From preschool forward, most teachers strongly urge parents to have their children read-or be read
to-on a reading schedule throughout the year. This includes summer months, holiday breaks, or any time
when school is out. The key is to always make reading fun and a time to look forward to. Then what are
things parents should keep in mind to create fun reading?
Take advantage of weather. Be adventurous and make it a game as to where you should read to your
child and what. In warm weather, read next to a pond or lake, under a tree, or even in the tree house.
One mother reads to her young child in their children's pool in the backyard during the summer months.
Another mom finishes the longedfor daily trip to the park in the spring or fall by reading a book before
they leave. Cold months can mix reading activities by having books about snowmen, snowfalls, winter
holidays, or sports such as ice skating.
Build a reading activity into life's planning. Children of all ages should learn the connection between
reading and knowledge. If your family is adding a flower bed, have children read about how to prepare a
bed, what kinds of flowers are suitable for the area of the country and when they should be planted.
Getting a new family pet? Read up on varieties of dogs, care required, and even stories about children
and their pets. Traveling somewhere? You guessed it, read all about your destination first and you and
your children will have the added benefit of knowing more about the area when you arrive.
Create a book discussion. Some fun ways for kids are to have book discussions, which can be done
with family members by flashlight in the backyard, during a summer outing, or even over breakfast. Be
creative! Parents may ask the child some questions, such as: Did you like the book? Why or why not?
Who was your favorite character? Did you like how it ended? Parents can also create a book club with
kids in the neighborhood, where they can have a book discussion. A simple discussion may last as short
as 20 minutes, or longer as appropriate. The book club may have each child tell about a particular book
they read each week. Taking turns with sharing books can bring a lot of fun!

You may be surprised to learn that employers generally are not looking for candidates with the best
grade point averages, who were involved in the most clubs, or scored the highest in sports. They want to
find employees who are the best fit for the job. Why? Those candidates will stay the longest.
The average college graduate stays with her first employer for only nine months. Employers have
concluded that most new young hires are unrealistic about what entry-level jobs needs and will soon
leave in search of something "better". They're right.
This costs companies a lot of money, because training new hires is expensive. It's not surprising, then,
that most companies-especially those with training programs-will be interested in whether you're likely to
remain in that position.
How can you show a company you won't move on too soon? You must display a true interest in the
industry, in the job function itself, and particularly in that employer. Intelligently discussing the company,
current trends in the industry and showing that you are genuinely interested in the job are two great ways
to communicate to an interviewer that you're a low-risk hire.
Maturity is another factor that employers weigh heavily. Some students or recent graduates, in
one-on-one situations with older adults, may not come across as being mature and confident enough for
the professional world. Unfortunately, such judgments are often made based on assumptions, but they are
sometimes based on an impression made during a job interview. It is up to you to convince the employer
otherwise. When on a job interview, make sure you project yourself as a mature candidate wlio is ready to
enter the business community. Practice a firm handshake and learn how to make good eye contact.

The most important factor (因素) that leads to success is what you do every single day. Your habits will
decide whether you are successful or not. If you have strong and healthy positive habits, it does not matter
whether or not you fail today because you will succeed in the long term. Having positive habits does not mean
that you will succeed every single time. However, in the long term, there is no doubt that you will achieve all
your goals and be successful. On the other hand, if you have strong negative habits, you will fail in the long
term. It does not matter whether you succeed today or not. Why are habits so important?
A single positive action will not change your life, but the same action repeated 1,000 times will have a great
effect on your life. For example, if you go to the gym one time, you won't see a big difference in your life.
However, if your go to the gym 1,000 time over a five-year period, you will see a big difference in your body.
The same principle (原則) is true of finance (金融), health, relationships, work, career, and school. Simple
positive actions repeated every single day will have a great effect on your life in the long run. How to develop
positive habits?
There's nothing easier than developing positive habits. You simply have to do every single day the action
you want to make a habit. If you want to develop the habit of running, run almost every day. If you want to
develop the habit of reading, read every day. Habits are created by repetition (重復(fù)). The more you do an
action. the easier it becomes in the long run. How to get rid of negative habits?
The only way to destroy negative habits is to stop reinforcing (加強(qiáng)) them. If you are a smoker, stop
smoking. If you are a drug user, stop using drugs. Yes, it will be very difficult at the beginning. The first
week will be very hard. After three weeks, you will feel a lot better. It's hard to get rid of negative habits
because you got a lot of pleasure from these habits in the past. You can do it!
Everybody can change. All it takes is courage and determination. Decide right now to improve your life
by changing your habits. Take action right now! Don't be afraid. Yes, you will probably make mistakes along
the way. But never forget that success is waiting for you if you have positive habits in your life. If you refuse
to give up, success will be yours.

