I had not seen my parents for a long time. Last Saturday I drove a long way to visit them,  36   neither of them was at home. So I waited patiently at their home  37 their return. Not seeing them made me really  38 .

When we read books we seem to enter a new world. This new world can be similar to the one we are living in, or it can be very  31  .Some stories are told 32 they were true. Real people who live in a 33 world do real things; in other words, the stories are about people just like us doing what we do. Other stories, such as the Harry Potter books, are not  34 . They are characters and creatures that are very different from us and do things that would be 35 for us.
But there is more to books and writing than this. If we think about it, even realistic writing is only 36 . How can we tell the difference between what is real and what is not real? For example, when we read about Harry Potter ,we  37 seem to learn something about the real world. And when Harry studies magic at Hogwarts, he also learns more about his real life than  38 . Reading, like writing, is an action. It is a way of  39 . When we read or write something ,we do much more than simple look at words on a page. We use our 40--which is real—and our imagination—which is real in a different way --- to make the words come to life in our minds.
Both realism and fantasy(幻想) 41  the imagination and the “magic” of reading and writing to make us think. When we read 42  realistic, we have to imagine that the people we are reading about are just like us, even though we  43 that we are real and they are  44 . It sounds 45 ,but it works. In a way, we are writing the book, too.

My sister and I grew up in a little village in England. Our father was a struggling 1, but I always knew he was  2 . He never criticized us, but used  3 to bring out our best. A great many people are disappointed because of unrealistic expectations.
Walking up to a department store’s cloth counter, a(n)  1   young woman said, “I want to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?”

1. Expect too much  11  .When others say, “Thank you,” or in any way to show their gratitude, be happy. It is a gift!
2. Expect others to make you happy. They simply cannot do that. Make yourself happy and       12  your joy with others.
3. Expect not to be  13   . At times, people will simply not come through for you in the way you need.  14   them and move on.
Get rid of these three unrealistic expectations and you can begin to expect more   15        right away!

Failing doesn’t make a failure. True failures are those who don’t learn from their    1  .
Smart persons not only learn from their own mistakes—they pay  2 to the mistakes of others, equate error with opportunity, and learn valuable  3 as well, as this story illustrates (說明).
A lion, a fox, and a wild pig went   4  for rabbits together. By the end of the day, they had a large pile of rabbits to   5 .

I want to   32, to see the big picture, to climb higher, go farther, dive deeper, and  33  more. I want my soul enlarged and my heart inspired. I want to   34 running about following my nose and instead I want to find new strength, fresh   35  , clear vision and courage. I want to be more like the osprey and less like the field mouse, for to live like the field mouse is to ruin my potential.

From the time each of my children started school, I packed their lunches. And in each lunch, I  1  a note. Often written on a napkin (餐巾), it might be a thank-you for a  2  moment, a reminder of something we were happily expecting, or a bit of 3  for the coming test or sporting event.

Years ago, a Southern woman was in one of my workshops. When asked to tell a story that  36 her character (品質(zhì)), she described an  37 when she was 5. She was at her grandfather’s house  38 up in a beautiful white skirt and new gloves ,   39 as she could be.
Her grandfather told her she could go into the  40 and get herself a cookie. Next to the cookies was a pile of coins. Sure that no one was  41 , she took one of the coins, too.

Few things have as large an influence on  50 the values of a child as the strong pain of lovingly administered shame (羞愧). It helps judge right from wrong and gives a   51 emotional (感情的) dimension to moral (道德的) and character issues.
Kids, and adults for that matter, learn from their  52 . Parents, teachers and coworkers can remind them of their moral responsibilities without shaming or  53 them.
What we can’t do is just let  54 go, unless we want to send the message that’s okay. What we allow, we  55 . And we should never encourage anything other than moral excellence.
