Most young people enjoy some forms of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some forms—football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.
Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.
Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kinds which would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.
If we compare mountaineering with other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.
The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.
A mountain climber continues to improve in skills year by year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skills and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

I do a lot of hiking. And I can step out of my house and within minutes reach a beautiful forest where I walk for exercise every day.I see many photography subjects such as parrots, snakes, hares, big trees and flowers. There are so many different flowers around my place that once I decided to see how many types I could count in a onehourlong walk, and I counted over 100.
Needless to say,as a keen amateur photographer,I always take a camera with me.I have three favorites: a Pentax Optio RZ10,a Sony Alpha 390 and a Panasonic Lumix FZ100.I mostly take the Pentax pocket camera with me.This Pentax pocket camera takes images as good as those from much more expensive Single Lens(鏡頭)Reflex cameras. It allows you to get to just 1 cm from the subject, and these images are of astonishing clarity(清楚).I can stick the camera right into a flower. And the photo shows fantastic details.
The Pentax is also good at taking landscapes. The color is natural and price again the details even of distant objects are great.Sometimes, even when I have one of my other cameras with me,I still just use the Pentax pocket camera.About half of all the images on my website were taken with the Pentax.
The Pentax takes quality images in poor light and the zoom works well. You have to work hard to get a blurry(模糊的)shot. This is an especially good feature at parties and gatherings. You get fantastic photos of people. You don't have to wait for them to keep still.
Keep this camera in your pocket or in the car.It takes up little room;it's light and you'll never regret it!

I am a writer.I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(喚起)an emotion,a visual image,a complex idea,or a simple truth.Language_is_the_tool_of_my_trade.And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.![]()
Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California,I've been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks.Like others,I have described it to people as “broken” English. But I feel embarrassed to say that.It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than“broken”,as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed,as if it lacked a certain wholeness.I've heard other terms used,“l(fā)imited English”, for example. But they seem just as bad,as if everything is limited, including people's perceptions(認(rèn)識(shí))of the limited English speaker.
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's “l(fā)imited” English limited my perception of her.I was ashamed of her English.I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me:the fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.
I started writing fiction in 1985.And for reasons I won't get into today,I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with:the English she used with me,which for lack of a better term might be described as“broken”:and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(內(nèi)在的)language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure.I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show:her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.

It was August 2nd,1927.The news had spread fast.A man named Ralph Peer was coming to the city of Bristol. He wanted to make recordings of local people singing and playing musical instruments. And he said he would pay fifty dollars for each song recorded. That was a lot of money in those days. Many people came to Bristol that day to play for Mr.Peer.But one group seemed to have just the sound that he was looking for. They were a man named A.P.Carter,his wife Sara, and her cousin Maybelle. They called themselves the Carter Family.
Their first recordings were sent to radio stations throughout the United States. Many listeners were surprised at what they heard.Instead of classical or jazz songs that radio stations usually played,a new sound was born. The Carter Family sounded different. They did not sound as if they had taken music lessons. But it did not matter. The people in poor rural areas thought they sounded just like their neighbors.
The Carters sang songs about living in the mountains of Virginia,Tennessee, and North Carolina. They sang about the love of a young man for a special girl. They sang about the beauty of nature. They sang about death and sadness. And they sang religious songs that told of the hope for a better life after death.
A.P.Carter sang in the group and also searched for new songs. He often traveled long distances to small towns in the southeastern United States. He wanted to hear the songs that local people sang in their communities. He wrote down the words but kept the music in his memory. When he returned home,he helped Sara and Maybelle fit them to the Carter Family musical style.
The Carter Family soon became famous. They recorded more songs. They traveled to many cities and towns in the eastern United States to perform.Thousands of people heard them sing and bought their recordings. Some people estimate that within three years, the Carter Family sold three hundred thousand recordings.

Many women write to me perplexed(困惑的) about why they can't form close friendships. They try new approaches, put themselves in all the right places, see therapists, and read relevant selfhelp books. They consider themselves interesting, loyal, kind, and friendworthy people. But for reasons unknown to them, they have a tough time forming intimate relationships. Many admit to not having even one close friend.
A recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology offers some clues as to how both nature(personality) and nurture (experience) impact our friendships.Researchers at the University of Virginia and University of Toronto,Mississauga studied more than 7,000 American adults between the ages of 20 and 75 over a period of ten years, looking at the number of times these adults moved during childhood.Their study, like prior ones, showed a link between residential mobility and adult wellbeing:The more times participants moved as children, the poorer the quality of their adult social relationships.
But digging deeper, the researchers found that personality—specifically being introverted (內(nèi)向的) or extroverted (外向的)—could either intensify or buffer (緩沖) the effect of moving to a new town or neighborhood during childhood. The negative impact of more moves during childhood was far greater for introverts compared to extroverts.
“Moving a lot makes it difficult for people to maintain longterm close relationships,” stated Dr.Shigehiro Oishi, the first author of the study,in a press release from the American Psychological Association,“This might not be a serious problem for outgoing people who can make friends quickly and easily.Less outgoing people have a harder time making new friends.”
Families often have to relocate—across town, across the country,or across the globe.Yet,in many cases, their kids and young adolescents haven't yet built up a bank of friendships. So the conventional wisdom is to try to minimize moves for the sake of your child, whenever possible, and to move at the end of the academic year.

