We are often asked to make a speech in life. Most of us are afraid of it and don't do a good job. Here are some simple steps to make your speech a successful one.First of all, find out everything you can about your subject and at the same time find out as much as you can about your audience.Who are they? What do they know about your subject? Put yourself in their shoes as you prepare your speech. Then try to arrange your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow.Use as many examples as possible.Never forget your audience.Don't talk over their heads or talk down to them. When you are giving your speech, speak slowly and clearly, look at your audience and pause for a few seconds from time to time to give your audience chances to think over what you've said.Just remember:be prepared, know your subject and your audience, say what you have to say and be yourself so that your ideas will bring you and your audience together.

After winning a big game, athletes are often asked how they attained that success. Most say their achievement is the result of gruelling hard work and intense practice.Usually athletes say how hard it is to win the big games. At the opposite end of the spectrum, however, is the fact that losing the big game, or, in my case, all the games, can be even tougher.

From the spectators’ point of view, last year’s basketball season for my high school team was nothing short of an embarrassment. And while 0 and 20 is certainly nothing to be proud of, that season had a bigger impact on me than any other, and probably more than any season since.

As a team captain, I knew it probably wouldn’t be the easiest year, but did I ever think we would lose every game? Of course not.Since six of our top players had graduated, it was clear that we were a young team who would struggle. The struggle began earlier than expected, though, as our team’s starting center was suspended for the season, and two key members decided to quit after two weeks. At some point, quitting probably passed through every player’s mind, but, in the end, we all stuck it out, vowing to work even harder.

Then there came a time when even our own coach had given up on us.Personally, I felt like it was no longer worth giving my all.I thought, if even the coach doesn’t believe in us, why should I? But just as my hope began to fade, a teammate called a meeting. He said,“Nobody thinks we’re going to win, and heck, we may not, but, as teammates and friends, we owe it to each other to give it our all every game.

閱讀理解

Lately, I am often asked about my favorite current TV show. The questioner is shocked to hear I rarely watch TV.Whether it is an at-home date night or some good time alone, I can always find something fun to do without the noise and distraction of a TV show. That's not to say there aren't times when I do turn to DVD's or the Internet to watch shows. It's just that there are so many things to do.

There are many games that are grown-up enough to hold my interest.Another activity that kills time is putting to use the building block sets I still have from my childhood. It's very satisfying to achieve a feat of engineering by the end of an evening. It's likewise great fun to create playful artwork by bedtime while avoiding overstimulation from electronic devices.

Nothing sucks up creativity like an entire evening spent watching TV.So, whether I'm in the mood to paint, play my flute, or make something out of clay, I make time to do it.I always hear people complain there isn't enough time to do what they want, but some are the same people who are shocked that I rarely watch TV.Considering their complaints, it is ironic that on June 22, 2011 the Bureau of Labor Statistics released the results of the American Time Use Survey and stated “Watching TV was the leisure activity occupying the most time(2.7hours per day), accounting for about half of leisure tine on average, for those aged 15 and over”.

Sometimes I just come home to find stillness and release the tensions of the day.I turn on neither TV nor the computer, but opt for yoga, a hot bath, a good book, or an early bedtime.Though it might seem extravagant(奢侈的)to go to bed around 9:00p.m., it can really make a difference.Especially when something is bothering me, the distraction of TV only complicates my thoughts, and I can better cope with the world if I just relax.

My evenings of rare TV are enjoyable. It's these evenings of play, creativity and relaxation that make a better-rounded lifestyle.

watching TV occupies too much of their time

B.

they spend too much time complaining

C.

they just don't bother to find the time

D.

they are too busy to spare time

(3)

We can conclude from the text that ________.

[ ]

A.

the author is only interested in adult games

B.

the author won't play the flute when he doesn't have time

C.

going to bed before 9:00 p.m.makes a person better deal with the world

D.

the author rarely watches TV and also doesn't watch shows on the Internet

It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man.College, career, and life itself got in the way.In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son.He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr.Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel(紀(jì)錄片)as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.

  “Jack, did you hear me?”

“Oh, sorry, Mom.Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him.I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.

Well, he didn't forget you.Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce(回憶)about the many days you spent over ‘his side of the fence' as he put it,” Mom told him.

“I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said.

“You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr.Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life,” she said.

“He's the one who taught me carpentry.I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him.He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important… Mom, I'll be there for the funeral,” Jack said.

Busy as he was, he kept his word.Jack caught the next flight to his hometown.Mr.Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before they had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time, which was exactly as he remembered.Every step held memories.Every picture, every piece of furniture… Jack stopped suddenly.

“What's wrong, Jack?” his Mom asked.

“The box is gone,” he said.

  “What box?” Mom asked.

“There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk.I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was ‘the thing I value most',” Jack said.

It was gone.Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box.He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.

“Now, I'll never know what was so valuable to him,” Jack said sadly.

Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his attention.

  “Mr.Harold Belser” it read.

Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope.Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

“Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life.” A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch.Running his fingers slowly over the fine cover, he opened it.

Inside he found these words carved:“Jack, Thanks for your time! Harold Belser.”

