Can you speak to dolphins? Of course you can but you won’t be able to understand them! We interviewed a biologist and asked her what research on dolphin communication has shown. This is what she told us.
Just like dogs, cats and other mammals, dolphins communicate by using sound, vision (視覺), touch and taste. Each dolphin has its own signature whistle to identify itself and to call others. Dolphins don’t have the ability to smell, but their hearing and eyesight are excellent.
We also asked Jane if dolphins have got their own language. She told us that they have and that dolphins started talking to each other from birth. They make different sounds, including whistles, squeaks and click. Sometimes they even sound like a heavy metal band!
We then asked Jane if any interesting experiments have been done. She told us that a very interesting experiment had been done with a mother dolphin and her two-year-old baby in an aquarium. They talked to each other over the telephone! The two dolphins were in separate tanks which were connected by a special under water system. Unfortunately the biologists couldn’t understand what the dolphins were talking about because they haven’t been able to decode (轉換) dolphin language yet. However, it was very clear that the dolphins knew what they were talking about.
Finally we asked Jane if there was hope that we would be able to understand dolphins in the near future. She told us that she and her team have been listening to dolphins for more than 17 years, using special equipment to record and analyze their language. Unfortunately they haven’t been able to decode it yet, but who knows — maybe one day we’ll get a phone call from a dolphin.

After spelling out rare (罕見的) Chinese characters like “影戤 (ying gai, meaning to make fake goods)” correctly, Chen Keyu, 13, from Jiangsu, became the winner of CCTV’s 2014 Dictation Assembly of Chinese Characters (漢字聽寫大會) on Oct 3.
How could someone at such a young age memorize (記憶) so many uncommon Chinese characters? Chen surely has his secret ways.
First you have to love reading. Chen has a shelf (書架) filled with books on Chinese culture, science and inspirational (勵志的) stories. After entering middle school, he added philosophy (哲學) and history to his book list. Guess what his favorite is recently? It’s Zhuangzi!
Second, you need to have your own way of memorizing. Chen used to be a big dinosaur fan when he was younger. But the boy soon found it was hard to remember the difficult names of dinosaurs. He then thought out a way. He first checked a dictionary to get the correct meaning of the new character. Then he used the character to create an idiom (短語) or sentence to help him memorize. During the dictation competition, Chen created over 200 idioms with uncommon characters to help his teammates memorize them. Although he reads a lot, Chen is not a bookworm (書呆子). In his teachers’ eyes, he is a smart boy, who never did extra work but was always top on grades.
“I think the key is he likes thinking,” said Xu Yiwen, a teacher of Chen.
Chen’s dream is to become a philosopher because he thinks philosophy can explain everything. His ultimate (終極的) task, he said, is to answer the questions like “who am I” and “Why do I live”. What an ambition (雄心)!