B.The more people moved during childhood, the more friends they have.
C.The more people moved during childhood, the better they adjust to society.

A.should not relocate their homes
B.should relocate their homes within the town
C.had better move at the end of the school year

There are people in Italy who can’t stand soccer. Not all Canadians love hockey. A similar situation exists in America, where there are those individuals you may be one of them who frown when somebody mentions baseball. Baseball to them means boring hours watching grown men in funny tight outfits standing around in a field staring away while very little of anything happens. They tell you it’s a game better suited to the 19th century, slow, quiet, and gentlemanly. These are the same people you may be one of them who love football because there’s the sport that values “the hit”.
By contrast, baseball seems abstract, cool, silent, still.
On TV the game is divided into a dozen perspectives, replays, close-ups. The geometry(幾何學(xué)) of the game, however, is essential to understanding it. You will view the game from one point as a painter does his subject; you may, of course, project yourself into the game. It is in this projection that the game affords so much space and time for involvement. The TV won’t do it for you.
Take, for example, the third baseman. You sit behind the third base and you watch him watching home plate. His legs are apart, knees flexed(彎曲). His arms hang loose. He does a lot of this. The skeptic(懷疑論者) still cannot think of any other sports so still, so passive. But watch what happens every time the pitcher throws: the third baseman goes up on his toes, flexes his arms or brings the glove to a point in front of him, takes a step right or left, backward or forward, perhaps he glances across the field to check his first baseman’s position. Suppose the pitch is a ball. “Nothing happened,” you say. “I could have had my eyes closed.”
The skeptic and the innocent must play the game. And this involvement in the stands is no more intellectual than listening to music is. Watch the third baseman. Smooth the dirt in front of you with one foot; smooth the pocket in your glove; watch the eyes of the batter, the speed of the bat, the sound of ball on wood. If football is a symphony of movement and theatre, baseball is chamber music, a spacious interlocking(連鎖) of notes, chorus(和聲)and responses.
【小題1】The passage is mainly concerned with .
A.the attraction of baseball
B.the superiority of football
C.the different tastes of people for sports
D.the different characteristics of sports
A.it is only to the taste of the old
B.it is not exciting enough
C.it involves fewer players than football
D.it is pretentious and looks funny
A.baseball may seem boring when watched on TV
B.football is more attracting than baseball
C.baseball is more interesting than football
D.baseball is too peaceful for the young
A.The consequence was so bad that he could not bear to see it
B.The third baseman is so good at baseball that he could finish the game with eyes closed all the time and do his work well
C.Even if the third baseman closed his eyes a moment ago, it could make no difference to the result
D.The third baseman would rather sleep than play the game

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labour through your work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自語)as “Get up , John ! You’ll be late for work again !” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can make your life fit it better. Habit can help. Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to . If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle , but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point .
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours .

Dear Dean,
It is my understanding that this college has received a large donation to be used to improve the quality of life for students: expand the bookstore or add computers to the lab. I strongly argue in favor of the addition of more computers.
We have to think about a greater goal and a more practical way to enhance the quality of life for students. Do we want our college to be known as a place with a great bookstore where you can find CDs and gifts, or as a place where the students can research in their field using the best tools provided by technology?
As a learning institution, this college has the responsibility to offer its students the best technology to help them prepare for their future, since many students will be expected to be familiar with the latest software and other tools when they go on to work.
While they are in college, students find they are expected to use computers. They are asked to create PowerPoint presentations and research many topics on the Internet. Being able to do projects using the computer also gives students the opportunity to find information that without a computer would be much more difficult to find. Since students are competing for good grades, those who have limited access to computers are at a great disadvantage.
If there are more new and faster computers accessible, students will be able to complete their work more efficiently. No more will they have to wait in line, paper and disk in hand, while scanning the room for an empty chair and computer. No longer will they have to sit and wait while an outdated computer struggles to follow their commands.
The more computers are used in society, the more colleges will depend on them as a tool of teaching and learning. Making computers more accessible to students facilitates their learning process by making it much easier and more engaging(專注), and eventually improves their quality of life.
【小題1】The purpose of the author in writing the passage is________.
A.to explain why students are in great need of computers
B.to tell us what benefits students can gain from computers
C.to persuade the Dean to purchase more advanced computers
D.to describe the problems caused by lack of computers
A.computers are beneficial to students’ academic success
B.computers are the only access to good grades for students
C.students find it convenient to do homework by computers
D.students wish to use more money to buy more computers
| A.furthers | B.equips | C.predicts | D.troubles |
| A | B |
| C | D |
