　　Bangkok is not what it used to be．Along Sukhumwit Road the old four-storeyed shops are now largely replaced by shiny glass skyscrapers．The python(a kind of snake)that used to live there is gone．But if you get away from the traffic and wind your way toward the old Chinese area of Yannawa near the port, things haven’t changed much．There are still palm trees, high stone walls and little streets－and maybe even a python or two．And interesting people．

　　Even today, the sight of an Australian boy in a purple wizard costume(a dress)with his arm halfway down a drain(下水道)is enough to make the people of Yannawa stare．Thais love a good show, and even very ordinary foreign children can attract their attention if they dare show their faces on the street．But when a large ten-year-old like Evan appears to be fishing for rats with his arm in the drain, and wears what looks like a purple silk dress with gold stars all over it and a tall conical(圓錐體)hat in the same design on top of his head, the whole street stops．Over the years the street had noticed that foreigners were not like normal people．Already today the street had been delighted by the sight of a foreign man with a bright blue nose and black lipstick(口紅)and wearing a dirty wedding dress．The street had great hope for Evan．

　　But Evan, face down the drain, was deep in his own thoughts and did not notice．It was the end of October and he was returning from his school Halloween party．

　　It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang．I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step．

　　I was busy．I wanted to say“no”until I looked down at their feet．They were wearing thin little sandals(涼鞋), wet with heavy snow．

　　They walked over and sat down at the table．Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor．I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside．Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget．

　　The silence in the front room struck me．I looked in．The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it．The boy asked in a flat voice,“Lady, are you rich?”

　　“Am I rich?Mercy, no!”

　　I looked at my shabby slipcovers(家具套)．The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said,“Your cups match your saucers．”Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply．They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind．They hadn’t said“Thank you”．They didn’t need to．They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful．

　　Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence．But they matched．

　　I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup．Potatoes and brown meat soup, a roof over our heads, my man with a good steady job－these matched, too．

　　I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room．The muddy prints of the small sandals were still wet upon my floor．Let them be for a while, I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am．

　　On average, American kids aged 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight hours more than they did in 1981．They also did more household work and participated in more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet(芭蕾舞)．Involvement in sports, in particular, rose almost 50％from 1981 to 1997：boys now spend an average of four hours a week playing sports; girls log hall that time．All in all, however, children's leisure time dropped from 40％of the day in 1981 to 25％．

　　“Children are affected by the same time crunch(危機(jī))that affects their parents,”says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children's timetable．A chief reason, she says, is that more mothers are working outside the home．(Nevertheless, children in both double-income and“male breadwinner”households spent comparable amounts of time interacting with their parents：19 hours and 22 hours respectively．In contrast, children spent only 9 hours with their single mothers．)

　　All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids．“Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,”says T．Berry Brazelton, professor at Harvard Medical School．Unstructured play encourages independent thinking and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids aged 3 to 12 spent only 12 hours a week engaging in it．

　　The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing“free time”watching television．But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news．If they're spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren't replacing it with reading．Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children spent just over an hour a week reading．Let's face it, who's got the time?

　　Training is also an easy way to establish the social rank order．When your dog obeys a simple request of“come here, sit,”it is showing obedience and respect for you．It is not necessary to establish yourself as top dog or leader of the dog pack(群)by using extreme measures．You can teach your dog its subordinate(從屬的)role by teaching it to show submission to you．Most dogs love performing tricks for you to pleasantly accept that you are in charge．

　　Training should be fun and rewarding for you and your dog．It can enrich your relationship and make living together more enjoyable．A well-trained dog is more confident and can more safely be allowed a greater amount of freedom than an untrained animal．

　　Forgiving someone who has hurt you or let you down is never an easy thing．Several new studies, however, say that it could have a lot of health benefits．When you think of forgiveness, you probably don’t think of it as being a health or medical problem．Studies from Stanford University, on the other hand, show that something like anger can change your well-being．

　　When cartoon book characters like the Incredible Hulk get angry, they change colours and often gain special power．In the real world, anger is less obvious and may be more dangerous．That’s why Professor Fred Luskin, founder of the Stanford Forgiveness Project and author of Forgive for Good, says holding on to anger and hatred can harm your physical and mental health．Two new studies seem to show the same idea．

　　The studies find that people who are able to forgive feel less stress, less back pain, and less depression．They also have fewer headaches, lower blood pressure, and fewer problems on sleeping．

　　So it doesn’t matter if your anger is caused by the traffic or other things．Learning to let it go is important．Techniques such as deep breath or thought can help．Or just ask yourself if it’s worth hurting yourself by staying angry with someone else．

　　Forgiveness does not mean that you simply accept what happened and say it’s OK．Instead, it’s a way of making peace with yourself about what happened in the past．

　　Bermuda prepared itself for a potential hurricane last night as tropical storm Florence picked up strength and headed towards the North Atlantic island．

　　By yesterday evening, Florence was around 500 miles south of Bermuda and moving north-west at about 13 mph．

　　With gusts reaching up to 70 mph, forecasters warned that Florence could become a hurricane as it nears Bermuda, and the island's government urged its 65,000 residents to take precautions．

　　“The public is encouraged to stock up on normal hurricane supplies and to secure their homes, lawn furniture and any other loose items which could be affected by high winds,”said Derrick Burgess, the island's minister of public safety．

　　Yesterday, islanders hurried to install storm shutters on their houses and pull yachts(游艇)on to beaches．The island's only airport was boarded up and is not expected to re-open until Tuesday．

　　One local, mechanic Paul Henderson, 53, recalled 1987's devastating Hurricane Emily as he stocked up on batteries．

　　“I was still cleaning up my property three years after,”he said．

　　The storm was expected to turn away from the coast of the United States as it turned north toward Bermuda, but forecasters said its large size could also create high surf and rapid currents along eastern parts of the coast．

　　The six-month hurricane season that began on 1 June has produced only one hurricane so far．Tropical storm Ernesto briefly reached hurricane strength near Haiti last month but weakened before drenching(濕透)America's east coast．

　　Last year's storm season saw a record 28 named storms and 15 hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed New Orleans and a line of the US's south-west coast．

　　There are six groups of dives．Forward, backward, reverse(向后的)and inward dives involve rotation in different directions relative to the board and the starting position．Twisting(轉(zhuǎn)體)includes any dive with a twist．Armstand dives begin with a handstand position on the edge of the platform．

　　Pairs of divers perform a combination of dives at the same time．Nine judges award points with four judges rating the execution of the dives and other five judging the synchronization of the two dives．

　　The plenary meeting, attended by 195 CPC Central committee members and 152 alternate members, is the first of its kind, where the Party has focused on social development matters, rather than political and economic affairs．

　　The communiqué admitted that While China is a harmonious society indeed in general, there are some problems that harmed its social harmony．

　　Also according to the communiqué, the party will try its best to improve its legal system and human rights protection．Economically, it will make its efforts to narrow the income gap and increase employment．Improving government service, promoting people’s moral standards and securing public order are also high on the list．Protecting the environment is also a goal, to be achieved along with the others, over the next 15 years．

　　To achieve these aims, the meeting stressed that more efforts should be made to balance economic and social development, promote social equity and justice, form a set of common aspirations, ideal and moral codes for the whole society, strength social affairs management and services, and create harmonious social relations for the unity of all Chinese people．

　　While calling for efforts to promote economic growth, the Party also stressed the importance of making a new set of values for the market-based society in the making．
