　　Hello, listeners．Welcome to Henton Hospital Radio．Before our music programme at four, I'm going to repeat some of our hospital rules．

　　The hospital can sleep 800 patients．There's 8 beds in each ward(病房)．The visiting hours are in the afternoon from 2∶30 to 3∶30 and in the evening from 7∶00 to 8∶00．But remember only two people can see you at the same time．Sorry about that, but you can see what would happen if we didn't have these rules．

　　The other rules are about our hours．We start quite early－you might not be used to that．We wake you up at 6 o'clock, and breakfast is at 8 o'clock, lunch is at noon．

　　There's tea at 3∶30 and supper is at 6 o'clock．

　　You can see the non-smoking sign－we don't allow smoking in the wards．I'm sure you understand why．However, if you do need to smoke, there are some smoking-rooms where it is allowed．

　　You will find the radio switch(開)on the wall near your bed, with four own headphones, if you want to listen．It's our own hospital radio wishing you a quick recovery(康復)．

　　The water level of oceans rises and falls alternately(交替地)twice a day．This movement of water is called the tide．Tides are caused by the pull of the sun and the moon on the earth's surface; since the moon is much closer, it affects the tides more than the sun．When the moon is directly overhead, it actually pulls on the water that is below it．This causes the water level to rise because the water is pulled away from the earth．As the moon disappears over the horizon, the pull lessens(減少)and the water level settles back towards the ocean bottom．

　　When the water reaches its highest level, we have high tide．And when the water reaches its lowest level, we have low tide．From its lowest point, the water rises gradually for about six hours until it reaches high tide．Then it begins to fall continuously for about six hours until it reaches low tide．Then the cycle begins again．

　　If you wish to become a better reader, here are four important points to remember about rate, or speed of reading．

　　1．Knowing why you are reading－what you are reading to find out－will often help you to know whether to read rapidly or slowly．

　　2．Some things should be read slowly throughout．Examples are directions for making or doing something, areithmetic problems, science and history books, which are full of important information．You must read such things slowly to remember each important step and understand each important idea,

　　3．Some things should be read rapidly throughout．Examples are simple stories meant for enjoyment, news letters from friends, items, ot bits of news from the local paper, telling what is happening to friends and neighbours．

　　4．In some of your readings, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast, as you go along．You need to read certain pages rapidly and then slow down and do some more careful readings when you come to important ideas which must be remembered．

　　With a concept inspired by the famed Silk Road, our Torch Relay will break new ground, traveling from Olympia through some of the oldest civilizations known to man－Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Byzantine, Mesopotamian, Persian, Arabian, Indian and Chinese．Carrying the message "Share the Peace, Share the Olympics," the eternal flame will reach new heights as it crosses the Himalayas over the world's highest summit-Mount Qomolangma, which is known to many of you as Mt．Everest．In China, the torch will pass through Tibet, cross the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, travel the Great Wall and visit Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and the 56 ethnic communities who make up our society．On its journey, the flame will be seen by and inspire more human beings than any previous relay．

　　I am afraid I can not give the whole picture of our cultural programs within such a short period of time．Before I end, let me share with you one story．Seven hundred years ago, amazed by his incredible descriptions of a faraway land of great beauty, people asked Marco Polo whether his stories about China were true．And Marco answered：What I have told you was not even half of what I saw．Actually, what we have shown you here today is only a fraction of Beijing that awaits you．

　　Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that Beijing will prove to be a land of wonders to all of you to athletes, spectators(觀眾)and the worldwide television audience alike．Come and join us．

　　Lions are opportunists．They prefer to eat without having to do too much work．When resting in the shade, they are also watching the sky to see what is flying by, and even in the heat of the day they will suddenly start up and run a mile across the plains to find out what is going on．If another animal has made a kill, they will drive it off and take the kill for themselves．A grown lion can easily eat 60 pounds of meat at a single feeding．Often they eat until it seems painful for them to lie down．

　　The lionesses, being thinner and faster, are better hunters than the males．But the males don’t mind．After the kill they move in and take the rest share．

Most kills are made at night or just before daybreak．We have seen many, many daylight attempts but only ten kills．Roughly, it’s about twenty daytime attempts for one kill．

　　When lions are hiding for an attack by a water hole, they wait patiently and can charge at any second．The kill is the exciting moment in the day-to-day life of the lion, since these great animals spend most of their time, about 20 hours a day, sleeping and resting．

　　Lions are social cats, and when they are having a rest, they love to touch each other．After drinking at a water hole, a lioness rests her head on another’s back．When walking, young lions often touch faces with older ones, an act of close ties among members of the group．

　　That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco．There I was walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater．With opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines．I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time．As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco．City life had become too much for me．

　　As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold．I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers．Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets．

　　About a block from my apartment, I heard a sound behind me．I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun．The street was empty．All I saw was a shining streetlight．Still, the noise had made me nervous, so I started to run faster．Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been．It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk．

　　Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore．I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise．Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found．

　　Just as I was about to give up the search, I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me．When a voice called from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming．How could this man know my name?The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes．“Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape．

　　It was nearly 3 a.m.by the time I got into bed．I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back．I also had got back some enjoyment of city life．I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other．

　　The human body is a living machine, and, like all machines, it needs “fuel” to supply it with energy．This is provided by the food we eat．But how much do we need to stay healthy?

　　The energy value of food is usually measured in calories．A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1kg of water by 1℃．The number of calories people need per day is different．Also, the number of calories you use at any one moment normally depends on the activity you are in．For example, you need more calories for standing than for sitting, more for running than for walking, and so on．

　　The energy in food is in the form of three kinds of chemical materials-carbohydrate, protein and fat．Carbohydrate provides 3.8 Cal/gm, protein 4.0 Cal/gm, and fat 8.8 Cal/gm．Each food contains different amount of these materials, as the round pictures show．
