Black Americans make up eleven and a half percent of the total population of the United States. They are the descendants(后裔) of Africans who had been brought to America as slaves in the 17th and 18th centuries. During the Civil War (1861-1865) between the Northern States of the U.S. and the slave holding Southern States, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in the United States.
For a few years after the war, the freed slaves had the same rights as all White Americans--according to the law. Actually, however, many, perhaps most, could not exercise their rights to the full, as they were uneducated and ignorant (無知的); moreover, they had no land or other means of production. So they were largely at the mercy of their former masters. Black Americans continued to be treated unfairly despite their liberation. It was not long before the former slave-owners got back political power in the Southern States and began to pass state laws to push the black people into slavery again. Besides effectively taking away the black people's right to vote, they passed laws to keep white and black people separated and to prevent blacks from getting certain jobs.
It was not until almost a century later that blacks began to demand their rights as American citizens. They struggled against racism and all of the state discrimination(歧視) laws. The Civil Rights Movement was at its height in the early 1960's and in 1964,the Civil Rights Act was passed, making discrimination in all public places illegal. Today legal discrimination is ended but social discrimination is still widespread. Black Americans and all other minority peoples in the United States will never be free and equal until they have economic freedom and cultural equality.

One day Burton took his children to the zoo. He told them to be ready at two o'clock, but they weren't all ready then: little Tommy couldn't find his shoes. He could find his brown shoes, but he couldn't find his black shoes, and wanted to wear his black shoes to the zoo. At a quarter past two his brothers and sisters told him to wear his brown shoes. Their mother waved goodbye and told them to enjoy their trip to the zoo. Then she sat down to read a book in the empty, quiet house.
When they got to the zoo, Burton told the children to stay with; he didn't want them to get lost in the zoo. Little Tommy asked his father to buy some food for the bears; but his father answered:“Look at that notice, Tommy. It tells us not to feed the animals.”
“Why does it tell us not to feed the animals?”asked Tommy.
“Because they get a lot of food already.”said Burton.“And people often try to give them the wrong food; that's bad for the animals.”
At three o'clock the dolphin (海豚) show began. All the Burtons wanted to see it, so Mr. Burton bought seven tickets and took the children down to the dolphinarium(海豚館). The dolphins did a lot of tricks: they jumped up into the air and flew through hoops (大鐵圈) over the water; they caught rubber rings with their noses; and they played‘basketball’with red and yellow balls. The trainer blew his whistle when he wanted the dolphins to do something, and when they did it he gave them some fish.
“How can the dolphins do all those tricks?”asked the little Tommy.
“Because they are very intelligent (聰明的),”said his big brother.“They can understand when their trainer tells them to do something; and they like to do tricks (耍把戲). because he always gives them some fish when they do them.”
“That's good,”said Tommy.“I like to do tricks too; why doesn't Father give me some candies (糖果) when I do them?”

In the near future some parts of the world may soon have a new kind of television. It is called high definition television or H-D-T-V. The main difference between H-D-T-V and normal television is the picture. It is more clear and detailed (明細(xì)). This is because H-D-T-V has many more points and lines that make a television image (圖像). Every colour television picture contains thousands of red, green and blue points, They all come together as an image in the eye of the person
watching. The points are organized in lines that go across the television screen. There are more than 500 lines in a normal television. H-D-T-V has two times as many. To get this clear picture, you must have a big screen. Experts say people using a small screen will see little difference.
H-D-T-V also has clear sound. It is like the sound on a compact disc player (激光電唱機(jī)), or CD. All these improvements make H-D-T-V very costly. One kind in Japan now sells for more than 20 000 dollars. In the future, the cost is expected to be about 2 000 dollars. A major problem with H-D-T-V is its broadcast signal. The signal is bigger than for normal, because it carries more electronic in formation.
1.The main difference between an H-D-T-V and a normal television is ________.
[ ]
A.that the picture of normal TV is normal
B.that H-D-T-V is new and good
C.that H-D-T-V is so new that not all parts of the world have got it at present
D.that the picture of an H-D-T-V is more clear and detailed
2.A colour TV image is ________.
[ ]
A.made up of thousands of red, green and blue points
B.formed by the above-mentioned red, green and blue points which are organized in lines that go across the TV screen
C.a(chǎn) black-and-white picture
D.both A and B
3.An H-D-T-V has ________ lines.
[ ]
4.If you want to get a clear and detailed picture from an H-D-T-V, you ________.
[ ]
A.must have the bigger signal for H-D-T-V
B.have to get a big screen
C.should have a compact disc player
D.both A and B
5.According to the passage, which of the following is right?
[ ]
A.The H-D-T-V sets are not popular now because they are too expensive for most people.
B.The signal for an H-D-T-V is not bigger than that for the normal TV.
C.In the future an H-D-T-V will cost 10 times as much as it costs now.
D.In the future an H-D-T-V will be cheaper only because 2 000 dollars will be just equal to 20 000 dollars.

The sea world is divided into three main oceans, the Pacific, the Atlantic and the Indian and two smaller oceans, the Arctic or the Northern Ocean, and the Antarctic or the Southern Ocean. The Pacific is by far the largest of these, for it covers half the sea- area of the world. In addition to the oceans there are other areas of sea, such as the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, the North Sea, the Caribbean Sea (加勒比海) and the Black Sea.
The continents are entirely surrounded by what is called the “continental shelf” which slopes (傾斜) gradually to a depth of about 500 feet. This shelf is built up of sediment (沉積物) which has been brought down to the sea by the continental river. Where the land near the coast is low and flat, the continental shelf may extend thirty, forty or even more miles from the coast; where mountain ranges run parallel (平行的) to the sea and near to it ( as on the east coast of Africa), the shelf is narrowed to only a mile or two.
From the edge of the shelf the sea- bed slopes sharply downwards so that the depth of water from the surface rapidly becomes greater, down to perhaps 1,200 feet.
