?

Teachers and students got friendlier so that the students became more active in learning and scored higher in tests.
