Two months after beginning the new work hours, good results have been reported in Wenzhou. New work starts at 9 in the morning, an hour later than before. But people still go back at 6 in the afternoon.
“With one more hour's sleep every day, I feel much better,” said a worker there.
Now people still work as long as before, but not from 8:00 to 6:00. They go to work an hour later, but have a shorter lunch break. In the past they had two hours for lunch, but now they have only one hour.
Many people welcome the new work hours.“Why do we have to waste a lot of time in the middle of the day and rush in the early morning?”
Two months ago, many people got up at 6 : 30 a.m. every workday and left home at 7 : 30 a.m. It usually took them about an hour to get to the office from home. Morning time was always like a battle. People went to work in a hurry, feeling very tired.
Sleep is needed for good health. Doctors say that eight hours' sleep is good for people, but few people can sleep that long.
The use of the new work hours is just beginning. Although we Chinese have long kept“early hours”, it is important to follow hours in the world. Most foreign countries have“nine-to-five” work hours. I wonder if there is any girl or boy who does not like to see a rainbow (彩虹) in the sky. It is so beautiful.
There is a story, saying that whenever you see a rainbow you should run at once to the place where it touches the ground, and there you would find a pot of gold. Of course it is not true. Neither you could find the pot of gold, nor could you ever find its end. No matter how far you run, it always seems far away.
A rainbow is not a thing that we can feel with our hands as we can feel a flower. It is only the effect (結(jié)果) for light shining on raindrops. The raindrops catch the sunlight and break it up into all the wonderful colours which we see.
It is called a rainbow perhaps because it is made up of raindrops and looks like a bow (弓).
That is why we can never see a rainbow in a clear sky. We see rainbows only when there is rain in the air and the sun is shining brightly through the clouds. Every rainbow has many colours in the same order. The first or the top colour is always red, next comes orange, then green, and last of all blue. A rainbow is indeed one of the wonders of nature.

The earth is not the only body that travels around the sun. With it are eight other planets, fellow members of the sun' s family. Two of them are nearer while the other six are farther from the sun than the earth is. The farther they are, the longer trip they make around the sun. People noticed long ago that these traveling bodies moved around in the sky in certain paths.
We know that every little hit of matter in the universe pulls upon every other hit of matter. The pull between two bodies is proportional (成比例的) to the product (乘積) of their masses. Because the sun is so large, the pulls between the sun and planets are thus great. If it were not for these pulls, the planets would fly off into space. In the same way there is a pull between the earth and the moon, which keeps the moon traveling in its orbit (軌道) around our planet, the earth. The pull holds you to its surface, and pulls back the ball which you throw into the air. Of course the ball also pulls on the larger earth but the earth is so much larger that the pull is not noticed.
(1) The earth travels a larger circle around the sun than ________ .
[ ]
A. six of the other planets
B. two planets in the same family
C. most planets in the universe
D. the moon
(2) The planets move around the sun because of ________ .
[ ]
A. the gravity (引力) of the sun only
B. the pull of the planets on one another
C. the pull between the planets and the sun
D. the proportional gravity
(3)If objects (物體) didn't have gravity, ________ .
[ ]
A. the earth would not travel in the space
B. the moon would move away from the earth
C. the sun would not exist
D. the planets of the sun family form another family

What do Napoleon, Clinton and Wang Nan have in common? They are all left-handed. Today about 15% of the number of people are left-handed. But why are people left-handed? The answer is the way the brain works.
The brain has two halves-the right half and the left half. The right half controls the left side of the body, and the left controls the right side of the body. So right-handed people have strong left brain, and left-handed people have a strong right brain. The two halves of the brain are about the same size. But each side controls different things. The left side controls language, maths and logic(邏輯). When you remember new words, or when you put things in order, you use your left side. The right side of the brain controls your love of art, colour and music. It is also good at recognizing faces. This does not mean that all artists are left-handed and all accountants (會(huì)計(jì))are right-handed. Some right-handers have a strong right brain, and some left-handers have a strong left brain.

Australia is nearly as large as the United States, hut most of it is too dry for people to live in. Around this dry part are large sheep and cow farms. A few of them are as large as the smallest states in America. Often the nearest neighbors are several hundred kilometers away.
The two-way radio is very important to people who live on these great Australian farms. It works much like a telephone. A person can listen to someone else talk and then give an answer. For example, people on the large farms could talk to a doctor far away. They could tell the doctor about someone who was ill, and the doctor could let them know how to look after the sick person. As the large farms were so far from towns, the children could not go to school. Radio schools were started for them in some places. At a certain (某一) time each day, boys and girls turn on their radios and listen to teachers in cities far away.
Families on the large farms wanted to give news to their neighbors. The programme “Round Robin” talks by radio were started to keep families in touch with each other. When a group of children politely stop a conversation with you, saying:“We have to go to work now,” you're left feeling surprised and certainly uneasy. After all, this is the 1990s and the idea of children working is just unthinkable. That is, until you are told that they are all pupils of stage schools and that the work“they go off” is to go on the stage in a theater.
Stage schools often act as agencies (代理機(jī)構(gòu)) to supply children for stage and television work. More worthy of the name “stage school” are those few places where children attend full time, with training for the theatre and a general education.
A visit to such schools will leave you in no doubt that the children enjoy themselves. After all, what lively children wouldn't settle for spending only half the day doing ordinary school work, and acting, singing or dancing their way through the other half of the day?
Then of course there is time for the children to make a name and make a little money in some big shows. Some stage schools give their children too much professional work at such a young age. But the law is very tight on the amount they can do. Those under 13 are limited to 40 days in the year and those over 13 to 40 days.
The schools themselves admit that not all children will be successful in the profession for which they are being trained. So what happens to those who don't make it? While all the leading schools say they place great importance on children getting good study results, the facts seem to suggest this is not always the case.
(1) People would stop feeling uneasy when realizing that the children they're talking to ________ .
[ ]
A. attend stage school
B. are going to the theatre
C. have got some work to do
D. love singing and dancing

D. provide a general education and training

[ ]
A. ordinary school work
B. money-making performances
C. stage training at school
D. acting, singing, or dancing after class

[ ]
A. He thinks highly of that they have to offer.
B. He favors an early start in the training of performing arts.
C. He feels uncomfortable about children putting on night shows.
D. He doubts the standard of ordinary education they have reached.
