NANJING, June 13, 2009 (Xinhua)-China will see the longest total solar eclipse (日食) in 500 years on
July 22, a scientist said Saturday.
The most important time of the total eclipse was expected
to begin from 9:00 a.m. to 9:38 a.m. (Beijing Time), said
Wang Sichao, a research fellow with the Nanjing-based
Purple Mountain Observatory under the Chinese Academy of
Sciences. "The total eclipse will last up to six minutes, which
is the longest one that can be seen in China in almost 500 years
from 1814 to 2309," Wang said.
He said viewers in parts of eleven provinces in China's southwestern, central-southern and eastern areas,
such as Tibet, Hunan and Jiangsu, will be able to witness the total solar eclipse, while in most parts of Shanghai,
viewers can also see the fantastic phenomenon. For viewers in other provinces, including Beijing, they can
observe a part of the eclipse, he said.
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon is caught between the sun and the earth while each of them moves
along their fixed orbits. In a total solar eclipse, the sun, the moon and the earth are directly in a line as the sun
swings into the shadow cast by the moon.
Wang said the next total solar eclipse that can be seen in China will fall on March the 20th, 2034. "But it can
only be seen in-remote provinces, such as Tibet and Qinghai. It cannot not be compared with the upcoming one-
in terms of time of lasting and number of cities that can see the eclipse," he added. The last total solar eclipse
visible in China took place on the first of August last year. It was observed in northwest China and lasted two
minutes in Yiwu County of north-western Xinjiang, the best place to see the phenomenon.
1. According to the report, the total eclipse on July the 22nd will last _____.
[     ]
A. over a month
B. about 38 minutes
C. about 6 minutes
D. less than 30 minutes
2. Viewers can possibly witness the total solar eclipse in _____.
[     ]
A. Liaoning
B. Sichuan
C. Beijing
D. Xinjiang
3. When a total solar eclipse happens, _____.
[     ]
A. the moon goes into the shadow cast by the sun
B. the earth stays between the sun and the moon
C. the sun temporarily moves into the moon's orbit
D. the sun is in a line with the moon and the earth
4. Which is the best title for this report?
[     ]
A. China to witness longest total solar eclipse in 500 years
B. The most important total solar eclipse will favor China
C. The beginning time of the total solar eclipse is expected
D. China has been the best place to witness the solar eclipse

JOHANNESBURG (AP)-FIFA has finally acknowledged that there may be something wrong with the
Jabulani-the South Africa World Cup ball, but won't act on the problem until after the tournament.
Many players have complained that the Jabulani is too unpredictable and flies through the air too easily.
"We're not deaf," FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said Saturday at a news conference. "FIFA has
heard about what has been said about the ball."
Valcke said that FIFA would discuss the matter with coaches and teams after the World Cup, then meet
with the manufacturer Adidas. "There are rules for size and weight, but the ball has to be perfect," he added.
But Goalkeepers have complained about the ball at every recent World Cup match.
Brazil's headcoach Dunga got into a quarrel with Valcke over the Jabulani before the tournament,
challenging FIFA officials to come out onto the field and attempt to control it. "The balls have changed over
the last couple of years, they have become a lot faster and in addition to that in Johannesburg we are playing
at an altitude of 1 700 meters, which makes the ball even faster," former Germany goalkeeper Oliver Kahn
said. "Thus the goalkeepers work even harder, but I don't think that we can take the ball or the altitude as
excuses."
Scoring was down by 16 goals in the first round compared to 2006: 117-101. However, teams played a
more defensive style in the group stage in South Africa, so whether the ball was a major factor is difficult to
measure.
Adidas has made the World Cup ball since 1970. The German company says it doesn't know what the
problem is about because all the 32 teams were given the ball before the tournament to test it.
1. Many players have complained that the Jabulani _____.
A. flies too high in the air
B. is too colorful
C. has problems in size and weight
D. is difficult to control
2. When will FIFA seriously look into the problem about the Jabulani?
A. During the South Africa World Cup.
B. After the South Africa World Cup.
C. During the second round of the South Africa World Cup.
D. Before the first round of the South Africa World Cup.
3. It can be inferred that in the past several World Cups _____.
A. the ball became smaller
B. the ball became heavier
C. there was complaint about the ball
D. there was high praise for Adidas
4. Which of the following would Oliver Kahn agree with?
A. The Jabulani is too unpredictable for goalkeepers.
B. Goalkeeper should work harder to control a faster ball.
C. FIFA should test the Jabulani before the World Cup.
D. Players should work hard to change their playing styles.

