In the 13th century
(世紀(jì)),the famous Italian traveller, Marco Polo, travelled a long way to China. During he stay in China, he saw many wonderful things. One of the things he discovered was that the Chinese used paper money. In western countries, people did not use paper money until the 15th century. However, people in China began to use paper money in the 7th century.![]()
A Chinese man called Cai Lun invented paper almost 2 000 years ago. He made it from wood. He took the wood from trees and made it into paper. He then put these pieces of paper together and made them into a book.
Now paper still comes from trees. We use a lot of paper every day. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth. If there are no trees, there will be no paper. Every day, people throw away about 2 800 tons
(噸)of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting nearly 48 000 trees every day. Since it takes more than 10 years a tree to grow, we must start using less paper now. If we don't, we will not have enough time to grow more trees to take the place of those we use for paper.![]()
So how can we save paper? We can use both sides of every piece of paper, especially when we are making notes. We can choose drinks in bottles instead of those in paper packets. We can also use cotton handkerchiefs
(手帕)and not paper ones. When we go shopping, we can use fewer paper bags. If the shop assistant does give us a paper bag, we can save it and reuse it later.Everyone can help to save paper. If we all think carefully, we can help protect trees. But we should do it now, before it is too late.

Today people can use the phone to talk with the others almost anywhere on the earth. But when you use the phone, you don't see the person you are talking with. That may change in the near future. Today some people are using a kind of telephone called the picture phone or vision phone: With it, two people who are talking can see each other.
Picture phones can be useful when you have something to show the person you're calling. They may have other uses in the future. One day you may be able to ring up a library and ask to see a book.
Then you'll be able to read the book right over your picture phone. Or you may be able to go shopping through your picture phone. If you see something in the newspaper that you think you want to buy, you'll go to your phone and call the shop. People at the shop will show you the thing you're interested in right over the phone. Dear John,
Your letter reached me the day before yesterday. I'm glad that you enjoyed your holidays with us. We enjoyed having you and your sister here. We hope that you will be able to come again next year. Maybe you will be able to stay longer next time.
A week isn't really long enough, is it? If your school has five weeks' holidays next year, perhaps you will be able to stay with us for two or three weeks.
We have been back at school for three weeks. It feels like three months. Now you are in Grade 3. I think you are both working very hard. I shall have to work harder next year when I'm in Grade 3. Tom and Ann won't be in Grade 3 until 2006.
They went for a picnic yesterday, but I didn't go with them because I had my foot hurt, and I couldn't walk very well.
They went to an island Called Quiet Island. It is near Sunshine Island. Do you remember Sunshine Island?
Tom, Ann and I send our best wishes to Betty and you. We hope to see you soon.
