In the United States, it is not usual to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone him early in the morning, while he is shaving(刮胡子)or having breakfast, the time of the call shows that the matter is very important and needs immediate(立刻的)attention. The same meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 1100 p. m. If someone receives a call during sleeping hours, he thinks it's a matter of life and death. The time chosen for the call passes on importance(重要性).

In social life, time plays a very important part. In the USA guests will feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to dinner party is given only three or four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. Dear Peter,

I've been here in Beijing for half a year now. Beijing is in the north of China, so it's quite cold in winter. It has just snowed twice here.

I'm going to have the firstWhite Christmasin my life ! It's hard to believe. Isn't it so warm in Australia and so cold here?

Thank you for the wonderful stamps! I've collected over 300 Chinese stamps since I came here. I'm sending some Monkey King stamps to you. I think you will like them.

Now to answer some of your questions. Yes, I'm learning Chinese. Chinese is quite a difficult language for me. Last time Mum asked for some quilts(被子)in a shop. They showed her some cups. Dad and I had a good laugh over that. I've learned about 500 Chinese words. I can even write a little Chinese now. Have you looked at the words on the Christmas card? I wrote them myself!

No, I'm not swimming. Instead, I'm learning to skate on real ice! I've had so many falls that I'm black and blue all over. But I'm learning fast.

I've traveled to several places in south China with Mum and Dad since we came to China. I've seen a lot of interesting things. I've made quite a few good friends, too.

If you go into the forest with friends who are older than you are, stay with them. If you don't, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do.

Sit down and stay where you are. Don't try to find your friend--let them find you. You can help them to find you by staying in one place.

There is another way you can help your friends or other people to find you. Give them a signal(信號)by shouting three times. Stop. Then shout three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help.

Keep up the shouting, always three times together. Then the people who hear you will know that you are not just making noise for fun(開玩笑). They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give two shouts. When a signal is given twice it is answer to a call for help.

If you don't think you will be found before nights comes, get some branches(樹枝). Try to put them together so that they make a little house. Cover up the holes with branches that have lots of leaves. Make yourself a soft bed with leaves and grass.
