　　Body language is a very powerful tool of communication, not only between people but in the animal world as well．

　　In many instances, we produce idioms(習慣用語、成語)which are all understandable by borrowing examples from animal communication．For example, we know that a frightened cat will arch(拱起)its back high in rigid curve(拱形)．From this starting-point we might hear the expression, “He gets my back up!”meaning “He makes me angry．”

　　In the same manner, we know that many animals, if challenged by attackers, will not turn and run away, because this will encourage the attacker to attack them more forcefully．Instead, they will move backwards slowly to get out of harm’s way, always still facing their attacker．We call this action “backing off” and it can be used just as well with humans as with animals．

　　In the case of humans, however, the back-off may not be physical but oral, as in using a kinder tone of voice and gentler words instead of fighting against the attackers．

　　Before the waves reach South America, the second piece of the comet lands in Argentina．Earthquakes and volcanoes are set off in the Andes Mountains．The shock waves move north into California and all around the Pacific Ocean．The cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco and Tokyo are completely destroyed by earthquakes．Millions of people in the southern half of the Earth are already dead, but the north won’t escape for long．Because of the explosions, the sun is hidden by clouds of dust, temperatures around the world fall to almost zero．Crops are ruined．The sun won’t be seen again for many years．Wars break out as countries fight for food．A year later, no more than 10 million people remain alive．

　　Could it really happen?In fact, it has already happened more than once in the history of the earth．

　　The dinosaurs were on the earth for over 160 million years．Then 65 million years ago they suddenly disappeared．Many scientists believe that the Earth was hit by a piece of object in space．The dinosaurs couldn’t live through the cold climate that followed and they died out．Will we meet the same end?

　　Because the idea of risk also carries with it the possibility of failure, many of us usually wait for others to take charge．But if you want to be a leader, you must learn to fail－and not die a thousand deaths．Pick yourself up and start all over again．

　　Yet in Sydney next month, they will meet again by the pool, and for a short time the friends will race against each other in the 50-meter butterfly(蝶泳)in the Australian championships at Homebush Bay．

　　Gould, now a 47-year-old mother of four, has announced she will be making a return to elite competition(頂級賽事)to swim the one event, having set a qualifying(合格的)time of 30.32 seconds in winning gold at last year’s United States Masters championships．Her comeback comes 32 years after she won three golds at the Munich Olympics．

　　Schipper, now a 17-year-old from Brisbane with a bright future of going to Athens for her first Olympics, yesterday recalled(回憶)her time with Gould five years ago．

　　“I was at a national youth camp on the Gold Coast and Shane had come along to talk to us and watch us train,” Schipper explained．“It seemed as if we had long been good friends．I don’t know why．We just started talking and it went from there．”

　　“She had a lot to share with all of us at that camp．She told us stories about what it was like at big meets like the Olympics and what it’s like to be on an Australian team．It was really interesting．”

　　Next time, things will be more serious．“I will still be swimming in the 50m butterfly at the nationals, so there is a chance that I could actually be competing against Shane Gould,” said Schipper, who burst into the scene at last year’s national championships with second places in the 100m and 200m butterfly．

　　The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power．“On the face of the building we have solar panels which change the sun’s energy into electricity,” Dettling explained．

　　The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room．In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day．The Solaire cuts water by reusing it．

　　Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however．Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy sources．Anyhow, Holowka said, “It’s going to be big．”

China's economic growth 'hard to predict'

　　The worsening global economic situation makes it difficult for China to predict its growth for next year, a senior official said on Friday．

　　“How fast China’s economy will grow next year is uncertain,” Liu He, deputy director of the Office of the Central Leading Group on Finance and Economy Work, told China Daily．

　　“To a large extent, the rate will be decided by the external(外部的)situation,” Liu said during a discussion with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt and other economists in Beijing．

　　This year, GDP is estimated to grow at 9.4 or 9.5 percent, down from 10.6 percent last year, he said However, the impact of the current financial turbulence “on our economy is much less than on the rest of the world”, he said．

　　Nicholas Stern, a former UK government advisor, also told China Daily it will take at least one or two years for the world to recover from the recession, which is now spreading from the US and the UK to the rest of the world．

　　“We don’t know how long the recession will last, but it is unlikely to be short,” he said．

　　Liu said China can use the downturn(衰退)as an opportunity to restructure its economy, which has relied heavily on government investment, foreign trade and low-cost technology over the past years．

　　“When the economy is experiencing fast growth, companies are unwilling to upgrade their technologies,” Liu said．

　　“The slowdown gives such firms the opportunity to enhance(提高)their competitive edge through better technologies．”

　　When I was a child, our dining room had two kinds of chairs－two large ones with arm rests and four small ones without．The larger ones stood at the ends of the table, the smaller ones on the sides．Mom and Dad sat in the big chairs, except when one of us was away; then Mom would sit in one of the smaller chairs．Dad always sat at the end, at the “head” of the table．Sitting where he did, Dad was framed by the window through which the yard could be seen with its trees and grass．His chair was not just a place for him at the table; it was a place in which he was situated against the yard and trees．It was the holy(神圣的)and protected place that was his, and ours through him．

　　After Dad retired, he and Mom moved out into a small flat．When they came to visit me at their old house．Dad still sat at the end of the table though the table was no longer his but mine．Only with my marriage to Barbara, did I hear a voice questioning the arrangement．She requested, gently but firmly, that I sit at the head of the table in our home．I realized then that I was head of the family, but I also felt unwilling to introduce such a change．How would I feel sitting in that “head” place in my Dad’s presence?And how would he handle it?I was to find out on the occasion of our youngest child’s first birthday．

　　Mom and Dad arrived for lunch, and went into the dining room．Dad moved toward his usual seat in front of the window．Before he could get around the side of the table, I took a deep breath and said, “Dad, this is going to be your place, next to Mom, on the side．” He stopped, looked at me and then sat down．I felt sad, and angry at Barbara for pushing me to do this．It would have been easy to say, “My mistake, Dad Sit where you always sit．” But I didn’t．

　　When he and Mom were seated, Barbara and I took our places．I don’t know how Dad felt．I do know that, though removed from his usual place, he continued to share his best self with us, telling stories of his childhood and youth to the delight of his grandchildren．As I served the food, our lives experienced a change, which we continue to live with．

　　It wasn’t easy, but I sense that there is also something good in the change which has occurred I am beginning to learn that “honoring one’s father” is more than the question of which place to occupy at the dining table．It also means listening, wherever we sit and whatever positions we own, to the stories Dad longs to tell．We may then, during these magical moments, even be able to forget about whose chair is whose．
