I was born in Mississippi in the 1 960s.My disabilities were caused by lack of oxygen to my brain.I grew up knowing I was different. The first time I felt hurt was in Grade Five. The other fourth and fifth graders played together in the gym class, while I was put in the second grade gym class. One day, a famous football player visited the fourth and fifth grade P.E.class. All the kids got his autograph except me because I was with the second graders playing games. Mom called the school to tell them it wasn't fair, but the school blamed me for complaining too much.
In the 1980s, when my mom was delivering her baby, she died. My dad became even more distant. He never asked me if I wanted to talk about her death. I was depressed and began drinking wine to relieve the pain.
Dad got remarried in 1985. Everyone went to the wedding except me; he told me to stay home and watch the house. When my high school ball came around, I wanted to go but wasn't allowed. When I graduated, my dad and stepmom refused to hold a party for me. They put me in a group home after graduation.
My life changed when I became a local leader of the National Selfadvocacy Group. At first, I thought the group wasn't for me, until I found out it was all about empowerment! My goal is to be the voice for people who haven't been heard and to empower(使自主) them. Many families, like mine, don't believe that their disabled family member has a voice or mind of their own.
Looking back over my 16 years of leadership experience, I'm proud that I've helped disabled people. They should be encouraged to never give up and to follow their own path.

Clean air is made up of only nitrogen, oxygen, and water. As we have industrialized, our cities have grown and traffic has increased. With these development there has come an increase in the number of by-products released into the air, such as particles(細粒)from burning fuels and poisonous gases from chemical reactions. These gases become pollutants.
Air pollution has a bad effect on the earth and our environment. Air pollution can result in acid rain, and it can also lead to the Greenhouse Effect—a condition in which pollution stops radiation from traveling out of the Earth’s atmosphere. This upset to the natural process means that temperatures on Earth may not be maintained within natural ranges. Due to the Greenhouse Effect, temperatures on Earth become warmer, which is known as global warming. What’s worse, air pollution may produce holes in the ozone layer(臭氧層)— this layer of ozone naturally prevents ultra-violet rays (紫外線) from the sun reaching Earth. Holes make it possible for the rays to reach us.
Don’t let all the bad news about air pollution get you down because there are many ways to help fight the air pollution. Every one of us can employ a variety of air pollution solutions. A smoker can give up smoking. While shopping, you can choose organic and natural cleaning products. Driving less and carpool more can also contribute to less pollution. Next time, keep your air-conditioning low. Of course you can plant more trees.
Air pollution is a major problem for our planet. However, as long as we realize how serious the air pollution is and take actions now, everyone can make a difference!

Have you ever wondered why stems(莖)grow upwards and roots downwards? Why do plants always seem to turn towards the light and climbing plants run up rather than down? The answer is simple: auxin(生長素), a chemical substance that controls growth in plants.
Auxin gives away its secrets
Auxin is a plant hormone(激素). Darwin was already interested in it in the 19th century. Only in recent years, however, has the hormone started to give away its secrets, thanks to intensive molecular research. Auxin is produced in the young, growing parts
of plants and then transported throughout the plant—to a lowlying stem for example. The stem needs to straighten out as soon as possible to be able to absorb the topside, resulting in the underside growing faster and the stem straightening out. For the same reason, plants in front of windows will always turn to the light. This active regulation of auxin transport allows plants to take ideal advantage of local and changing conditions.
A new means of transport for auxin
The transport of auxin through the plant plays a vital role. And, from all appearances, it is not a simple matter. The researchers identified an important new link and means of transport for auxin: PILS proteins (蛋白質(zhì)). PILS p
roteins are vital for auxindependent plant growth and adjust the intracellular(細胞內(nèi)的)storage of the hormone. It is exactly this compartmentalizing (分類) of auxin that seems functionally important for the various developmental processes.
Growing crops more efficiently: the right amount of auxin in the right place
Higher auxin levels at the right moment and in the right place result in better growth and greater harvest. Better adjustment of auxin levels would make plants grow more efficiently. The researchers hope to contribute to the development of more efficient growing processes by continuing to sort out auxin transport processes.
66. Which of the following is TRUE of auxin according to the text?
A. It helps the plant to bend at the right places while growing.
B.It prevents the roots of plants from growing faster.
C.It is no use when the surroundings have changed.
D.It helps the underside of plants grow faster than the topside.
67. What would make plants grow more efficiently?
A. Straightening out the stem.
B.The right amount of auxin in the right place.
C.Allowing plants to turn to the light.
D.Enough PILS proteins.
68. From Paragraph 3 we know that ________.
A. the researchers are not so sure if the transport for auxin is a new one
B.the levels of auxin remain the same during the growing processes of plants
C.PILS proteins delay the growth of plants
D.PILS proteins play an important part in the transport of auxin
69.According to Paragraph 2, the researchers got their results mainly by ________.
A. referring to Darwin's theory
B.observing plants straightening
C.doing intensive molecular research
D.watching plants in different places
70.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A. Why Plants Grow Towards the Light?
B.Darwin's Dream Has Come True
C.How Did Scientists Find Out the Secret?
D.A New Way of the Growing of Plants

I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval, he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way.
Several weeks ago,I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines. I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he should concentrate better. He sat but seconds later, as if he didn't even notice he was doing it, he got up again. I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me. I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up. Could he be more intent while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe. I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to
success. This child would have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits, and all you can do is loving and accepting them.As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that, we need to be our kids' best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate. Obviously, he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine.We need to learn to accept our kids' ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn't mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique. It makes us free and happy and that's just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

Celebrating an 18th birthday is an important occasion for anyone, but for tiny Jyoti Amge, the milestone is even bigger news.
The teenager is already a celebrity(名人) in her hometown of Nagpur, India, but has now set a world record by officially being declared the world's smallest woman.

She sleeps in a speciallymade bed and uses things that are smaller than average. Also, Ms.Amge insists on being treated like a normal young woman, and enjoys doing her makeup, going shopping with friends or watching movies.
