Norm Pethrick, a 36-year-old man in Australia’s northern city Darwin, was praised(表揚) on Thursday for jumping onto a crocodile’s (鱷魚)back to save his wife Wendy at Litchfield National Park, a popular tourist spot southwest of Darwin, a local newspaper reported.
Ms Pethrick was standing on a river bank Wednesday afternoon when the saltwater crocodile lunged (撲), locking its mouth on both her legs as it tried to drag her underwater.
Norm Pethrick, who with his wife had been collecting water, immediately went to help her. He jumped onto the back, poked (戳) the eyes of the crocodile and finally got his wife free.
Ms Pethrick was later taken to Royal Darwin Hospital for a medical treatment. The doctors said she was suffering eight puncture wounds (傷口) in her right leg, a puncture wound in her left leg and a serious cut to one of her fingers.

Some scientists say that animals in the ocean are increasingly threatened(威脅) by noise pollution caused by human beings. The noise that affects(影響)sea animals comes from a number of human activities. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels(分貝) measured in water are different from those measured(測量)on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land caused pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.
Some scientists have planned to set a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have found that noises at that level can frighten and confuse(混淆) whales.
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that loud noises can seriously hurt some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales’ ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected.
Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds disagree to a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial(工業(yè)的)and scientific research. Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect(懷疑) that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to stop noises from harming creatures in the ocean.
1.According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea animals?
A. The man-made noises. B. The noises made by themselves.
C. The sound of earthquakes. D. The sound of the ice-breaking.
2.Which of the following is discussed in the second paragraph(段落)?
A. Different places with different types of noises.
B. The human ears have feelings to all types of noises.
C. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.
D. The ocean animal’s reaction to noises.
3. As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. They are deaf because of noises.
B. Noises at a certain level may hurt them.
C. They are easily confused by noises.
D. Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.
4. We can know from the passage that many scientists think that the noise limit(限制) of one hundred twenty decibels would __________.
A. stop them from doing their research work
B. benefit them a lot in their research work
C. do good to their health
D. increase the industrial output(產(chǎn)量)
5.According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?
A. They will try their best to make no noise.
B. They will work hard to cut down natural noises.
C. They will study the effect of different noises.
D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.

Try reading the following sentences as fast as you can. “She sells seashells by the seashore. The shells she sells are surely seashells. So if she sells shells on the seashore, I’m sure she sells seashore shells.”
Not very easy, was it? What you’ve just read is called a tongue twister (繞口令). It is an exercise made up of sounds that are hard to pronounce in order to help people pronounce words faster and more correctly. Try the next example.
“Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Did Peter Piper pick a peck of pickled peppers? If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?”
Tongue twisters usually do not have much meaning. They are just designed to improve people’s ability to pronounce words. Although they may be very difficult, these exercises are very important to people who are trying to speak English correctly. This is because tongue twisters help people to tell the differences between similar sounds.
So if you wish to pronounce words more smoothly(順利地,流利地), you’d better try picking out some tongue twisters and practising them.
1. Tongue twisters are helpful in improving ______ skills.
A. listeningB. writing
C. pronunciationD. communication
2.The first tongue twister is hard because ______.
A. it is very boringto read
B. it teaches us a lot of knowledge
C. we don’t know who “she” is
D. the sounds of “s” and “sh” are similar
3. The passage is probably taken from ______ in a school newspaper.
A. Story TimeB. Study Garden
C. Latest NewsD. Lost and Found

Imagine a world where air pollution is no longer a problem. Clean air is all around us. People don’t have to worry about polluting the air every time they drive their cars. They no longer need to face the problem of not having enough fuel(燃料)either.
Although scientists have been trying for many years to develop a new kind of car that does not need gasoline (汽油), they have been unsuccessful. Recently, however, car engineers have succeeded in creating a new kind of car that runs on gasoline and electricity(電). This is the famous “hybrid car”. This car gets its name from the fact that it has a gasoline engine (引擎) and an electric motor inside. Hybrid cars do not pollute the environment as much as the cars that are commonly used today. They also cost drivers less money because they need less fuel than ordinary cars.
Hybrid cars are becoming widely popular in the United States. They are soon expected to become widely used around the world. If scientists and engineers continue to work on car development, perhaps the world with clean air that we imagined earlier just might become real in the future.
1. The underlined word “they” in Paragraph (段落) 2 means ______.
A. carsB. drivers
C. engines D. scientists
2.Hybrid cars ______.
A. increase air pollution B. run only on electricity
C. have no engines insideD. need less fuel than ordinary cars
3. The passage tells us that with the development of cars, we may ______.
A. like electric cars B. drive cars easily
C. live in the world with clean airD. understand how hybrid cars work
4.The best title for the passage would be ______.
A. The Car of the FutureB. The Meaning of Hybrid
C. The Use of Hybrid CarsD. The Invention of the Car
