Next to e-mail, the most popular activity on the Internet is chatting, which is a kind of social interaction
(社會(huì)交互作用). If you ask someone what kind of things they do most on the Internet, they will answer
that they like to chat. This seems especially true of the younger generation. Below are some tips that will
make your chat experience friendly and fun.
Walking into a room and demanding age and sex (性別) is the most common mistake a new chatter makes.
Most regular chatters will ignore (不理會(huì)) the question and you. Don't limit yourself. Talk to everyone in
the room equally. You will soon know who shares your interests and who doesn't. If you prefer a one-on-one
type of online friendship, then maybe you'd better look for pal (好友).
Shy? Many people feel shy when they enter a chat room where everyone seems to know everyone else
except him. It's really easy to feel left out. The best way to lose that feeling is to make yourself feel that you
are not a stranger. If you enter a room and say "Hello, everyone! My name (nickname here) and I'm new."
You will find that there are a couple of friendly people that will be happy to help you become part of them.
Basically the best way to have a good chat experience is to be yourself and friendly. Try to join in the
conversations going on and don't be afraid to ask for help. Do remember, however, not everyone is nice and
friendly. There are also going to be a few people that are rude and just make you feel rotten. The best thing
to do is just ignore them. Arguing with them will just make it worse. Show that you are better than they are
by just refusing to let them get to you.

Five tips to deal with stress
Stress, the biggest enemy of the modern world! It kidnaps our peace of mind, tortures our evenings,
when we return home from work and murders those beautiful moments. But like all enemies, this enemy
can also be got rid of!
Put your body in motion.
Moving from the chair to the couch while watching TV is not being physically active! Physical activity
is one of the most important ways to keep stress away by clearing your head and lifting your spirits.
Physical activity also increases endorphin levels-the natural "feel-good" chemicals.
Laugh
Some say that laughter is the best medicine-well, in many cases, it is! Did you know that it takes 15 facial
muscles to laugh? Lots of laughing can make you feel good-and, that good feeling can stay with you even
after the laughter stops. So, head off stress with regular doses of laughter by watching a funny movie or
cartoons, reading a joke book, or even make up your own riddles…laughter can make you feel like a new
person!
Everyone has those days when they do something really silly or stupid. Instead of getting upset with
yourself, laugh out loud! No one's perfect! Life should be about having fun. So, lighten up!
Have fun with friends.
Being with people you like is always a good way to get rid of your stress. Get a group together to go to
the movies or play a board game-or just hang out and talk. Friends can help you work through your problems
and let you see the brighter side of things.
Spill (發(fā)泄) to someone you trust.
Instead of keeping your feelings bottled up inside, talk to someone you trust or respect about what's
bothering you. It could be a friend, a parent, someone in your family, or a teacher. Talking out your problems
and seeing them from a different view might help you figure out ways to deal with them. Just remember,
you don't have to go it alone!
Lend a hand.
Get involved in an activity that helps others. It's almost impossible to feel stressed out when you're helping
someone else. It's also a great way to find out about yourself and the special qualities you never knew you
had! Signing up for a service project is a good idea, but helping others is as easy as saying hello, holding a
door, or volunteering to keep a neighbor's pet. The feeling you will get from helping others is greater than
you can imagine! In conclusion, remember, you're not alone-everyone has stresses in their lives…it's up to
you to choose how to deal with them.

It is not unusual at all for teens to answer their parents with one-word answers. "Where are you going?"
"Places." "When will you be back?" "Sometime." "Who will you be with?" "People."
That means that the days of your children bounding in the front door with the details of their day are over.
They are breaking away from you so that they'll be able to stand on their own as a young adult.
Some parents feel sad about this loss of their children's closeness. Of course you miss those conversations
and friendly talks. Once your children move out after high school and establish themselves confidently as a
young adult, they'll come back for easy conversations and even ask for advice. But in order to determine who
they are right now they need to separate from you.
Your job, however, is to keep them safe-and that requires knowing there they are and who they are with.
Let them know clearly that it's not because you want to dominate their life and control them; it's because it's
a safety issue for family members to keep track of one another.
When they're home and sit down to eat a meal, sit down with them. You need to open up to them about
your life. Tell them of an interesting incident at the office, let them in on a bit of family gossip (閑談), discuss
a piece of news with them. They are glad that you see them as old enough to be in on a few experiences of
your life. By letting a teen in on your life, they just may let you in of theirs.