                                                             Oldest Ever Galaxy Found
WASHINGTON(AP)-Astronomers believe they've found the oldest thing they've ever seen in the universe:
It's a galaxy (星系) far, far away from a time long, long ago.
Hidden in a Hubble Space Telescope photo released earlier this year is a small point of light that European
astronomers now calculate is a galaxy from 13.1 billion years ago. That's a time when the universe was very
young, just about 600 million years old. That would make it the earliest and most distant galaxy seen so far.
By now the galaxy is so ancient it probably doesn't exist in its earlier form and has already changed into
bigger neighbors, said Matthew Lehnert of the Paris Observatory, lead author of the study published online
Wednesday in the journal Nature.
"We are looking at the universe when it was a 20th of its current age," said California Institute of
Technology astronomy professor Richard Ellis, who wasn't part of the discovery team."In human terms,
we're looking at a 4-year-old boy in the lifetime of an adult."
While Ellis finds the basis for the study "pretty good", there have been other claims about the age of distant
space objects that have not held up to careful examination. And some experts have questions about this one.
But even the doubters praised the study as important and interesting.
The European astronomers calculated the age after 16 hours of observations from a telescope in Chile that
looked at light signatures of cooling hydrogen gas.
Earlier this year, astronomers had made a general estimate of 600 to 800 million years after the Big Bang
(宇宙大爆炸) for the most distant unclear points of light in the Hubble photograph, which was presented at
an astronomy meeting back in January.
In the new study, researchers focused on a single galaxy in their analysis of hydrogen's light signature,
further finding out the age. Garth Illingworth of the University of California, Santa Cruz, who was the
scientist behind the Hubble image, said it provided confirmation for the age using a different method,
something he called amazing "for such faint objects".
1. We can learn from the passage that ______.
A. the universe came into being about 14 billion years ago
B. the galaxy is believed to be the same as it was just born
C. the newly-discovered galaxy is the oldest one in the universe
D. the galaxy had traveled about 600 millions before the scientists found it
2. We can infer from the fourth paragraph that ______.
A. the universe is actually very young
B. the life-time of the universe is surprisingly long
C. the humans have been so able as to see far into the universe
D. what we can see about the universe now is just the tip of the iceberg
3. What did some people doubt according to the fifth paragraph?
A. The importance of the discovery
B. The truth of the discovery
C. The actual age of the new galaxy
D. The size of the new galaxy

London: It's well known that Charles Darwin's famous theory of evolution annoyed many
people because it was against the Biblical view of creation. But few know that it also created
problems for Darwin at home with his deeply religious wife, Emma.
"Darwin held back the publication of On the Origin of Species to avoid offending (觸怒)
his wife," says Ruth Padel, the naturalist's great - great - granddaughter. "Emma told him that
he seemed to be putting God further and further off", Padel says in her north London home.
"But they talked it through, and Emma once said, 'Don't change any of your ideas for fear of
hurting me.'"
As the world celebrates the 200th birthday of the man who changed scientific thought forever
and the 150th anniversary of his book today, even his opponents admitted he was a giant figure.
Though opposition to his theory continues, it is the elegant explanation of how species evolutes
through natural selection that makes his 200th birthday such a major event.
More than 300 celebrations have been planned in Britain alone, where Darwin's face graces
(使增光)the 10-pound bill along with that of Queen Elizabeth II.
Shrewsbury, the central England town where Darwin was born and raised, is holding a
month-long festival for its most famous son. Down House, his former home near London, will hold
a permanent exhibition recreating some of his most famous experiments.
