Microsoft founder Bill Gates said that he planned to give away almost all of his vast fortune , largely to the cause of global health , during the course of his lifetime . With an estimated(估計(jì))worth of more than $ 40 billion , according to Forbes , the project will be no small feat (功績)for Gates . Having already provided the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with $ 24 billion to address global health issues , Gates said that eventually his entire fortune will be put towards the cause except “a few percent left for the kids.”

Gates believes that “the equality of opportunity” in which Americans take such pride needs to extend to other nations around the world . Gates said that both his parents set an example for him as a child . His father , William H. Gates , was the head of the local Planned Parenthood , and his mother , Mary , volunteered for the United Way . As he gathered his fortune , Gates knew he would eventually want to give back as well , but he didn’t expect to devote himself whole-heartedly to one project until he was about 60.
However , Gates , 47 , began to question his ability to wait that long . “It seemed there was a real time urgency,” Gates said . “I started to think , How many lives could I save before then ?”

HOUSTON (Reuters) — Houston tops a U.S. magazine’s annual fattest cities list for the fourth time in five years, with four other Texas cities in the top 25.
Fast food restaurants — Houston has twice the national average number — are partly to blame for the dishonor, Men’s Fitness editor-in-chief Neal Boulton said.
“Americans work long hours, don’t take vacations, and when they’re faced with the worst food choices, they indulge (沉溺于) in those,” he said.
High humidity, poor air quality and some of the nation’s longest commute (每天去上班的路程) times also helped Texas’ most populous city unseat Detroit, the 2003 heavy weight champion, the magazine said.
Houston Mayor Bill White, who has worked with a major food company to develop healthy food products and the city’s public schools to improve lunch menus, called the report “mostly ungrounded and nonsense.”
“On the other hand, it calls attention to real issues the mayor is trying to deal with,” his spokesman, Frank Michel, said.
The magazine said it looked at factors such as the number and types of restaurants, park space, air quality, weather and the number of health clubs.
Philadelphia, Detroit, Memphis, Tennessee, and Chicago followed Houston on the seventh edition of the fat list. Texas cities Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth and El Paso were in the top 14, which Boulton said was no surprise.
“It’s pure big indulgence, just living big, and that’s part of the culture,” said Boulton.
Seattle ranked as the fittest city. Austin and Arlington, a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb, were the only Texas cities on the fit list. Austin was 19th and Arlington 22nd out of 25.

NEW YORK, May 19—A new, more destructive version of the “Love Bug ” virus is slowly spreading across the world, but so far the damage is small compared with its former version.
The new Love Bug virus creates disorder.
Richard Saunders of anti-viral firm Symantec said the virus only affected a dozen companies around the world.
“While it is a nasty virus, it’s not spreading anywhere near the rate Love But or (last year’s ) Melissa was spreading,” Saunders said.
“New Love” is similar in form to the Love Bug, which swept the world two weeks ago and caused more than $ 10 million in damages. But it’s much more destructive. The virus appears as an attachment to an e-mail whose subject begins with “FW”
If a user clicks on the attachment’s scroll-like icon(卷軸樣的圖標(biāo)), every file on his hard drive is destroyed.
“Basically, it’s going to destroy your machine, ” said Eric Chine, chief researcher at Symantec’s anti-virus lad in the Netherlands.
The Love Bug only killed a small set of files, including graphic files. This virus even wipes out the Windows operating system.
Attorney General Janet Reno warned the public at a news conference today to be careful of any suspicious e-mail with attachments. “Do not open it, even it comes from a trusted source.” she said.
Don’t Open That Attachments.
Like the Love Bug, after the e-mail attachment is opened and the virus is carried out, New Love sends itself to everyone in a victim’s Microsoft Outlook address book. Fortunately for users, the lesson is the same as from the Love Bug: If you see a message with an attachment whose name ends in vbs, with a scroll-like icon, don’t click on the attachment. Also like the Love Bug, this virus only affects computers running Windows 98, NT 4.0 Windows 95 with Internet Explorer 5.0 and can only spread if users rely on a Microsoft Outlook address book for e-mail. Microsoft will soon give a fix for Outlook that warns people or suspicious attachments, the company said.
68. According to the passage, so far the new Love Bug virus _________.
A. has made the whole world disordered
B. causes more damages than other forms of virus
C. is the newest and spreading the fastest
D. has affected 12 companies around the world
69. Computer users are warned in this article _________.
A. not to suspect e-mails beginning with “FW” subjects
B. not to open attachment of doubtful e-mails
C. to stop using Microsoft Outlook address book
D. to examine the Windows Operating System carefully
70. It can be suggested from the passage that _________.
A. the mail sent by a friend is surely free of the virus
B. the Microsoft Company will take action against the virus
C. all computers running Windows 98 will be affected
D. the users can not find the way to deal with the Love Bug.
71. The author writes this passage in order to _________.
A. compare some types of virus
B. explain how the Love Bug is formed
C. tell the readers something about a new virus
D. remind computer companies to kill the virus

