Business can be fun, a business can be run with love and it can do good. In business, as in life, I need to enjoy myself, to have a feeling of my family and to feel excited by something unusual. I have always wanted the people who work for“The Body Shop”to feel the same way.

Now this book sends these ideas out into the world, and makes them public. I'd like to think there are no limits(界限) to our“family”, no limits to what can be done. I find that an exciting thought. I hope you do, too.

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January 1942. He went to school in St. Albans -- a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge University where he studied cosmology. As he himself admits (承認(rèn)) , he didn't work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.

The idea of daylight saving time started with an American named Benjamin Franklin (1706~1790) .

He explained (解釋) how a lot of the money spent on candles used for light (this was before electricity) could be saved if everyone woke up earlier and went to bed earlier.

Even though Franklin's idea had a clear meaning, most people didn't want to get up earlier than they had to. Who would?

It was not until 1907 that an Englishman named William Willet came up with a way to “make”the sunset (日落) later. His idea was to turn clocks forward (向前) by 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, for a total (總計(jì)) of 80 minutes.

William' s idea was laughed at, at first. But when World War I started in 1914, many countries decided they had to save energy(能源)for the war.

Daylight saving time has other uses. The more time you spend outside playing, the less time you are spending in front of the computer or the TV. These things also use energy. Also, daylight saving time sometimes causes problems. For example, China used it in 1986--but stopped it in 1991. That was because the temperatures are quite different from North to South and time from East to West.

If the people from northwest part of China use daylight saving time, sometimes they have to get up to work when it is not very bright outside. That will cause some trouble for them. Still, most parts of the world do have daylight saving time, and most people look forward to the extra (額外的) hour of evening light.

(1)Why did Franklin give the idea of daylight saving time?

[ ]

A. To save the money.
B. To save time.
C. To wake up earlier.
D. To go to bed earlier.

(2) In what year was the idea of daylight saving time put in use?

[ ]

A. In 1907.
B. In 1914.
C. In 1986.
D. In 1991.

(3) If it is 6:00 now, which is Willet's idea time?

[ ]

A.5:40.
B. 6:20.
C. 6: 40.
D. 7: 20

(4) When daylight saving time is used ________.

[ ]

A. you can play outside

B. you have more time watching TV

C. you have more time spending in front of the computer

D. you can save energy

(5) Why is daylight saving time not used in China now?

[ ]

A. People wouldn't like to get up earlier.

B. The temperatures are quite different.

C. The country is large.

D. The time is quite different.

Meeting the English Family

Rosa and her classmates were in a street in West London. The sky was dark. This was Rosa's big day, her first day in England.

Rosa got out of a taxi. The driver carried a very heavy bag for her. They walked through the rain to the front door of a big Victorian house.

A small girl opened the door. She was four years old. Her brother stood behind her. He was only two years old. One minute later, a young woman came to the door.

“Welcome to Wembley!” she said and she offered Rosa her hand.  “These are my two children, Elisabeth and Isaac” “Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Frost! said Rosa with a strong Spanish accent.

The two children ran back into the living room.

“Don't worry about them! They're a little shy. And please call me Diana! Now let me show you your room and then we can have a nice cup of tea. Or would you like some coffee?”

“I'd like to try a cup of English tea, made in England.”

“This is your bedroom. There's a nice view (視野) of the football stadium (露天體育場(chǎng)) and here's a little desk where you can study. The bathroom and toilet are just opposite your door. Now I'll go and put the kettle on.”

  “Excuse me. What's a kettle?”

“In England, we use a kettle to make hot water, we can then put the hot water in a teapot or use it to make coffee.”

Rosa was happy with her new home, but she was a little puzzled (困惑的). Perhaps her mother Maruja was right. The British were not normal people. They did not kiss when they met and they lived in large Victorian palaces. Their favourite drink was tea and they used strange metal kettles to make the water hot. “If you want to see a thing well, reach out(伸出手)and touch it!”

That may seem a strange thing to say. But touching things can help you to see them better.

Your eyes can tell you that a glass ball is round. But by holding it in your hands, you can feel how smooth(平滑的)and cool the ball is. You can feel how heavy the glass ball is.

When you feel all these about the ball, you really see it.

With your skin, you can feel better. For example, your fingers can tell the difference between two coins in your pocket. You can feel a little drop of water on the back of your hand, too.

You can even feel sounds against your skin. Have you ever wanted to know why some people like very loud music? They must like the sounds of music.

All children soon learn what “Don't touch!” means. They hear it often. Yet most of us keep on touching things as we grow up. In shops, we often touch things we might buy: shoes, clothes, glasses, etc, before we buy them. To see something well, we have to touch it.

The bottoms of your feet can feel things, too. You know this when you walk on warm sand, cool grass or a hard floor. All feel different under your feet.

There are ways of learning to see well by feeling. One way is to close your eyes and try to feel everything that is touching your skin. Feel the shoes on your feet, the clothes on your body, the air on your skin.

Most museums are just for looking. But today some museums have some things to touch. Their signs say, “Do touch!” There you can feel everything on show.

If you want to see better, reach out and touch. Then you will really see!

C. you can know things better
