In the last 500 years, nothing about people-not their clothes, ideas, or languages-h(huán)as changed as much as what they eat. The original(最初的) chocolate drink was made from the seeds of a certain kind of tree by South American Indians. The Spanish introduced it to the rest of the World during the 1500's, and although it was very expensive, it quickly became popular. In London, shops where chocolate drinks were served became important meeting places. Some still exist today.
The potato is also from the New World. Around 1600, the Spanish brought it from Peru to Europe, where it soon was widely grown. Ireland became so dependent on it that thousands of Irish people died from hunger when the crop failed during the “Potato Famine” of 1845-6.
There are many other foods that have traveled from South America to the Old World. But some others went in the opposite direction. Brazil(巴西) is now the world's largest grower of coffee, and coffee is an important crop in many other countries of South America. But it is native to Ethiopia. It was first made into a drink by Arabs during the 1400's.

There is a lake near a forest in Sweden. The water in the lake is very clear and everything is quiet and still. On the far side of the water is some farmland and further away, across the field, is an old church built on a hill. It is spring time and it has just stopped raining. The stream flowing into the lake is full and there is still some half-melted snow from last winter on the ground.
The reason why the water is so clear, and everything is so quiet and still, is that most of the plant and animal life in and around the lake is dead. There are no birds because all the fish and insects(昆蟲), which the birds need for food, have disappeared. Many trees in the forest are losing their leaves and bark, and are sick and dying. Others were blown down by the high winds of last winter. A farmer is working in a field planting wheat, but unless he plants a stronger kind of seed this year, the crop will be between 25 to 40 percent lower than a few years ago. The stone of the old church is turning to powder and unless the tower is repaired soon, it will fall down.
All the death and destruction in this place is due to(由于) pollution : pollution from smoke coming out of factory chimney and fumes(煙) coming out of the exhausts(排氣) of cars and trucks. And yet this silent lake is hundreds of kilometres away from the nearest factory and motor way.
1.In which country is the lake?
[ ]
2.What time of the year do you think it is?
[ ]
3.The lake is silent because ________.
[ ]
A.people seldom go there
B.people around the lake are dead
C.most of the plant and animal life in or around the lake is dead
D.it is winter time
4.Why are there no animals or birds in or around the lake?
[ ]
A.Because the weather is bad.
B.Because the lake is quiet.
C.Because there is pollution.
D.Because the people killed them.
5.The title for this passage would be ________.
[ ]
A.Nature and Pollution
B.The Silent Lake
C.Animals and Plants around the Lake
D.Stronger Seed Planted

Why don't birds get lost on their long flights from one place to another? Scientists have puzzled over this question for many years. Now they are beginning to fill in the blanks.
Not long ago, experiments showed that birds rely(依賴) on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. But what about birds that fly at night? Tests with artificial(人造的) stars have proved that certain night-flying birds are able to follow the stars on their long-distance flights.
A dove had spent its lifetime in a cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it showed an inborn ability to use the stars for guidance. The birds's cage was placed under an artificial starfilled sky. The bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by his outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the make-believe stars caused a change in the direction of his flight.
Scientists think that doves, when flying in daylight, use the sun for guidance. But the stars are obviously their principal(主要的) means of navigation(or flying). What do they do when the stars are hidden by clouds? Obviously, they find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coastlines, and river courses. But when it's too dark to see these, the doves circle helplessly, unable to get their bearings(方位).

A.a(chǎn) bird that has been caged will not fly long distances
B.some birds seem to follow the stars when they fly at night
C.a(chǎn) bird having spent its lifetime in a cage has to- be taught how to navigate

A.tried to fly in the same direction as birds not caged

Different from popular thoughts, colds are not caused by bad weather. Colds are caused by viruses(病毒) in the body, and you are better out on the snowy day than you are in a warm room, with your friends, who just may be passing the virus around. If you feel a chill(寒戰(zhàn)) when you are coming down with a cold, you are already sick. A chill is an early sign of the cold.
The virus can spread through air when a cold-sufferer(感冒患者) coughs or sneezes(打噴嚏). Surprisingly, this is not the most usual way of spreading. Many studies have now show that most colds are “caught” by hands. A cold-sufferer rubs her nose, so spreading the virus to her hand. Then a friend comes to visit her. They shake(握) their hands. The friend then gets something to eat by hand, and several days later she catches a cold. Although some parents pick up their children's tissues(紙巾) and carefully throw them away, they fail to wash their hands. They'll catch the colds, too.
Cold viruses can also be spread by objects, for example, telephones, plates. The cold-sufferer as well as other members of the house, by washing their hands often, will stop the viruses from spreading in a way.

Popular music in America is what every student likes. Students carry small radios with earphones and listen to music before class, after class, and at lunch. Students with cars buy large speakers and play the music loudly as they drive on the street.
Adult(成年的) drivers listen to music on the car radio as they drive to work. They also listen to the news about sports, the weather, and the life of American people. Most of the radio programmes are music.
Pop or popular music singers make much money. They make a CD or tape which radio stations use in many places. Once the popular singer is heard all over the country, young people buy his or her tape. Some of the money from these tapes goes to the singer. Wherever the singer goes, all the young people want to meet him or her. Now the singer has become a national(國家的) star.
There are other kinds of music that are important to Americans. One is called folk(民間) music. It tells stories about the common life of Americans. Another is called western or country music. What is a language for? Some people seem to think it's for practising grammar rules and learning words. That's wrong. A language is for the exchange of ideas. It's no good knowing all about a language if you can't use it.
Many students I have been taught to know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or freely. They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes. We native speakers make mistakes, too. And we break rules. Bernard Shaw once said, “Foreigners often speak English too correctly. “But the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They are English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What use to be wrong becomes right. The people not only make history, they also make a language. They can make their own language. They can't make another people's language.
So Chinese students of English should pay attention to the grammar, but they shouldn't over do it. They should put communication(交際) first.

B.we want to speak it correctly

Isn't it astonishing how much time we spend talking about food? “Have you ever eaten…?” “What did you have for lunch?” and so on. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day.
The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese don't like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish.
So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.
1.The topic people spend much time talking about is ________.

2.People often feel that what others eat is ________.
[ ]
3.According to this text, English people drink tea ________ times every day.
