Basketball is still a young game. It's over a hundred years old. In the winter of 1891, a certain college was having some trouble with its boy students. In the United States, it is not usual to telephone someone early in the morning. If you telephone early in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate(立即的) attention. So it is with the telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he may think that it’s a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.
In social life, time plays a very important part. In the USA guests are likely to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party reaches them only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. In other areas of the world, it may be thought silly to make an appointment(約會) too far ahead because plans which are made for a date more than a week away may be forgotten. The meaning of time is not the same in different cultures that treat time differently; being on time is valued highly in American life, for example. If people are not on time, they may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible(責(zé)任). In the USA no one would think of keeping a business friend for an hour; it would be too impolite. A person who is 5 minutes late is asked to make a shout apology (道歉). If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation(解釋), though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
1.A call at midnight would mean_________.
A.the matter is less important
B.the matter is too difficult to handle
C.the matter requires immediate attention
D.it is a matter of life and death
2.According to the passage, time plays a very important part in__________.

Andrew Engel was puzzled. He was sitting in class, but had no idea what the other students were talking about. He had done his homework, paid attention to lectures, and taken notes, but nothing was familiar. “Everyone is so much cleverer than I am,” he thought. It was a strange feeling, as he was always a good student in high school.
He felt even more puzzled a few days later. He got lost on his way to his favorite cinema. What’s worse, he began having trouble finding the right words when speaking. He asked, “What’s for dinner, Mom?” after he had just eaten. Poor Andrew, he was only 15!
His parents were worried and took Andrew to see a doctor. A brain scan(掃描) made it clear: Andrew had a malignant brain tumor(惡性腦腫瘤) . It was pressing on the part of the brain that makes new memory. He should be operated on as soon as possible. Andrew was scared!
Doctors removed the tumor, but Andrew’s memory was still poor. He was told he would probably never go back to school. Andrew was eager to enter a university, but it seemed that his dream wouldn’t come true.
“Even though they told me this, I knew I wanted to go back to school,” Andrew said. “I wanted to get my memory back.”
Andrew began by auditing(旁聽) an English class at a nearby school. In class, he took notes carefully and read his notes several times a day, then typed them again and again. The days are getting shorter and shorter, and temperatures are dropping. Winter is coming and it is easy for people to catch flu. Many people have started taking vitamin C pills as a precautionary(預(yù)防的)way. But a research has shown that vitamin C pills do not provide as much protection as they think. They are even not as good as other ways, like often washing your hands. Some German scientists have given people information and a test on the subject helping to stop incorrect ways.
Whether it is caused by cold or flu(流行性感冒), a runny nose and sore throat are signs of catching a cold. Many people overestimate(高估) the advantages of vitamin C and other pills. For years it was believed that taking vitamin C pills not only provided protection against colds but also against cancers, helping people to live longer. But the result of the research showed disagreement on these beliefs(看法). The result has now come out on the website wwww.informedhealthonline.org. “Some pills may not help people live longer. Some pills may even lead to earlier death,” says Professor Peter Sawicki. Scientists also say that the best way to get vitamins is through food instead of having vitamin pills. That is to say, we disagree with the way of taking vitamin C pills.
There are many simple but useful ways to lower the risk of catching a cold. These include often washing your hands with normal soap(肥皂) and water and not touching your face with your hands. People who have already had a cold can stop it from spreading by throwing away tissues(紙巾) at once after using them and not shaking hands with other people.

Basketball is still a young game. It's over a hundred years old. In the winter of 1891, a certain college was having some trouble with its boy students. The weather was bad and the students had to stay indoors. As they couldn't play outdoors, they were unhappy, and some even got into fights from time to time.
Some of the teachers, at the college asked Dr. Naismith to invent a game so that the students might have something to play with. It was not easy to invent such a game because it had to be played indoors , and the court (球場) was not very large.
Dr. Naismith thought for a few days and invented a kind of ball game. It was a fast, wonderful game with much moving and passing of the ball. It was played between two teams. To make a score , the ball had to be thrown into the basket ten feet(英尺) above the floor on the wall . At each end of the court there was such a basket. At first, Dr. Naismith wanted to throw the ball into a box. As he could not find boxes of the right size, he had to use fruit baskets instead. That is how the game got its name.
