Topic: What do dreams mean?
Many people think dreams are full of messages that may not be clear to us common people. But if we think about what is going on in our lives, we can usually come up with an answer. Let’s look at some of the most common dreams. What do these dreams mean?
Falling
You’re falling, falling, falling… and then you wake up. This dream is said to mean you are afraid of something or worried about something. There may be something in your life that is out of control and there is nothing you can do to stop it. Another explanation is that you may fail in something. Maybe you’re not doing well in school or work.
Taking an exam (or forgetting that you have one)
You suddenly realize you have to take an exam at that very moment. You might be running here and there to find your classroom. Experts say this dream may mean you’re being tested about something or maybe you are facing a challenge(挑戰(zhàn)).
Flying
| Descriptions of dreams | ___56 _ to dreams |
| Falling | You have something to fear or 57 _ about. You 58 _ in something like schooling or work. |
| Taking an exam (or forgetting that you have one) | You’re being tested about something or facing something 59 _. |
| Flying | You’re able to control 60 _matters to you. You 61 _in yourself and think you can beat anyone and anything. |
| Trying to run, but going 62 _ | You’re trying to do too many things at a 63 _, which prevents you from 64 _forward. |
| Conclusion: We can come up with some 65 _ about some dreams, but not all the dreams. | |
Dreaming that you are flying means you are on top of things. You are in control of the things that matter to you. It may also mean you have confidence in yourself and think no one and nothing can beat you.
Trying to run, but going nowhere
You’re trying to run, but either your legs won’t move or you simply aren’t going anywhere. Some experts think this dream means you’re trying to do too many things at once and can’t catch up or move forward.
In fact, unlike these dreams, there are also many strange dreams that experts may not be able to explain.

Every country has its heroes. The heroes are the people the nation and especially the young people admire. If you get a list of the heroes of a nation, it will tell you the poten?tial (潛力) of that nation.
Today in America, if you ask the high school students to list their heroes, their choice would probably fall into three groups. The first group of heroes would be the rock stars ?the people connected with rock music. There is no doubt that such people do have talent (天才) but one wonders if one should hold up rock stars as a model. The rock stars too of?ten are mixed with drugs and their personal life is not all that good. The rock stars are rich and wear the latest fashion styles. However, one should seek (尋覓)more in a hero than such things as money and good clothes.
A second type of hero for the American youth is the sports star. Again you have a person who has a great ability in one area---sports. However, too often the personal life of the sports star is a bit of a disorder (混亂). Too frequently (頻繁)drugs and drinking are a part of life of the sports star.
A third type of hero is the TV or movie star. This person may have lots of acting tal?ent and is quite handsome. However, the personal life of too many actors is quite sad and they should not be held up as a model of young people. Today, the rock star, the athlete, and the actor all have become the models of the youth in America. Really, do you hear a young person say that his hero is a doctor, a teacher, or a scientist? These people are not rich and do not wear fashionable clothes. However, they are talented people who work hard to make the world a better place for everyone.
What is really sad is that the young try to imitate their heroes. They like to wear the same clothes and follow their styles. If the heroes of today for the American young people are limited only to rock stars, athletes and actors, the future does not look too bright. ?
( )42. From the passage, we know that the heroes the American youth admire are those _________.
A. who are not bright but are good -looking.
B. who are rich but are strict with themselves.
C. who are talented in some area but lead an improper life.
D. who are perfect in all areas
( )43. It can be inferred (推斷) that the American young people will not admire
A. a university professor B. a poplar singer
C. a football player D. a film actress
( )44. According to the writer, people should admire those _________.
A. who are rich and wear the latest fashion clothes
B. who can express people’s feelings
C. whose personal life is good
D. who work in the interests of the people
( )45. What does the underlined word “imitate” mean in Chinese in the passage?
A. 喜愛 B. 模仿 C.崇拜 D. 迷戀

Dogs are known for their sense of smell. They can find missing people and things like bombs and illegal drugs. Now a study suggests that the animal known as man’s best friend can even find bladder (膀胱) cancer.
Cancer cells (細胞) are thought to produce chemicals with unusual smells. Researchers think dogs have the ability to smell these smells, even in very small amounts, in urine (尿). The sense of smell in dogs is thousands of times better than in humans.
The study follows reports of cases where, for example, a dog showed great interest in a growth on the leg of its owner. The man was later found to be skin cancer.
Carolyn Willis led a team of researchers at Amersham Hospital in England. They trained different kinds of dogs for the experiment. The study involved urine collected from bladder cancer patients, from people with other diseases and from healthy people.
Each dog was tested 8 times. In each test there were 7 samples for the dogs to smell. The dog should signal the one from a bladder cancer patient by lying down next to it. Two cocker dogs were correct 56 percent of the time. But the scientists reported an average success rate of 41 percent.
The British Medical Journal published the research. In all, 36 bladder cancer patients and 108 other people took part. During training, all the dogs reportedly even identified(認出)a cancer in a person who had tested healthy before the study. Doctors found a growth on the person’s right kidney (腎).
Carolyn Willis says dogs could help scientists identify the combined (合成) chemicals produced by bladder cancer. That information could then be used to develop machines to test for the chemicals. The team also plans to use dogs to help identify markers for other kinds of cancer.
( )34. What’s the general idea of the text?
A. Dogs have a good sense of smell B. Dogs can help cure cancer
C. Dogs can smell cancer D. Dogs help perform experiments
( )35. According to the text, people who suffer bladder cancer_________.
A. often have urine with unusual smell B. probably like smoking in their life
C. can easily make dogs lie down D. are likely to die within nine years
( )36. The underlined word “involved” in the text is closest in meaning to _________.
A. showed B. proved C. used D. preferred
( )37. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Dogs can only smell bladder cancer.
B. Dogs have a good knowledge of cancer.
C. Scientists might invent some machines to test cancer.
D. Cancer doesn’t have any sign in the beginning.
