To many students, joining social media (社交媒體) “circles” is now more important than making new friends in real life.
And it’s easy. If you have a cell phone, you can download apps (應(yīng)用程序) such as Sina Weibo, WeChat (微信) and QQ.
“I love to check my friends’ updates (更新). I also enjoy news and humor shared on social media,” Said Ou Wei, 14, from Hongling Middle School in Shenzhen. Every year thousands of people get hurt or die when they are crossing the road. Most of these people are old people and children. They forgot to look and listen before they cross the road.
How can we lessen (減少) traffic accidents? All of us must obey the traffic rules. For the drivers, they shouldn’t drive too fast. If they drive too fast, it will be very difficult to stop the cars in a very short time. For the pedestrians (行人), it’s very important to be careful when they are walking on the road. Therefore, when we walk across the road, we must try to walk along the pavements(人行道). We must stop and look both ways before crossing the road. Look left first, next look right, then look left again. Only when we are sure that the road is clear, we can cross it. The right way to cross the road is to walk quickly. It’s not safe to run. A 14-year-old British student is packing for the next day of school: textbooks, notebooks, pens, 250 grams of flour, an egg and some cooking oil. Wait, what? It’s not a joke.
From September, cookery will be a compulsory (必修的) course for kids aged 7-14 in the UK. Primary school students will learn how to put things together and make simple, healthy food. At high school, students will then master a number of different meals. They will also learn some cooking skills including baking.
Britain is sometimes known as a country with bad food and unhealthy eating habits. These new courses are part of the country’s effort to bring healthy food back onto the table.
“One in four British families no longer has a table that everyone can eat around. One out of every two meals we eat is eaten alone. Only four out of ten of us enjoy eating meals with our children,” British writer Joanna Blythman wrote in her book Bad Food Britain: How A Nation Ruined Its Appetite in 2006. Instead, ready meals have become the first choice for many British kids, because their parents are often too busy to cook a proper meal.
“It’s important that children can develop an interest and understanding of good food,” said a spokesman of the Department for Education. “We want to encourage them to develop a love of food and cooking that will stay with them as they grow up.
【小題1】What are high school students in UK supposed to learn about cookery?

Hip hop or rap (說唱) music started on the street and in the clubs of the New York City in the 1970s. People rap to express how they feel about their lives and problems.
Rapping in class.
Would you like to rap in class? Well, actually hip pop music is played in more than 10,000 schools in the USA. Why? There is a new school program called “Flocabulary” in which teachers use texts and hip hop CDs to help teach different school subjects. The words of the songs are just what students are studying. This makes learning easy and fun. Students and teachers are excited about the good results it has had on exam marks. Mr. Lee, a teacher in a high school, said, “I’ve used hip hop songs in class, and I have never seen my students so crazy about history! You can’t imagine how well they remember what I teach! We even try to write our own songs.”
Whose idea was Flocabulary?
Blake Harrison, a high school student, was the first person to come up with the idea of Flocabulary. The word “Flocabulary” comes from the word “flow” and “vocabulary”. “Flow” is a rap word for “style”, or the way a rapper says the words of a song. “Vocabulary” means the words you have to learn in a language. How did he get the idea? Well, he realized he could remember the words of a hip hop song very easily. So, why not make lessons into songs? Today together with Alex Rappaport, a song writer, Blake produces hip hop songs for math, science and literature (文學(xué)). They are now used in schools with great success.

If we want to deal with the association(社交) between boys and girls properly, here are some “dos and don’ts” for you to follow.
Keep a normal and healthy state of mind. Our schools and classes are made up of boys and girls. It is very nature for the boys and girls to make friends with each other. We should make as many friends as possible. We should keep touch with the other sex(性別) in public instead of in secret.
Don’t be too nervous or too shy. If you are a shy person, you can also find a way out. First of all, you can make friends with the students who have the same interest and hobby as you. As both of you have much in common, you may have much to talk about. If you keep doing like that, little by little, you will gladly find you are also as free to express yourself as others.
Don’t fall into the ditch of early love. The boys and girls at a adolescence (青春期) are rich in feeling. They are easy to regard the friendship as a sign of love and fall in love with each other at an early age. In my opinion, early love is a green apple that can’t be eaten. An apple won’t taste sweet until it is full ripe. Boys and girls at middle school are too young to carry the heavy duty of love. Do keep out of early love.
【小題1】We should keep touch with the other sex in following ways EXCEPT _______.
| A.with a good state of mind | B.in real friendship |
| C.in public | D.in secret |
| A.波浪 | B.泥潭 | C.圈套 | D.迷惑 |
| A.tell students to keep away from early love |
| B.tell students how to make friends |
| C.teach boys how to talk with girls |
| D.give some advice on how to associate between boys and girls |
