"Mummy, I don't know what to play with." Steve stops his mother, who is talking to a friend, for the fourth time. “You've got a room full of toys!" his mother says, impatiently. In fact it is the jumble of toys which is to blame for four-year-old Steve's having no interest in his dolls, cars and animals. Each morning he pours three washing baskets of toys all over his floor, pulls out something and shortly after that, he is standing at his mother's desk or following her into the kitchen saying, "Mummy, I am bored."
A family therapist(心理醫(yī)生) explains why children lose interest when they have a whole “toy shop” at home. “According to their brain development, little children are not in a position to judge the quality of different kinds of things at once. There is always just one favorite toy for the moment. All the rest are left lying about." What can parents do to stop their children from being oversupplied with toys? Simply make something disappear without the child's knowledge. If he/she takes no more notice of a toy, a parent can ask if it can be stored or given away. Of course the child will always say he/she wants it then!
Lyn is the mother of four-year-old Jessie, and we like her way. A small set of shelves in her child's room holds the toys and books that are the new favourites. When it seems to her that her daughter is tired of these toys, they put them away in a box together and select some other toys from a cupboard in another room. The box of “ol
d” toys goes into the cupboard. When her child says she is "bored", they also get something from her cupboard -- it may be something she has had for some time but because she hasn’t seen it for a while it is almost like a new toy.
Some favourite toys stay out all the time, and there is a collection of dolls which sits in the comer, but in this way Lyn has found that she has fewer toys to put away at the end of the day and her daughter always has something “fresh” to play with.
57. Steve stops his mother several times because______.
A. he felt uninterested in his toys B. he disliked his mother's friend
C. he didn't have enough toys to play with D. he hoped his mother would play with him
58. According to the therapist, children often say they have nothing to play with because______.
A. they can't play alone for a long time
B. they are too young to play with so many toys
C. they are too lazy to pick out their favourites
D. they don't have the ability to value too many things at a time
59. What does the underlined word "jumble" mean in Chinese?
A. 單一的選擇 B.雜亂的一堆 C.普通的外觀 D.相同的形狀
60. Which is the advice given to parents in the text?
A. Buy fewer toys for their children.
B. Form good habits for their children.
C. Put some toys away without telling their children.
D. Spare some time to play with their children.

Edgar felt quite excited at the thought of his first swim of the summer. With the sun shining down so st
rongly, the sea was certain to be warm enough. He walked quickly along the sea front towards the steps that led on to the sands. He smiled cheerfully at the people. He had just smiled and waved his hat to an elderly lady when a man with a camera caught his arm and stopped him. Edgar heard a little buzzing noise ("咝"的響聲) from the camera.
“Your photo, sir, in bright colour in just one moment if you please," said the man.
Then the buzzing stopped, and the cameraman handed the photo over, and Edgar saw the bright blue his shirt half filling the picture.
“Seventy pence, sir," the man said.
“Seventy pence," Edgar repeated, “For this photo?”
“They're normally eighty-five, sir, but for one person I make a cut-price offer. It's the best price you'll get in Chadwell."
“You'll have to make a better offer." Edgar said. It was a good photo though, he thought, so bright and clear. His hat was held high, and he was smiling happily at the old lady, whose arm and handbag came into a lower comer. He had had no idea that he was being pictured. He thought he was really quite a good-looking man.
“That's as good as any studio job that would cost you pounds," said the cameraman. “It's better in a way because it's so natural. Only seventy pence, sir."
“I've never paid so much for a photo in my life. It isn't worth that kind of money. It's not as if I need the thing. Look, I'll give you twenty-five."
"No, I can't do that. Each of these colour photos costs me 50p — that's the price of the blank frame(像紙), so you see ...
"No, No," Edgar broke in. "You want a profit(利潤) of forty per cent. Well, I'll give you your 50p and that's that."
“Let me see, then." The man suddenly took the photo out of Edgar's hand.? “I can't spend any more time on it with you. It's 70p or I keep it."
“Keep it," Edgar said. He turned, looked out to sea, and then walked quickly away.

When Alesia Reuis was nine years old, she had an accident that left her unable to walk for years. Now Alesia is telling the story of the first day she walked again.
I remember the very first time I walked by myself. My sister Alexis was in high school then. She was on the basketball team, and she was going to take me to her practice. She went to drive the car to the front door for me while I was sitting in my room, but we were going t
o be late, so I said to myself, “Let me help her out a little.” I decided I would try to walk to the front door.
Nobody else was home, so I had to do it by myself. I was a .little afraid, but I wanted to do it, so I pushed up off the arms of my wheelchair and stood up. There wasn't going to be anything for me to hold on to because if I leaned over(傾身) to catch the table, I would fall. So I put my mind on walking and nothing else, and I just took a step, and another one, and then about three more, and I was at the door of my room. I stood against the wall and started smiling. I was so happy I'd made it that far. I looked up to heaven(上天)and said, “Thank you.”
I stayed there for a minute. I was hoping I wouldn't have anything
wrong with my knee, so I practiced moving it a little bit, and then I started across the living room. I looked straight ahead, and I made it to the next wall, and I said “Thank you” again. Then I had to walk just a few more steps to get to the door — and I did it! I said, "I made it, I made it, thank you!" I looked out to see where Alexis was. She was driving to the house. She was so surprised that I was standing there waving at her. She laughed happily and gave me a great big hug.
