　　In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece．Since then many countries have successfully held the Olympics, such as England, France, Germany, Canada, the USA, Spain, and Australia．After more than a century the Games returned to its hometown．

　　When people hold the Olympic Games, they always make an emblem(會(huì)徽)．The emblem of the Athens Olympic Games was a white circle of olive branches in the sky．

　　Now Athens is developing a spirit of peace．An officer said, “While in Athens, the world should be at peace．We hope the peace is not just for a short time．We would like the message from the Athens Game to help countries come together and solve their problems．”

　　Several years later, the Olympic Games will be held in China．And China already made a seal as the emblem of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games．The emblem has a single Chinese Character on a red seal and means “Chinese seal－dancing Beijing．” Below it, there are the words “Beijing 2008”．The character in the emblem “jing” means “capital” of China, and it is also like a runner or a dancer．The running figure (人形)of the emblem shows the spirit of the Olympics——faster, higher and stronger．

　　In the United States, headmasters and teachers discipline(懲罰)students in several ways．The teacher often writes to or calls the students’ parents．Sometimes students have to stay at school for one hour．If a student behaves(表現(xiàn))very badly, the headmaster can stop the student having classes．The student can’t come to school for one, two or three days．Mr．Lazares, the headmaster of a middle school in Ohio, did not like to do so．When he didn’t let the students come to school, they were happy．“A three-day holiday!”they thought．

　　One day, a boy was in Mr．Lazares’s office．The boy was not behaving well in class．Mr．Lazares telephoned the boy’s parents．“If you come to school with your son, I won’t stop him having classes,”he said．The boy’s father came to school and went with his son to every class．Other students looked at the boy and his father．The boy was embarrassed．After that he behaved better．And, of course, other students behaved better, too．

　　Now headmasters all over the USA are trying Mr．Lazares’s idea．They, too, think that students behave better when parents come to school．

　　Project Hope(希望工程)，a national charity(慈善機(jī)構(gòu))that helps young children who have left school in poor areas(地區(qū))return to school, is now changing its focus(中心，工作重心)from villages to cities．Because more children of laid-off workers(下崗職工)have had to give up their studies．

　　Anshan city in northeast China’s Liaoning Province has successfully started the project．They helped the children of local(地方的)laid-off workers．

　　Project Hope in Anshan has built 73 primary schools and 50 libraries and has helped over 6,500 children return to school with donation(捐贈(zèng))of more focus on school-age children(學(xué)齡兒童)of laid-off workers．Those children are forced(被迫)to leave school because their parents have not enough money．The project will help the children return to school and let their parents pay full attention to(全身心的)finding new jobs．

　　Project Hope was stated in 1990 by the China Youth Development Fund(中國(guó)青少年發(fā)展基金會(huì))．It has received over 1.78 billion yuan(about ＄214 million)in donations and sent 2.29 million children back to school more than the past ten years．