“Oh, My God! This is the thing he valued most…”

閱讀理解

When asked about happiness, we usually think of something extraordinary, an absolute delight, which seems to get rarer the older we get.

For kids, happiness has a magical quality.Their delight at winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved(毫不掩飾的).

In the teenage years the concept of happiness changes.Suddenly it's conditional on such things as excitement, love and popularity.I can still recall the excitement of being invited to dance with the most attractive boy at the school party.

In adulthood the things that bring deep joy-love, marriage, birth-also bring responsibility and the risk of loss. For adults, happiness is complicated(復(fù)雜的)

My definition fo happiness is “the capacity for enjoyment”.The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are. It's easy to overlook the pleasure we get from the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, and even goo health.

I experienced my little moments of pleasure yesterday.First I was overjoyed when I shut the last lunch-box and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids and my husband came home, I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

Psychologists tell us that to be happy we need a mix of enjoyable leisure time and satisfying work.I don't think that my grandmother, who raised 14 children, had much of either. She did have a network of close friends and family, and maybe this is what satisfied her.

We, however, with so many choices and such pressure to succeed in every area, have turned happiness into one more thing we’ve got to have. We’ve so self-conscious about our “right” to it that it's making us miserable. So we chase it and equal it with wealth and success, without noticing that the people who have those things aren't necessarily happier

Happiness isn't about what happens to us-it's about how we see what happens to us.It's the skillful way of finding a positive for every negative. It's not wishing for what we don't have, but enjoying what we do possess.

(1)

As people grow older, they

[ ]

A.

feel it harder to experience happiness

B.

associate their happiness less with others

C.

will take fewer risks in pursuing happiness

D.

tend to believe responsibility means happiness

C.

D.

(3)

B.

Psychologists’opinion is well proved by Grandma’case

C.

D.

[ ]

A.

B.

I used to watch her from my kitchen window. She seemed so small as she muscled her way through
the crowd of boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would
often watch the kids as they played during break. I remember the first day I saw her playing basketball.
I watched in wonder as she ran circles around the other kids. She managed to shoot jump shots just
over their heads and into the net. The boys always tried to stop her but no one could. I began to notice
her at other times, basketball in hand, playing alone.
One day I asked her why she practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation she said, "I want
to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I
want to be the best. My daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count. "Well, I had to
give it to her-She was determined. I watched her through those junior high years and into high school.
Every week, she led her school team to victory.
One day in her senior year, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms.I walked across the street
and sat down in the cool grass beside her. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came a soft
reply, "I am just too short." The coach told her that at 5'5" she would probably never get to play for a
top ranked team-much less offered a scholarship. So she should stop dreaming about college. She was
heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed her disappointment. I asked her if she had
talked to her dad about it yet. She told me that her father said those coaches were wrong. They just did
not understand the power of a dream. He told her that if she truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing
could stop her except one thing-her own attitude.
The next year, as she and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, she was
offered a scholarship and on the college team. She was going to get the college education that she had
dreamed of.

閱讀理解。
It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, carrier, and life itself got in the way.
In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of the dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life,
Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was
working on his future, and nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories
fleshed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days.
     "Jack, did you hear me?"
"Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. it's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly
thought he died years ago," Jack said.
"Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce (回憶)
about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it," Mom told him.
"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said.
"You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence
in your life," she said.
"He's the one who taught me carpentry. I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a
lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I'll be there for the funeral." Jack said.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral
was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.
The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door
one more time, which was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece
of furniture … Jack stopped suddenly.
"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked.
"The box is gone," he said.
     "What box?" Mom asked.
"There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand
times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most'," Jack said.
It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He
figured someone from the Belser family had taken it.
"Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him," Jack said sadly.
Returning to his office the next day, he found a package on his desk. The return address caught his
attention.
     "Mr. Harold Belser" it read.
Jack tore open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he
read the note inside.
"Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bernett. It's the thing I valued most
in my life." A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, and tears filling his eyes. Jack carefully
unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over
the fine cover, he opened it.
Inside he found these words carved:"Jack. Thanks for your time! Harold Belser."
"Oh. My God! This is the thing he valued most …"
Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his assistant and cleared his appointments for the
next two days. "Why?" his assistant asked.
"I need some time to spend with my son," he said.
1. Why did Jack think Mr. Belser died years ago?

B. Jack was too busy with his business and family to think about Mr. Belser.
C. Jack was too busy realizing his dreams to think about Mr. Belser.
D. His present busy life washed away his children memories.

A. Mr. Belser often asked how Jack was doing
B. Mr. Belser's funeral would take place on Wednesday
C. Mr. Belser had asked for Jack's mailing address
D. Mr. Belser had pleasant memories of their time together
3. Why did Belser send Jack his gold watch?
A. Because he was grateful for Jack's time with him.
B. Because he had no children or relatives.
C. Because he thought he had to keep his word.
D. Because Jack had always wanted it during his childhood.
4. Why did Jack say he needed some time to spend with his son?

B. He had promised to spare more time to stay with his son.
