There are two types of twins : identical and non-identical twins. Identical twins are formed from a single egg in the mother's body which divides to form two separate babies. Identical twins look the same, and are often dressed by their parents in clothes of the same colors. It is often difficult to tell identical twins form each other, even when they are standing side by side. Non-identical twins come into being when the mother produces two separate eggs at the same time, both of which grow to form babies. In this case the twins look like normal brothers and sisters and are easy to tell one from the other.
In the 1970s and 1980s a scientist did some research into twins. He invited many pairs of identical twins to university and asked them to take part in a week of tests. He was particularly interested in adopted (收養(yǎng)) twins who had been separated at birth. He would give the twins different kinds of tests to study their speed of thinking, their speech, their memory, the ways they saw and heard different things, and so on. Time and time again he found separated twins who preferred clothes of the same color, used the same kind of shaving soap, wore the same shaped square glassed and the same colored socks.
There is a third type of twins, but it is a very unusual one. Twins which are joined together at birth are known in western countries as Siamese twins.

When several different people look at the same person, it is not unusual for each of them to see different things; when you alone observe one behavior or one person at two different times, you may see different things. The following are but some of the factors that lead to these varying perceptions (感知,認(rèn)知):
(1) Each person's perceptions of others are formed by his or her own cultural conditioning, education, and personal experiences.
(2) Sometimes perceptions differ because of what we choose to observe and how we deal with what we've observed. It is not necessarily true that person perception is based on observations of a particular person. Your observations may be totally controlled by what others have told you about this person; or you may focus (聚焦) primarily on the situation or role relationship. Most people do not use the same yardstick (標(biāo)準(zhǔn)) to measure their parents, their friends, and strangers.
(3) Sometimes we see only what we want to see or don't see what may be obvious to others because of our own needs, desires, or temporary emotional states. This is a process known as selective perception. Selective perception is obviously more difficult when contradictory (矛盾的) information is particularly obvious, but it can be done. We can ignore (忽視) the stimulus -He's basically a good boy so what I was not shoplifting.” We can reduce the importance of the contradictory information “All kids(孩子) get into mischief (頑皮). Taking a look from the bookstore isn't such a big deal. ” We can change the meaning of the contradictory information “It wasn't shoplifting because he was going to pay for it later.” …
1.The first factor given by the author that affects our perception is ________.
[ ]
A.the abilities of one's auditory (聽) and visual (視) sensors
B.cultural background and personal experiences
C.experiences one learns from others
D.critical measures taken by other people
2.While observing a particular person ________.
[ ]
A.one is likely to take all aspects (方面) into consideration
B.one pays more attention to his/her advantages
C.children often differ from grown-ups in perception
D.one tends to choose certain cues (提示) to look for
3.Observation of the same person by two people at the same time may differ because ________.
[ ]
A.their measuring yardsticks are not the same
B.either of them may be slow to catch information
C.the time for observation is not long enough
D.each of them uses different language to express his/her impressions
4.The word “stimulus” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.
[ ]
A.something attractive
B.selective perception
C.contradictory information
D.shoplifting
5.The worst thing in selective perception is that ________.
[ ]
A.pereived information runs against your desire
B.facts can be totally ignored or distorted (扭曲)
C.importance of the contradictory information can be overrated(估計(jì)過高)
D.the same information may not be dealt with in the same way

When a Japanese friend of mine first visited Britain and first saw a British map of the world, he was very surprised by what he found. At first, the picture seemed familiar(熟悉): in the middle of the map, there were two or three small but long red islands lying between an ocean and a continent. But something was wrong; land mass and ocean had changed places. It wasn't Japan he was looking at, it was the British Isles. Japan was out on the edge somewhere.
Until that moment all the maps he had known had set Japan in the middle of the picture and had colored it red; yet when he got to Britain, he found that the country in the middle of the map was Britain and that it, too, was painted red.
What my friend had found was a displacement(脫離原位)of his country, and, therefore, of himself as well. That is to say, his country was no longer in its familiar place and he no longer knew where he stood; he was disoriented.
Our sense of ourselves and our place in the world may not, as my friend's experience suggests, come from anything real or actual. for no country is in the middle of the globe, except as a picture in the mind. A map is only a model in which we may set ourselves, it just helps us to feel that we know where we are.

D.encouraged
2.On a British map of the world ________.

5.The main idea of this passage is that ________.
[ ]
A.human beings need maps in order to find the middle of the globe
B.Japanese visitors to Britain find that local maps give them sense of displacement
C.our sense of position based on familiar maps often helps to travel from place to place

Finland is perhaps the most beautiful and mysterious(神秘的)of the countries of northern Europe. Two-thirds of its surface is covered with thick forests and among them lies lakes, connected with rivers and canals. The northern part of this country is inside the Arctic Circle, where almost no trees can grow because of its cold weather and the people use their deer for transport, clothing and food.
The Finnish history began in the Middle Ages. In about 1155, Finland was conquered by its western neighboring Sweden. After a period of rule by Denmark in the 14th century, the Swedes won back independence and power in 1523 under their brave king. During the Napoleonic Wars(1814-1818)Finland was passed finally from Sweden to Russia. The opportunity came in 1917, when the Russian Revolution brought foreign rule of Finland to an end. Shortly after Soviet Russia made peace with Germany, 1919 saw the founding of the Finnish Republic.
The years between the First and second World Wars were years of progress and growing development. Finland has no coal or oil, and the nation's wealth lies in the timber(木材)from its forests, which supplies material for paper and furniture making, and in the electric power from its water.

