Former Irish President Mary Robinson was just making a polite conversation with an Ethiopian(埃塞俄比亞的)teenager about her wedding day.The 16yearold had already been married for a year.“She looked at me with the saddest eyes and said,‘I had to drop out of school’,” Robinson said in a telephone interview.“That conveyed to me the reality,” said Robinson, the first woman to serve as Ireland's President and former U.N.High Commissioner for Human Rights.“Her life,as far as she is concerned, had more or less ended.”
Robinson said keeping girls in school was one of the most important things policymakers could do to address the coming challenges of an everincreasing population, predicted by the United Nations to reach 7 billion soon.“European countries are concerned about aging populations, but this is much less of an issue than the huge number of people which we are going to see over the next 40 years when the population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion,” she said.“Almost all of that increase will be in poor developing countries,so that we have a very big challenge.”
Family planning experts worry in particular about the future population explosion in SubSaharan Africa. In May,the United Nations projected the world population would reach 9.3 billion in 2050 and 10.1 billion by 2100.Much of that growth will come from Africa, where the population is growing at 2.3 percent a year—more than double Asia's 1 percent growth rate.If that rate stays consistent, which is not certain,Africa's population will reach 3.6 billion by 2100 from the present 1 billion.
Joel Cohen,a professor of population studies at Rockefeller University and Columbia University in New York, said universal secondary education offered a way to reduce population in high birth rate regions. In addition to providing information about birth control,a secondary education teaches women to reduce their own fertility, improve the health of their children and allow them to move from a mindset of having many children in the hope that some will survive to improve the quality of each child's life,Cohen wrote in the journal Nature.

閱讀下面短文,簡要回答問題。
Baloney is a kind of sausage that many Americans eat often. The word also has another meaning in English. It is used to describe something—usually something someone says—that is false or wrong or foolish.
Baloney sausage comes from the name of the Italian city, Bologna. The city is famous for its sausage, a mixture of smoked, spiced meat from cows and pigs. But, boloney sausage does not taste the same as beef or pork alone.
Some language experts think this different taste is responsible for the birth of the expression baloney. Baloney is an idea or statement that is nothing like the truth...in the same way that baloney sausage tastes nothing like the meat that is used to make it.
Baloney is a word often used by politicians to describe the ideas of their opponents.
The expression has been used for years. Fifty years ago, a former governor of New York State, Alfred Smith, criticized some claims by President Franklin Roosevelt about the successes of the Roosevelt administration. Smith said, “No matter how thin you slice it, it is still baloney.”
A similar word has almost the same meaning as baloney. It even sounds almost the same. The word is blarney. It began in Ireland about 1600.
The lord of Blarney castle, near Cork, agreed to surrender the castle to British troops. But he kept making excuses for postponing the surrender. And, he made them sound like very good excuses, “this is just more of the same blarney.”
The Irish castle now is famous for its Blarney stone. Kissing the stone is thought to give a person special powers of speech. One who has kissed the Blarney stone, so the story goes, can speak words of praise so smoothly and sweetly that you believe them, even when you know they are false.
73.Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “baloney”.
74.According to Americans, what does baloney refer to? (回答詞數(shù)不超過8個(gè))
75.What do you know about the lord of Blarney castle, near Cork? (回答詞數(shù)不超過6個(gè))

I recently ran into a friend I hadn’t seen for a long while. Our conversation was lively and full of news from both sides. Before we parted she said,“You'll have to drop in sometime.” I immediately sensed that if I simply “dropped in’’ I would take my friend by surprise, and I would be discouraged by the image of her standing in her doorway, staring at me,and asking,“Oh,err …what brings you here?”
Whatever happened to the unannounced drop-in visit? When I was growing up in the 1960s, it seemed that people - mostly relatives, but also friends - were always popping in. My parents would put coffee on,and my mom would find something in the kitchen to serve along with it.Then the conversation would begin…The neighbor lady,a worrier, was unloading her sadness while my mom quietly listened. The Irish man next door had such an accent that I remember asking what language he spoke. My Polish relatives arrived in packs…But I never heard my parents say anything like “We weren’t expecting you’’ or “This isn’t a good time.”Drop-in visitors had a certain right of way and became No.1.
What happened to such visits? Actually I know the answer.Times have changed.Everybody gets busy with work. There is no longer a stay-at-home mom keeping a pot of hot coffee or tea ready throughout the day for a surprise guest.Exploding malls and stores are now replacing homes as a central form of entertainment.
Just the other day a former student of mine showed up.“I'm sorry for the surprise visit.”my student began.“I just wanted to see if you still lived here.I'll only stay a minute.”My response was immediate.“ No, you won’t,” I said.“Just come in, sit, have coffee, and we’ll talk.’’
I had nothing in the kitchen but we ordered pizza. And we had a lovely time.I have tried to keep the drop-in tradition alive though it takes some effort.

The Luck of the Irish
Look at a map of Britain, and the island on the left is Ireland. It’s a small but beautiful country with a long tradition of folk music. Up until 10 years ago just about the only thing that Ireland was famous for was its specialty black beer.
Now Ireland is famous around the world for its music with names like "Kenya","U2" ,"Van Morrison"and more recently "the Corers". "Boyzone",one of the world's top boy bands ,is from Ireland too. What's more,Boyzone member shane has twin sisters,Adele and Heavy, who are members of "B Witched"
The "Boyzone"story is interesting because they were created in 1993 by Dublin nightclub owner John Reynolds. They advertised in newspapers to find members for the group and 300wannabe pop stars applied!
Ronan, who was just 17 when he dropped out of school to make his bid for stardom, and shane, who had been working as trained mechanic in his father's garage when he left to join Boyzone, were both lucky enough to be chosen. The other members are shoe-shop attendant stephen lately, former mechanic Mike Graham and one-time clothes store assistant Keith Dully.
Many people expect bands that have been created by the music industry to produce boring music which doesn't become popular. Even the boys themselves knew they the would not easily achieve international pop music success.
Boyzone quickly proved that they were more than just pretty faces and have sold millions of records around the world. At the moment ,they are not big stars in America, but they say that will change, when they begin a tour of the United States.
Ronan will shortly also start recording as a solo artist. That does not mean the band will spilt yet,but we can expect Boyzone to split sometime in the next 18 months or so.Ronan has also recently become involved as one of the managers of new Irish boy band "West Life" whose song "Swear It Again"has recently been Number 1 in the British charts.
