Modern life is impossible without traveling. The fastest way of traveling is by plane. With a modern airliner you can travel in one day to places, which took a month or more to get to a hundred years ago.

Traveling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages. You can see the country you are traveling through. Modern trains have comfortable seats and dining cars. They make even the longest journey enjoyable.

Some people prefer to travel by sea when possible. There are large liners and riverboats. You can visit many other countries and different parts of your country on them. Ships are not so fast as trains or planes, but traveling by sea is a very pleasant way to spend a holiday.

Many people like to travel by car. You can make your own timetable. You can travel three or four hundred miles or only fifty or one hundred miles a day, just as you like. More than 50,000,000 people live in the rainforests of the world and most of them do not hurt the forest they live in. They eat the fruits that grow on the forest trees, but they do not cut them down. They kill some animals to eat, but they do not destroy them.

When we cut down the rainforests, we destroy these forest people, too. In 1900, there were 1,000,000 forest people in the Amazon forest. In 1980, there were only 200,000.

The Yanomamo live along the river of the rainforest in the north of Brazil. They have lived in the rainforest for about 10,000 years and they use more than 2,000 different plants for food and for medicine. But in 1988, someone found gold in their forest, and suddenly 45,000 people came to the forest and began looking for gold. They cut down the forest to make roads. They made more than a hundred airports. The Yanomamo people lost land and food. Many died because new diseases came to the forest with the strangers.

Many forest people try to save their forests. Chico Mendes was famous in Brazil because he wanted to keep the forest for his people. “I want the Amazon forest to help all of us-forest people, Brazil and all the Earth,” he said. A few months later in December 1988, people who wanted to cut down the forest killed Chico Mendes.

In Borneo, people were cutting down the forest of the Penan people to sell the wood. The Penan people tried to save their rainforest. They made blockades across the roads into the forest. In 1987, they closed fifteen roads for eight months. No one cut down any trees during that time.

In Panama, the Kuna people saved their forest. They made a forest park, which tourists pay to visit.

The Gavioes people of Brazil use the forest, but they protect it as well. They find and sell the Brazil nuts, which grow on the forest trees.

Dreams may be more important than sleep. Some people don't need much sleep. But we all need to dream, scientists say.

Dreams take up about one quarter of our sleeping time. People have several dreams each night. Dreams are like short films. They are usually in color. Some dreams are like old films. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something. Dreaming may be a way of trying to find an answer.

Some people get new ideas about their work from dreams. They could have been thinking about their work all day. These thoughts can carry over into dreams.

Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can't remember the dream. Dreams can disappear quickly from memory.

Watching some children trying to catch butterflies one August afternoon, I was reminded of an incident in my own childhood. When I was a boy of twelve in South Carolina, something happened to me that made me never put any wild creature (living thing) in a cage.

We lived on the edge of a forest, and every evening at dusk the mocking birds would come and rest in the trees and sing. There isn't a musical instrument made by man that can produce a more beautiful sound than the song of the mockingbird.

I decided that I would catch a young bird and keep it in a cage and in that way I would have my own private musician.

I finally succeeded in catching one and put it in a cage. At first, being scared, the bird fluttered(撲騰) about the cage, but finally it settled down in its new home. I felt very pleased with myself and looked forward to some beautiful singing from my little musician.

On the second day of the bird's captivity. my new pet's mother flew to the cage with food in her mouth. The baby bird ate everything she brought to it. I was pleased to see this. Certainly the mother knew better than I how to feed her baby.

The following morning when I went to see how my captive(caged) bird was doing, I discovered it on the floor of the cage, dead. I was terribly surprised! What had happened! I had taken extremely care of my little bird, or so I thought.

Arthur Wayne, the famous ornithologist, who happened to be visiting my father at the time, hearing me crying over the death of my bird, explained what had happened. “A mother mockingbird, finding her young in a cage, will sometimes bring it poison-berries(毒莓). She thinks it better for her young to die than to live in captivity.”

Never since then have I caught any living creature and put it in a cage. All living creatures have a right to live free.

1.Why did the writer catch a mockingbird when he was a boy of twelve?

[ ]

A.He liked living creatures.

B.He enjoyed watching beautiful birds.

C.He needed a pet as a friend.

D.He wanted the bird to sing for him.

B.the bird's mother gave it the poisonous food.

C.the writer didn't know how to feed the bird at first.

D.his father' s friend didn't tell him the way of birds' life.

3.An ornithologist probably is a person who ________.

[ ]

A.studies birds
B.loves creatures
C.majors in habits
D.takes care of trees

4.From his past experience, the writer probably suggests that ________.

[ ]

A.no one can miss the chance to say sorry.

B.a(chǎn)ll living creatures can make free choices.

C.everything can be less worthy than any lives.

The head of an ant is triangular with two large eyes and sometime three more very small eyes. These eyes have many parts, so the ant can see everything that moves around it. Some of these eyes see things near it, while others can see things far off in the distance.