When buying a house, you must be sure to have it checked for termites(白蟻). A termite is much like an ant in its communal(群居的)habits, although physically the two insects are different.
Like those of ants. termite colonies(群體)consist of different classes. With its own particular job. The most perfectly formed termites, both male and female, make up the reproductive class. They have eyes, hard body walls, and fully developed wings. A pair of reproductive termites founds the colony. When new reproductive termites develop, they leave to form another colony. They use their wings only this one time and then break them off.
The worker termites are small, blind, and wingless, with soft bodies. They make up the majority of the colony and do all the work. Soldiers are also wingless and blind but are larger than the workers and have hard heads and strong jaws and legs. They defend the colony and are cared for by the workers.

We must have water to live. If the water we use is not clean and fresh ,it can make us ill. The animals that live in and around lakes and rivers must also have clean water.
Our rivers and lakes supply most of our water. The clear, blue water found by the first American settlers has changed. Many of our water sources are now polluted. They are filled with dirt and waste which cannot be cleaned out. In many places, water is not safe for most uses.
Lake Erie was once a beautiful lake. Now it has been called "a dying lake". Waste from nearly homes and factories has dumped into it . Fish can no longer live in much of its polluted water.
George Washington once called the Potomac "the finest river in the world". Now its water is no longer blue. Instead, it is a soupy (羹湯類的) green. Suds (肥皂水) from detergents (清潔劑) used to wash clothes, often cover the water of our rivers.
Water cannot be made in a factory. Once water is polluted, it is hard to make it clean and safe. We must learn to take care of the water we now have.
1.Most of our water supply comes from ________.
[ ]
2.The words"a dying lake" in paragraph 3 mean ________.

There were two interesting pieces of news items in the paper a few years ago. One was about a man who received a bill from the telephone company for £2,000 a month for doing nothing.
The connection between the two news items is simple : computers -the best invention of the 20th century. The telephone bill came from a computer which made a terrible mistake ; that man's bill was only £23.26. The other item was not as amusing. A man walked into the unguarded computer room of a large packaged food company and expertly programmed the computer to pay him £2,000 a month for raw meat which he supplied to the company. Of course he never sent the meat, but he certainly received the money. The computer wrote out a bill, and even “signed” it. It was only a random (隨便的) check that uncovered the trick. It could be happening in thousands of other companies all over the world.
Computers are not the magical workers that some people say they are. They make mistakes they're sometimes slower than human beings and they're easily fooled.
The US used to conscript(征兵) people with the help of a computer. The army sent out a card, which had to be filled in and sent back. It was easy to avoid being called up simply by spreading candle-wax (臘) on the card. The computer couldn't read the card, and did nothing with it.
It's in our everyday life that computers cause many problems. Let's get back to using people instead of computers, before a mistake that we can't put right.
1.In the first paragraph we can conclude ________.

[ ]
A.the computers are magical workers
B.the computers can do anything as well as man
C.the computers can write out the bill and even sign it
D.the computers sometimes also make mistakes
3.Computers ________.
[ ]
A.were used to conscript people
B.a(chǎn)re usually faster than human beings
C.a(chǎn)re not so magical as people expect
D.were not easily controlled and always fooled human beings
4.The writer thinks ________.
[ ]
A.we'd better use people instead of computers in our everyday life

You know you have to read “between the lines” to get the most out of anything. I want to persuade you to do something equally important in the course of your reading. I want to persuade you to “write between the lines.” Unless you do, you are not likely to do the most efficient kind of reading.
I insist, quite bluntly, that marking up a book is not an act of damage but of love.
There are two ways in which one can own a book. The first is the property right you establish by paying for it, just as you pay for clothes and furniture. But this act of buying is only the first step to possession. Full ownership comes only when you have made it a part of yourself, and the best way to make yourself a part of it is by writing in it. A comparison may make the point clear. You buy a piece of beef and transfer it from the butcher's icebox to your own. But you do not own the beef in the most important sense until you eat it and get it into your blood. I am arguing that books, too, must be absorbed in your blood to do you any good.
There are three kinds of book owners. The first has all the standard sets and bestsellers-unread, untouched. The second has a great many books——a few of them read through, most of them dipped into, but all of them as clean and shiny as the day they were bought. The third has a few books or many-every one of them worn, shaken and loosened by continual use, marked and scribblied (涂寫) in from front to back.
Why is marking up a book necessary to reading it ? First, it keeps you awake. (And I don't mean only conscious; I mean wide awake.) In the second place, reading, if it is active, and thinking tends to express itself in words, spoken or written. The marked book is usually the thought-through book. Finally, writing helps you remember the thoughts you had, or the thoughts the author expressed.
1.The third kind of owners of books must be ________.
[ ]
A.experienced readers
B.untidy readers
C.a(chǎn)ctive readers
D.careless readers
2.Marking up a book means ________.
[ ]
A.writing down difficult sentences
B.finding the extra meanings of unknown words
C.writing in the space the ideas you get through careful reading
D.making notes to show you understand what you have read
3.What does the auther persuade you to mark ?
[ ]
A.Whatever you have given deep thought to while reading.
B.Words and sentences that bring up rich ideas.
C.Primary questions that challenge you.
D.Whatever disagreements you may have with the book.
4.A great advantage of marking up a book is ________.
[ ]
A.to absorb all the brilliant ideas it contains
B.to make yourself a part of it, making further inquiry (查詢) easy
C.to make yourself conscious that you are reading actively
D.to enable yourself to pick up the book for continual reading