The Oregonian(俄勒岡報(bào)) is the daily newspaper for the state of Oregon where the Hagens live. Since it is published in the largest city, which is Portland, most of the readers live within 50 miles of Portland.
From Monday to Saturday, the paper has about 75 pages, of which 20 pages are advertisements. It normally has 5 sections which are called Nation, Sports, Metro(大都會(huì)), Living and Business.
Nation is national news mostly with some international news about earthquakes, floods, and tensions(緊張)around the world. Sports cover the professional sports in season, college sports, and high school sports. Metro is local news of the city of Portland which includes political stories, crimes, and good neighbor articles. Living is the section with television programs, movies, comics, music, stories about pets, and advice. Business has listing of more than 10,000 stocks and a regular report about the stock market and business news. The advertising section includes apartments and houses, employment opportunities and items to buy, especially cars and trucks.
On Sunday, the paper is very large weighing more than two kilos. There are additional sections called Art, Books, International, and Travel. Since this is the day most Americans do not work, they have more time for reading. Each of the daily sections is longer so the newspaper is twice the size of the daily sections. However, the advertisements are nearly as many pages as the news on Sunday so the entire paper is more than four times larger than the daily paper.
Some companies print their own advertisements and pay to put them in The Oregonian. These include grocery(雜貨) stores, clothing stores, car agencies(代理處), camera and video equipment stores, toy stores, and computer stores. All of the companies feel that the best way to advertise is to put a beautiful color advertisement in every Sunday.

A report, published in last week's Journal of the American Medical Association, offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal(致命)accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.
The author also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased dramatically after 10 p. m.,and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car,the driver was even more likely to die in a late night accident.
Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with "really stupid behavior" than with just a lack of driving experience. "The basic thing, "he says, "is that adults who are responsible for issuing(發(fā)放) licenses fail to recognize how skilled a task driving is. "
Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to reduce the harm is to have so-called graduated licensing systems, in which getting a license is a slower process. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself capable of driving in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving at night with a limited number of passengers before graduating to get a full driving license.
Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have number limitation on passengers. California is the strictest, with a new driver prohibited from carrying any passenger under 20 for the first six months.
76.Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?
A. Adults giving a lift to teenagers on the highway after 10 p. m.
B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.
C. Adults driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.
D. A teenager getting a lift from a stranger on the highway at midnight.
77.According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to_______.
A. their frequent driving at night B. their lack of driving experience
C. their improper way of driving D. their driving with passengers
78.Which of the following statements is true according to Paragraph 3 ?
A. Teenagers should spend more time learning to drive.
B. Driving is a skill too difficult for teenagers to learn.
C. Teenagers should be limited in taking driving lessons.
D. People issuing license are partly responsible for the accidents.

D. the licensing systems should be improved
80.The present situation in about half of the states is that the graduated licensing system_______.
