Short reader – submitted stories – for the woman you should think of today!
——Compiled by Amy Zerello
Great Minds Reminded of Mom
After a long, exhausting day, a friend of mine, Allen, headed home. On the road, he passed an elderly woman who was standing by a car with a flat tire. If that were his mother, he thought, he would want someone to help her. With a tired sigh, he turned around and drove back.
Just as he reached the stranded woman, a truck pulled up and a burly farmer got out. "Kindof reminds you of your mom, too?" the man asked as the two of them pitched in together to change the tire for the woman.

Your Biggest Fan
While waiting in a bookstore for a guest author to sign her latest book, I leafed through some of the Civil War novels she had written. The woman in line behind me commented, "Those are the best books I've ever read. I couldn't put them down." Before I could reply, the author frowning, looked over and said, "Oh, come on, Mom!"

Head of the Household
My husband, Jeff, and I came across several problems while assembling our new computer system, so we called the help desk. The man on the phone started to talk to Jeff in computer jargon(行業(yè)術(shù)語), which confused us even more.
"Sir," my husband politely said, "please explain what I should do as if I were a four-year-old."
"Okay," the computer technician replied. "Sweetie, could you please put your mommy on the phone?"

PART FOUR WRITING SECTION A
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each blank. The Chilean earthquake, measuring 8.8 – magnitude, which struck early Saturday morning, released 500 times the energy of the 7.0 – magnitude quake that hit Haiti last month, a geophysicist told CBS’ “The Early Show. ” Tsunami warnings were issued for much of the Pacific, including Hawaii, following the quake that struck near the Chilean coast.
“When the earthquake occurred, it moved the land and then it moved the water causing the tsunami,” said U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Jessica Sigala. “And the coastal areas of Chile have already noticed the wave heights up to about 7 feet.”
Sigala said Hawaiians can expect to see the waves from this tsunami around 11:20 a.m. local time (about 4:20 p.m. ET). “So we have to wait and see how big the waves will be.”
“It's not so much the height [of the wave] but it's the width, it's how long the duration, and then it's also the speed at which it's traveling,” said co-anchor Kelly Cobiella “Correct me if I'm wrong, but these waves are traveling at the speed of a jetliner, about 500 miles per hour?”
“That's correct. It's a big block of water coming onto the land,” Sigala said.
Chile has already experienced several aftershocks following the quake.
“Aftershocks are definitely a concern,” said Sigala. "We always see aftershocks with a large quake and a shallow quake, which this one was. And as of right now, we've located about maybe 15 aftershocks and those are of the larger kind. I'm sure they felt much more than that.”
“A shallow earthquake just means that it happened pretty close to the surface,” said Sigala. “And because of that the energy is really close to the surface, where all the buildings and people are.”
50 deaths caused by aftershocks have been reported, according to the national emergency agency, adding the estimate casualties to 960.

For a girl who's interested in fashion, what would be the dream job? Being a model? Probably no — that's for a pencil thin who doesn't eat. One answer is, fashion stylist.
As more brands open stores in China to expand their reach, the increase in outdoor advertising might light a stylist spark in a girl's heart. Fashion magazine offices are crowded with interns (實習(xí)生), and fashionable brand HR managers get thousands of resumes of people looking for a stylist position.
"It looked too high before, but now I find it more approachable," said Xue Rui, 22, a Fudan University Chinese literature graduate who works as an assistant stylist at Hermès in Shanghai. "There is no certain principle in dressing up models, and you can try every way with your own distinct taste to make them pretty and attractive."
The attractiveness of this line of work is not only in the fabulous clothes. And it's not like it used to be: an insider's job with little recognition and even less money. Now it's a career with a profile, prospects and pay packet.
Girls can find it hard to ignore this tempt and the field is opening up to normal girls, not only style or fashion design majors. "A fashion designer knows how to make a dress pretty, but a stylist knows how to make a person beautiful, from head to toe," explained He Qing, 21, a junior in fashion design at the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology.
"You have to be 'all-round': from hair and make up to clothes, shoes, and accessories(配飾) to the event," said He. "You have to know everything, and handle several things at the same time. It's challenging. That's why I love it."
It's not, however, without its downside, no matter how great you may think it is, "It's incredibly hard work," said Chen Qianzhu, a stylist at the Chinese version of Elle magazine. "You need to build good relations with various people — stars, photographers, PR managers, other media, even airlines."
You need to take care of clothes in the workplace and pay for even a tiny spot you get on them, Chen said. "The worst thing is that you might work extremely hard for a week on some serious photos, but if the chief's not satisfied, you do them all over again."
1. A fashion stylist has to do the following EXCEPT _______.
A. make every effort to dress up models
B. make a model attractive, from hair to feet
C. pay for a tiny stain happening to the clothes
D. not to eat and keep a thin figure like a pencil
2. Xue Rui, He Qing and Chen Qianzhu are mentioned in the passage in order to ______.
A. show the strengths and weaknesses of the new type of career
B. compare the different changes about the occupation
C. make the article interesting and convincing
D. support an idea by giving enough evidence
3. The underlined world 'all-round' in Paragraph 6 can be replaced by ______.
A. all-star B. all-out C. all-powerful D. all-purpose
4. Where can the passage be found?
A. In a newspaper. B. In a magazine.
C. In an advertisement. D. In an essay written by a graduate.
