I tend to accept any idea put forward by experts on TV. One day, a sociologist(社會(huì)學(xué)家) proposed that the   36  society has been consuming modern humans little by little. For fear that I would become a victim of the consumer society, I   37  hurried to a bicycle shop in my neighborhood.   38  the shopkeeper Mr. Johnson was selling me the bicycle, he said, “This is the best thing you   39  have done. Life has become hopelessly   40 . A bicycle is simple, and it brings to you   41  things: fresh air, sunshine and exercise.” I agreed. Happy as a child, I got on the bicycle and headed out onto the streets. After some time, I   42  at the other end of the town. I was   43  that this simple vehicle could let me   44  long distances in a fairly short time. But how   45  did I really go?
Since I hated to be   46 , I went back to Mr. Johnson and asked him to   47  an odometer (里程表) on my bicycle. He agreed, but   48 , “An odometer without a speedometer (速度計(jì)) is like a   49  without a knife.” I admitted he was right and in a few minutes, the two devices (裝置) were   50  to the handlebars of my bicycle. “What about a horn?” he then asked. “Look, this horn is no larger than a matchbox and has many   51 .” Attracted by these functions, I bought the horn.
“You can’t leave the back part   52 ,” noted Mr. Johnson. He fixed a metal box with buttons   53  the seat, and said, “Is there anything better than this oven(烤箱) when you feel   54  on your way? I can give you a special discount.” I was not strong enough to   55  the offer.
“I congratulate you once more; this is the best thing you could have done,” said Mr. Johnson in the end.

In early autumn I applied for admission to college. I wanted to go nowhere but to Cornell University, but my mother fought strongly against it. When she saw me studying a photograph of my father on the sports ground of Cornell, she tore it up.
“You can’t say it’s not a great university, just because Papa went there.”
“That’s not it at all. And it is a top university.” She was still holding the pieces in her hand. “But we can’t afford to send you to college.”
“I wouldn’t dream of asking you for money. Do you want me to get a job to help support you and Papa? Things aren’t that bad, are they?”
“No,” she said. “I don’t expect you to help support us.”
Father borrowed money form his rich cousins to start a small jewellery shop, His chief customers were his old college friends. To get new customers, my mother had to help. She picked up a long-forgotten membership in the local league of women, so that she could get to know more people. Whether those people would turn into customers was another question. I knew that my Parents had to wait for quite a long time before their small investment (投資) could show returns. What’s more, they had not wanted enough to be rich and successful ;Otherwise they could not possibly have managed their lives so badly.
I was torn between the desire to help them and change their lives, and the determination not to repeat their mistakes. I had a strong belief in my power to go what I wanted. After months of hard study I won a full college scholarship(獎(jiǎng)學(xué)金).My father could hardly contain his pride in me, and my mother eventually gave in before my success.

A new study suggests that the roundtheclock availability that cell phones have brought to people's lives may take a toll on family life. The study, which followed more than 1,300 adults over 2 years, found that those who consistently used a mobile phone throughout the study period were more likely to report negative “spillover” between work and home life—and,in turn, less satisfaction with their family life.
Spillover essentially(本質(zhì)上)means that the line between work and home begins to become unclear. Work life may invade home life when a parent is taking jobrelated calls at home, for instance—or family issues may start to take up work time. For example,a child may call mum at work, telling her “microwave exploded”,explained Noelle Chesley,an assistant professor of sociology at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee and the author of the study. The problem with cell phones seems to be that they are allowing for even more spillover between work and home.
This may be especially true for working women, the study found. Among men, consistent use of mobile phones seemed to allow more work issues to creep (潛入)into family time. But for women, the spillover tended to go in both directions. Being “connected” meant that work cut into home time, and family issues came into work life.
Cell phones seem to be opening more lines for stressful exchanges among family members. But there may be ways to control the spillover, according to Chesley. Employers, she said, could look at their policies on contacting employees after hours to make sure their expectations are “reasonable”.For their part, employees could decide that cell phones go off during family time, Chesley said.