閱讀理解。
A lazy Susan is an addition to a table that is designed to assist in moving food from one person to another
while dining. This is achieved through the use of a turntable (轉(zhuǎn)盤(pán)), which usually moves the food in a circle
when it is pushed by those at the table. In this way, the food never has to be picked up and passed around the
table. Instead, it remains in place on the lazy Susan.
A lazy Susan may also be a part of a kitchen cabinet (櫥柜). In this sense, the lazy Susan is a type of
shelving unit within the cabinet that is able to turn around its axis (軸心). One may turn the lazy Susan in order
to find certain goods in storage. From the outside, a lazy Susan appears to be two cabinets that are located at
a right angle (直角) to each another. When one of these cabinets is pushed, however, both doors move and the
lazy Susan is revealed inside.
It is believed that Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan in the 18th century, though it was called
"dumbwaiter" at that time. It is said that Jefferson invented the lazy Susan because his daughter complained
she was always served last at table and, as a result, never found herself full when leaving the table. Others
believe that Thomas Edison was the inventor, as he is believed to have invented the turntable for his
phonograph (留聲機(jī)). The turntable may have developed into the lazy Susan later.
Regardless of who invented it, it wasn't until 1917 that the term"lazy Susan" was used in an advertisement
for the invention. In Britain, however, the term"dumbwaiter" is still used rather than"lazy Susan". The reason
for the naming of it is still a mystery. One theory is that it was named after either Jefferson's or Edison's
daughter, both of whom were named Susan.
1. What is a "lazy Susan"?
A. A waitress
B. A convenient tool
C. A table
D. A cabinet
2. According to those who believed Thomas Jefferson invented the lazy Susan, ______.
A. his daughter was very lazy
B. the lazy Susan didn't exist until the 18th century
C. Thomas Edison was his friend
D. Thomas Edison didn't invent the phonograph
3. We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.
A. the lazy Susan can work by itself
B. the lazy Susan was named after Thomas Edison's daughter
C. how the lazy Susan got its name remains unknown
D. the lazy Susan was invented in Britain
4. The writer wrote the passage mainly to _______.
A. discuss how the lazy Susan was named
B. teach us how to make a lazy Susan
C. introduce Thomas Edison's inventions
D. tell us what a lazy Susan is and its origin

A powerful earthquake struck the northeastern coast of Japan at 2:46 p.m. local time on March
11th. Japan's Meteorological Agency released its first tsunami warnings just three minutes later. The
country has one of the best earthquake early warning systems in the world. More than 4,000 Seismic
Intensity Meters provide information within two minutes of an earthquake happening.
There are also concrete sea walls around much of the Japanese coastline. But these measures
proved no match for the powerful earthquake and tsunami.
Costas Synolakis is a tsunami expert in the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He
says: "Japan is one of those most well-prepared countries on earth in terms of tsunami warning. They
had a warning. I think what went wrong is that they had not anticipated the size of this event."
He says there are two reasons for this. First, scientists had not expected such a large earthquake.
The 9.0 magnitude earthquake was the 4th most powerful earthquake ever recorded worldwide. It
was also the worst ever to hit Japan. The tsunami waves reached as high as 13 meters in some areas.
Second, Japan's concrete sea walls were not built to handle such high waves.  " In Sendai(仙臺(tái)),
they were about three meters. At least in that area they were not expecting such a sizeable wave
because they would have built a higher seawall."
A tsunami wave can travel as fast as 800 kilometers per hour. To get to higher ground people would
often have to travel for many kilometers. This can take more time than a fast traveling tsunami will permit.
This is especially true in cases like Japan. The tsunami waves followed almost immediately.
Experts say early warning systems will continue to be limited by these facts until earthquakes and
tsunamis can be predicted.
1. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. A powerful earthquake hit Japan.
B. Japan has the best earthquake early warning system.
C. Japan can report an earthquake before it happens.
D. Better equipment should have been used.
2. According to Costas Synolakis, ________.
A. Japan had a warning of such a serious earthquake
B. Japan has experienced the worst earthquake worldwide
C. the Japanese should have built higher seawalls
D. The Japanese were not really prepared for such a disaster
3. According to the writer, why hadn't people got to higher ground?
A. Because tsunami doesn't leave much time for them.
B. Because they thought the seawalls were reliable.
C. Because higher ground can't be reached at all.
D. Because didn't know there would be a tsunami.
4. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Early warning systems are basically unreliable.
B. Earthquakes and tsunamis will soon be predicted.
C. We have to accept the imperfect systems for the moment.
D. New warning systems will be designed to predict disasters.
