In America, drivers’ education is part of the regular high school curriculum. Every student in his or her second year of high school is required to take a class in driver’s education. However, unlike other courses, it is not given during the regular school year. Instead it is a summer course.?

The course is divided up into two parts: class time for learning laws and regulations and driving time to practise driving. Class time is not unlike any other class. The students have a text from which they study the basic laws they must know to pass the written driving test that is given to anyone wanting to get a driver’s license.?

Driving time is a chance for the students to get behind the wheel (steering wheel) and practice starting steering, backing up, parking, switching lanes, turning corners, and all the other maneuvers (操作) required to drive a car. Each student is required to drive a total of six hours. The students are divided up into groups of four. The students and the instructor go out driving for two hour blocks of time. Thus, each student gets half an hour driving time per outing. The instructor and “driver” sit in the front seats and the other three students sit in the back.?

Drivers Ed cars are unlike other cars in which they have two sets of brakes, one on the driver’s side and one on the other side where the instructor sits. Thus, if the student driver should run into difficulties the instructor can take over. The car also has another special feature. On the top of the car is a sign that reads: STUDENT DRIVER. That lets nearby drivers know that they should use extra caution(小心) the student driver is a beginning driver, not very experienced and prone to driving slowly.?

After the student has passed the driver’s education course and reached the appropriate age to drive (this age differs in every state but in most cases the person must be 16 years old), they can go to a designated state office to take their driver’s test, which is made up of an eye examination, a written test, and a road test. The person must pass all three tests in order to be given a driver’s license. If the person did well in his or her driver’s education class, he or she will pass the test with flying colors and get a driver’s license.?

1. In America, the driver’s course mentioned above___________.

A. is considered as part of the advanced education?

B. is given to anyone wanting to get a driver’s license?

C. is carried on at the same time as other courses?

3. We can infer that the students are required to ______ in their whole driving practice.

A. go out driving for twelve times                     B. spend at least six hours driving?

C. drive for two hour blocks of time           D. get half an hour driving

4. Which of the following does not agree with the requirements for the students wanting to get their driver’s license? ?

A. They must be 16 years of age

B. They should go to have their driver’s test

C. They must have their eyes examined

D. They ought to do well in their driver’s course

5 In the last sentence, “with flying colors” means______________.?

In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism(個(gè)人主義)— the differences among people, Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values.Students do not memorize information.Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.

In most Asian societies, on the contrary, people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient (東方) reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism.Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules or information that they have memorized.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self-control.There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information they have memorized.

The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’ t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.

1、The reason why American teachers attach much importance to individualism is that ______________.

A.they are required to do so

B.their students do not memorize information

C.the United States is a country of many cultures

D.their students work individually

2、Which of the following statements applies to Asian methods of education?

A.Each child in a classroom draws a different picture

B.Students have to find information themselves.

C.Students are prepared for a society that values discipline

D.Teachers serve as a guide in discussion

3、A good educational system would be the one that  ______________.

A.has more advantages

B.is the combination of Western and Oriental methods

C.is based on the Western system

D.rests on the Asian system

4、The author believes that ______________.

A.different educational systems reflect different culture of the societies

B.students from Western countries are creative but selfish

C.Asian students are merely interested in math and science

D.there are more advantages to Western system of education than to Oriental one

5.The author focuses on ______________.

A.the differences in methods of education orient and west

B.the advantages and disadvantages to both of the Western and Asian educational system

C.how Asian school systems reflect group goals

D.how Western school systems reflect the value of individualism

The use of advertisement is certainly great both to the producer and the consumer. There is a great deal of truth in the saying that good quality and honest workmanship are best advertisement. Of course, people know that the manufacturers would have done better if they have used the money for advertising in making better products to sell. But in these days of far-extended trade, there is no doubt that advertisement is necessary to make the existence of even first-class goods known. And even goods that are already well known must still be advertised. Some manufacturers are aware of the value of it, for, when they try to save money by stopping their advertisements, their sales go down at once.

But advertising has its abuses. Many advertisements are meant to cheat, and do at times cheat the public by raising the price of worthless goods. There is only one comfort in this aspect that a lying advertisement cannot sell worthless goods for long, for the people who buy it will not buy it a second time. As an old saying goes, “You can take in all people part of time; and you can take in some people all the time; but you cannot take in all the people all the time.

科目: 來(lái)源:廣東省2010屆高三下學(xué)期第二次階段性考試試題(英語(yǔ)) 題型:閱讀理解

Like many of my generation, I have a weakness for hero worship. At some point, however, we all begin to question our heroes and our need for them. This leads us to ask: What is a hero?

Despite immense differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics that instruct and inspire people.

A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a story of adventure to tell and a community who will listen. But a hero goes beyond mere fame.

Heroes serve powers or principles larger than themselves. Like high-voltage(電壓) transformers, heroes take the energy of higher powers and step it down so that it can be used by ordinary people.

The hero lives a life worthy of imitation. Those who imitate a genuine hero experience life with new depth, enthusiasm, and meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom do they serve? What are they willing to live and die for? If the answer or evidence suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes. Madonna and Michael Jackson are famous, but who would claim that their fans find life more abundant?

Heroes are catalysts (催化劑) for change. They have a vision from the mountaintop. They have the skill and the charm to move the masses. They create new possibilities. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of the British Empire. Without Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., we might still have segregated(隔離的) buses, restaurants, and parks. It may be possible for large-scale change to occur without leaders with magnetic personalities, but the pace of change would be slow, the vision uncertain, and the committee meetings endless.

1. Although heroes may come from different cultures, they _______.

  A. generally possess certain inspiring characteristics

  B. probably share some weaknesses of ordinary people

  C. are often influenced by previous generations

  D. all unknowingly attract a large number of fans

2. According to the passage, heroes are compared to high-voltage transformers in that ____.

  A. they have a vision from the mountaintop

  B. they have warm feelings and emotions

  C. they can serve as concrete(具體的) examples of noble principles

  D. they can make people feel stronger and more confident

3. Madonna and Michael Jackson are not considered heroes because ________.

  A. they are popular only among certain groups of people

  B. their performances do not improve their fans morally

  C. their primary concern is their own financial interests

  D. they are not clear about the principles they should follow

4. Gandhi and Martin Luther King are typical examples of outstanding leaders who ___.

  A. are good at demonstrating their charming characters

  B. can move the masses with the skill and the charm

  C. are capable of meeting all challenges and hardships

  D. can provide an answer to the problems of their people

5. The author concludes that historical changes would ______.

  A. be delayed without leaders with inspiring personal qualities

  B. not happen without heroes making the necessary sacrifices

  C. take place if there were heroes to lead the people

  D. produce leaders with attractive personalities

I found that my way of learning English that I formed from middle school still works today. By listening to tapes and imitating the speakers one can improve his pronunciation within a short time. By reciting classic essays one can enrich their language as well as enlarge their vocabulary. As a non-English major, I like to set aside a certain period of time for English learning every day, usually an hour or at least half an hour. I utilize this precious time by listening to tapes and imitating their content and then reciting the short passages I like. To be frank, “Crazy English” has always been my favorite. This is definitely not intended to flatter. Instead of dividing my attention between too many materials, I’d rather concentrate on one particular resource at a time such as CE, not only because of its abundant content and native English, but also because of the benefits it has brought to me through intensive reading, listening and reciting, I believe that studying English by using these intensive methods will help you to get twice the result with half the effort.
