car or home; until spring; until you are born again to decide that there is no better time than right now to be
happy...

                                            Dog Translation Products Coming to U. S.
     A Japanese toy maker declares that they have developed a gadget that translates dog barks into human
language and plans to begin selling the gadget--under the name of Bowlingual--in U. S. pet stores and gift
shops this summer.
      Tokyo-based Takara Co. Ltd. says about 300, 000 of the dog translator gadgets have been sold since it
was on sale in Japan late last year. It is forecasting far bigger sales once an English language translation for
dogs comes to America in August. The United States is home to about 67 million dogs, more than six times
the number in Japan.
      "We know that the Americans love their dogs so much, so we don't think they will mind spending $ 120
on this product," the Takara marketing manager said during an interview at a recent pet products conference
in Atlanta.
     Regarded as one of the coolest inventions of 2002 by Time magazine, Bowlingual is made up of a 3 - inch
long wireless microphone that is fastened (綁/系) to a dog collar and sends out sounds to a small console (控
制臺) that is connected to a database (數(shù)據(jù)庫). The console divides each bark into six emotional types-happiness, sadness, disappointment, anger, threat and desire--and shows common phrases, such as "You're ticking me
off," that fit the dog's emotional state.

     Codes are one way of writing in secret. Ciphers (暗碼) are another. In a code each word is written as a

     The majority(=Most) of your readers must have been surprised and shocked to read a letter from Mr.R.
Hogg, published in last Wednesday's Herald. Mr. Hogg seems to think that his own convenience and that of
motorists in general are the only things that matter in our city.
     I would have supported Mr. Hogg if he had just made suggestions to improve the situation. No doubt his
problems would be partly solved if the local government built a multi-storey car park in the city center, instead
of encouraging motorists to use public transport. All the same, judging from the tone of Mr. Hogg's letter, I
suspect that motorists who are so careless of pedestrians' (行人) safety that they would rather park their ears
on the pavement than hold up the traffic would probably be too lazy to use a multi-storey car park if they had
to walk a few hundred yards to their destination afterwards.
      My main reason for writing, however, is much more important. Does Mr.Hogg realize that, according to
figures (數(shù)字) showed by the Department of Transport,13,000 people were knocked down in Britain last year
because of ears being illegally parked either on the pavement or on crossings? In fact, although the total
pedestrian casualty (傷亡事故) rate has fallen over the last ten years, there has been an increase in accidents
