When I was 14, I left school with learning disabilities and decided to surf the biggest waves in the world, first in California and then in Hawaii. One morning, I met an old man, a bum(流浪漢), on the street comer. He asked me if I was running away from home. I told him, “Not exactly, sir. ”
After talking a while, he told me that he had something to show me and share with me. We walked several blocks until we came upon the downtown Public Library.
The bum asked me to sit down and wait a moment. Later he returned with some books, and then said, “I want to teach you two things. Number one is never to judge a book by its cover, for a cover fools you. I’ll bet you think I’m a bum, don’t you?”
I said, “I guess so, sir.”
“Well, young man, I've got a little surprise for you. I am one of the wealthiest(富有的)men in the world. Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses (吻). So, I really doubt (懷疑) whether (是否) there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to make money to pay the schooling for me. They don’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV, and sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even impossible.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (被子). I asked her if there was love between them. She stopped her work and looked up with surprise. Then she bowed (彎下) her head and continued sewing the quilt. I was very worried because I thought I hurt her. But after a few minutes she said, “Look at this thread (線). Sometimes it appears, but most of the time it disappears in the quilt. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly (幾乎不) be seen anywhere or anytime, but it’s really there, and makes the quilt long-lasting.” I listened carefully but I couldn’t understand her until the next spring.
My mother suddenly got sick seriously and had to stay in the hospital for a one-month treatment. Every morning and dusk (黃昏) after she returned from the hospital, my father helped my mother walk slowly on the country road. There were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees, and the sun gently shone them through the leaves. All of these made up the most beautiful picture in the world. Reading their eyes, I knew they loved each other deeply. From this experience, I realized that love was just a thread in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

I am from Siberia and I am now living in the US.My old friend,Valentina, came to visit me last week, and I decided to take her to visit the“Big Apple”.I stayed with Jonathan, the son of an American friend of mine. When Valentina and I were leaving for the“Big Apple”on the first morning,Jonathan asked us where we were going.I told him that we were going to see the“Big Apple”.

He asked me if I knew how to get there. He seemed surprised when I said that I didn’t know how to get there.

Then he asked me if I had a map and I said that I ________.He seemed shocked.

Then he invited us back to the house. He said he could draw us a map. Then we went into the living room.He carefully drew us a map and gave us very clear directions.

We explained to him that in Siberia we do not prepare for our trips like the Americans.Americans always take maps and make preparations before going out.We just ask people along the way until we arrive at the place. That’s what we were planning to do in New York:just ask people until we get to the“Big Apple”.However, that is clearly not the American Way.

I don’t often lose things and I’m always careful with money, so I was quite surprised when I reached for my wallet and it wasn’t there. At first, I thought it was possible that I could have left it at home. Then I remembered taking it out to pay the taxi, so I knew I had it with me just before I walked into the restaurant. I wondered if it was possible that it could have dropped out of my pocket while I was eating dinner. I turned and walked back to the table where I had been sitting. Unluckily, there were several people sitting at the table at that time, so I had the waiter go over to the table to see if my wallet was on the floor. While the waiter was looking for it, the head of the restaurant came up to me and asked me if anything was wrong. I told him what had happened. He asked me to report the missing wallet to the police. I told him I didn’t want to do so; I was in a hurry because I had to reach my waiting room before two o’clock, where some people were waiting to see me.