[     ]
A. their awareness of independence
B. their physical and mental changes

Advertising can have both negative and positive effects. Consumers may be convinced to buy a product
of poor quality on high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisers have appealed to
(迎合) people's desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve
gasoline mileage (英里數(shù)). Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers'
money.
Sometimes advertising is misleading on purpose. A few years ago a brand of bread was offered to dieters
(節(jié)食者) with the message that there were fewer calories (熱量單位, 大卡) in every slice. It turned out that
the bread was not dietetic (適合于節(jié)食的). But there were the same number of calories in every loaf.
On the positive side, Advertising may sometimes respond to a consumer's real needs. Consider fire
insurance (保險(xiǎn)). Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason
for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the buy of fire
insurance a worthwhile investment (投資) for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance
plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising.
Each consumer must be clear about her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important
enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy
the product. Consumers still control the final buying decision.
1. The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that _____.
[     ]
A. the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same
B. thin slices of bread could contain more calories
C. the loaf was cut into regular slices
D. the bread was not real bread
2. The passage tells us that _____.
[     ]
A. advertisements often force consumers into buying things they don't need
B. the buying motives of consumers are controlled by advertisements
C. sometimes advertisements really sell what the consumer needs
D. fire insurance is seldom a worthwhile investment
3. It can be inferred from the passage that a smart consumer should _____.
[     ]
A. be familiar with various advertising skills
B. think carefully about the benefits described in the advertisements
C. know the nature of advertisements is cheating
D. avoid buying products described in the advertisements
4. The passage is mainly about _____.
[     ]
A. ways to protect the interests of the consumer
B. how to make a wise buying decision
C. the function of advertisements in increasing sales
D. the positive and negative aspects of advertising

Michael, a normal American, stays home on workdays. He plugs into his personal computer terminal in
order to connect with the office. After work he puts on his headphones, watches a movie on his home video
recorder or plays baseball on the computer. On many days, Michael doesn't talk to any other human beings,
and he doesn't see any people except the ones on television. Michael is imaginary, but his life style is very
possible
. The inventions of modern technology seem to be cutting us off from communicating with our fellow
human beings.
The world of business is one area in which technology is separating us. Experts say, for example, that
many people will soon be able to work at home. With access to a large central computer, employees such as
office clerks, insurance agents, and accountants could do their job at display terminals in their own homes.
They would never have to actually see the people they're dealing with. Also, the way employees are paid will
change. Workers' salaries will be automatically paid into their bank accounts, making paper checks
unnecessary. No workers will stand in line to receive their pay or cash their checks. Personal banking will
change, too. Customers will deal with machines to put in or take out money from their accounts.
Another area in which technology is changing is entertainment. Music, for instance, was once a group
experience. People listened to music at concert halls or in small social gatherings. For many people now,
however, music is an individual experience. Walking along the street or sitting in their living rooms, they wear
headphones to build a wall of music around them. Movie entertainment is changing, too. Movies used to be
social events. Now, fewer people are going out to see a movie. Many more are choosing to wait for a film to
appear on television or are borrowing videotapes to watch at home. Instead of laughing with others, viewers
watch movies in their own living rooms.
1. The underlined sentence in the first paragraph means _____.
[     ]
A. Michael is a person full of imagination and his dreams can come true
B. Michael is not a real person but the life style does exist
C. Michael has ambitions but he can't make his dreams come true
D. Michael is full of imagination and his life style is common nowadays
2. What does the author discuss in the last paragraph?
[     ]
A. Technology is changing ways of entertainment.
B. People will never go to the concert in future.
C. How to borrow videotapes at home.
D. How to see a movie at home.
3. What is the main idea of the passage?
[     ]
A. We may no longer need to communicate with other people.
B. Modern technology seems to be separating people.
C. We may no longer need to work in the office.
D. Modern technology makes it possible for us to work at home.

hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearance, attitude (態(tài)度)
and manners.

positive attitude.
When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake.
Others don't.
Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sit, walk, gesture,

abilities? Your interest in the job?
Speak clearly and loudly enough. Show interest and enthusiasm in your voice. When you speak, look at
the interviewer. Also, don't say negative things about yourself, or former employer.

     "I'm sorry, but I didn't catch that."
"I'm not sure exactly what you mean."

calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence
in your ability to do the job.

It's a good idea to send a short thank-you letter right after the interview, or deliver it by hand.
