In England, many children go to nursery school from the age of about three, but these schools are not compulsory. Compulsory education begins at the age of five, when children go to primary school. Primary education takes six years, then pupils go to secondary school. After six years of secondary education, pupils take the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) examination. Most pupils take about eight subjects in this exam.
Compulsory education ends at sixteen. Some people choose to stay at secondary school for a further two years and then take the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (A-level) examination. Students can take three or four subjects in this exam. Other people leave school at sixteen and go to colleges for further education.
Education in England has had many changes in the last ten years. Another new change took place in September 2000, in 6th Forms where students will have study four or five subjects at S-level for their first year and then choose 3 in their second year to study at A-level (S-level is not as difficult as A-level).

The customs(習(xí)慣) in different countries are rather different. If I have dinner with a Chinese host(主人), he always puts more food onto my plate as soon as I have eaten it up. That often discomforts(使……不安) me greatly. I have to eat the food even if I do not want to. Because it is bad manners in the West to leave one's food on the plate. I have also found that when a Chinese sits at an American's dinner, he hardly asks for food or drink though he's still hungry or thirsty.
This might be good manners in China but not in the West at all. In the United States, it is not polite to keep asking someone again and again to accept(接受) something. If Americans want something, they will ask for it. If not, they will say, “No, thanks.” When an American is served with beer by the host, for example, he might say, “No, thanks. I'll take some orange juice if you don't mind.” That is what an American will do. So when you go to the United States, you'd better remember the famous saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
1.The customs in the USA are the same as those in ________.
[ ]
2.Maybe ________ usually leaves food on the plate after dinner.
[ ]
3.A Chinese often doesn't ask for food or drink at dinner because ________.
[ ]
A.he isn't hungry or thirsty
B.he's afraid the host doesn't agree
C.he thinks it is not polite to do that
D.he is full
4.Which of the following is right?
[ ]
A.An American won't accept something until he is asked to again and again.
B.An American eats the food whether he likes it or not at dinner.
C.At dinner a Chinese host often asks his guests to eat more.
D.It is not polite to ask for food at dinner in the USA.
5.“When in Rome, do as the Romans do” means ________.
[ ]
A.When one is in another country, one should keep one's customs.
B.When you live in other countries, you should keep their customs.
C.When you are in Rome, you should love Romans.
D.When one is in Rome, one should do as Americans do.

The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means(通訊設(shè)備). Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution(污染). To pollute means to make things dirty. Pollution comes from many ways. We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it.
Man has been polluting the earth. The more people, the more pollution. Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to another place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world.
Air pollution is still the most serious. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution. Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
Many countries are making rules(法規(guī)) to fight against pollution. They stop people from burning coal(煤) in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO2 is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused(引起) by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. That means keeping the land, water and air clean. And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.
1.________, our world is becoming much smaller.
[ ]
A.Because of the rise in pollution
B.Thanks to science development(發(fā)展)
C.Because the earth is being polluted day and night
D.Because the earth is blown away by the wind every year
2.Hundreds of years ago, life was ________ it is today.
[ ]
3.Pollution comes in many ways. We can even hear it. Here “it” means ________.
[ ]
4.Air pollution is the most serious kind of pollution because ________.
[ ]
A.it makes much noise
B.it makes us angry more easily
C.it makes our rivers and lakes dirty
D.it's had for all living things in the world
5.Which of the following is NOT true?
[ ]
A.Many countries are making rules to fight against pollution.
B.The pollution of the earth grows as fast as the world population does.
C.The problem of pollution is not so serious because there are not so many people living on the earth.
D.If people could go to work by bus or bike instead of car or motorbike, it would be helpful in fighting against the problem of SO2.
