　　Thirty student volunteers from the university’s school of international studies sat at the beds of the patients in their specially–decorated“care huts”．They talked with them and gave massages(按摩)to patients kept in their beds．

　　“I felt sorry that I could not offer more to these people than talking with them and trying to cheer them up．”said Deng Yetao, 20, a third-year student．“But it occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies．They are afraid of the coming death．Their loneliness is worse than physical pains．”

　　Daily visits and services by social workers and youth volunteers are a very important part of their programmers．A total of 330, 000 Beijing students from 119 universities and colleges have visited the hospital．Many continue to offer services in their spare time．Some of them volunteer to hold the hands of dying patients during the last minutes of their lives．

　　WHEN an NBA player is young he thinks he can win the championship by himself．It is only later when he has aged and been through many battles that he learns an important lesson：there is no“I”in“team”．

　　There is no better example of the value of teamwork than the Boston Celtics．Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were all superstars on three different teams．Yet, none of them had any titles to show for it．Then, last season, they decided to sacrifice money and individual statistics to play together．Garnett and Allen joined Pierce on the Celtics and changed the NBA in the process．

　　It started in simple ways．Garnett and Allen are two of the most intense athletes in the world．They treat every second of every practice like it is the NBA championship．If you want to play alongside them then you will have to do the same．So, the young guys on the Celtics started giving their full effort too．

　　Pierce had been the star of the Celtics for many years．He used to shoot the ball many times a game．But with the addition of Allen and Garnett he shot less and focused on defense．His selflessness showed the young players that doing what made the team better was the only thing that mattered．

　　When the Celtics were winning and the game was almost over, Garnett, Pierce and Allen would come out of the game．But they wouldn’t just sit on the bench．Instead, they stood and cheered and screamed for their teammates．They wanted to support their friends and teammates．

　　Now, the guys who don't play know they can still affect the game by cheering so they scream and cheer when Garnett, Allen and Pierce are playing．The Celtics have developed a strong relationship．They are more than just teammates．They are brothers．

　　The result：the Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA championship and are considered the favorites to win the Eastern Conference championship again this year．

　　There is a saying that goes,“A successful team beats with one heart．”If that is the case, the Celtics may have the biggest heart in the NBA．

　　Failure is probably the most fatiguing(令人疲勞的)experience a person ever has．There is nothing more tiringthan not succeeding, being blocked, not moving ahead．It is an evil circle．Failure causes fatigue, and fatigue makes it harder to get to work, which adds to the fatigue．

　　We experience this tiredness in two main ways：start-up fatigue and performance fatigue．In the former case, we keep putting off a task that we are forced to take up．Either because it is too boring or because it is too difficult, we avoid it．And the longer we put it off, the more tired we feel．

　　Such start-up fatigue is very real, even not actually physical, not something in our muscles and bones．The remedy(治療法)is obvious, though perhaps not easy to apply：willpower exercise．The moment I find myself turning away from a job, or putting it under a pile of things I have to do, I clear my desk of everything else and attack the difficult item first．To prevent start-up fatigue, always treat the most difficult job first．

　　Performance fatigue is more difficult to handle．Here we are willing to get started, but we can't seem to do the job right．Its difficulties appear to be insurmountable and however hard we work, we fail again and again．The mounting experience of failure carries with it an ever-increasing burden of mental fatigue．In such a situation, I work as hard as I can, then let the unconsciousness take over．

　　For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets．Most of these searches have been done over the radio．The hope is that someone in outer space may be trying to get in touch with us．Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships travelling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such message．

　　Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes to listen to signals from about 1,000 stars, all within 100 light years of Earth．In addition, they will scan the entire sky to“l(fā)isten”for radio messages from more distant stars．Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time．Scientists are looking for any signal that stands out from the background noise．

　　Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, scientists find that five percent are like our sun．Perhaps half of them have a planet like Earth．Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution(進(jìn)化)of life．Based on the inhabitable(that can be lived in)planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life．

　　However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets．Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there．They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely．

　　Other scientists believe that our search hasn’t been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy．Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old．In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilization much more advanced than ours have developed．Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us．If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking．

　　When Joe Bates was twelve years old, he lost interest in school．He stopped listening in his classes．Some of his teachers began to consider him a problem．

　　But a few of Joe’s teachers thought that Joe might have lost interest in schoolwork because he already understood it．They proposed that Joe try taking a university class in computer science．Joe did．He was the best student in the class．Later tests showed that his intelligence and knowledge were far greater than most children of his age．He entered university when he was thirteen, about four years earlier than most children．And by the time he was in his early twenties, Joe was teaching computer science at a university．

　　Joe’s story shows what can happen when a child’s unusual ability is recognized．Sadly, however, not all gifted children get this recognition．And educational experts say unusually gifted children may waste their abilities if they do not get help to develop them．

　　Studies show that almost twenty percent of students who fail to complete high school in the United States are gifted children．

　　This is because gifted children can have special problems as well as special abilities．Teachers may not recognize their abilities or may not know how to keep them interested．Or they may consider such students to be troublemakers or rebels．

　　Gifted children may feel lonely or different because they do not know other children who share their interests．

　　Educators say there are more than two million gifted children in the United States today．But they say fewer than half are taking part in special education programs designed for them．

　　One of the most successful programs is held every summer at John Hopkins University in the state of Maryland, where Joe Bates went to school．It started in 1980 when educators saw that there must be many children like Joe．

　　At first, only 100 children took part in it, and now more than 1,000 children between the ages of nine and sixteen are students in the summer program．

　　The John Hopkins program provides studies in math and science．It also has classes for children with unusual ability in language and writing．The children study the same subject every day for several weeks．It could be biology, or history, or English literature．In those few weeks, they learn as much as in a normal nine-month school year．

　　William Durden, the director says the program succeeds because it permits children to make progress more quickly than in a traditional program．And the children get to meet others like themselves．
