Do you know HFMD? It’s short for Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease. This year, in China, thousands of children were suffering from it. What’s HFMD? How to prevent it? Now, read the passage please.
HFMD usually affects babies who are 1~4 years old, but adults can also be infected. Both EV71 and Cox A16 can cause HFMD, which usually starts with a slight fever followed by blisters (水泡) and ulcers (潰瘍) in the mouth and rashes (皮疹) on the hands and feet.
It can be spread through people with the mucus (唾液) or feces (糞便) of an infected person. It usually appears during the summer and autumn months. HFMD isn’t Bird Flu, SARS or Mad Cow Disease, but it’s not a new one, either. It first appeared in New Zealand in 1957. About forty years later, it appears in Asia. It’s reported that it breaks out every 2 or 3 years.
HFMD is very terrible and there is no vaccine (疫苗) now, but we can do something helpful to prevent it. ‘Children with HFMD should seek medical treatment as early as possible’, experts say. They also suggest that parents keep the air fresh in a child’s room, which should be kept clean, tidy and dry. Children should be taught to wash their hands regularly. Every time you turn on the television or take a ride in a car ,you could be adding to a problem called acid rain(酸雨). In this article, you’ll learn how acid is created, and how it affects us, and more importantly, what we all can do to prevent it.
How is acid rain created?
When people use fuels(燃料), such as coal and gasoline, poisonous gases are given off. When these gases mix with rain, acid rain forms. Cars and trucks also send these gases into the air when they burn gasoline .When rain mixes with these gases, harmful things called acids form. This is acid rain.
How does acid rain affect us?
Acid rain damages(毀壞)everything that it touches. It poisons our rivers, ponds, lakes, and oceans along with all the life in them. It pollutes our soil and crops, harms trees, and can even kill fish and plants. Acid rain also eats away at buildings.

Jessie felt her life so boring one summer day. She was tired of watching TV, she read all her books, and her friends were on vacation. She wanted something different to do. Suddenly, she saw the lawn mower(割草機) sitting in the yard.
“Mom,” she shouted, “I think I will mow the lawn.” Her mom ran into the yard and said, “Oh no, you don’t. You’re too young to mow the law.”
“I’m fourteen years old and know how to do it,” Jessie said. “Besides, it would help Dad out, and he won’t have to worry about it over the weekend.”
Mom thought for a while and then decided to let Jessie give it a try. After all, she was home and would keep an eye on her. Jessie already knew how to start the lawn mower from watching her dad. Jessie checked the gas(汽油) to make sure it was full, and put on her gardening gloves to protect her hands. Mom watched from the kitchen window. Jessie really does know how to mow the lawn. She was very careful around the flowers and trees. When she finished, she felt so good, but she was so hot. Mom brought her some ice tea and said, “You sure did a great job. Dad will be very surprised.”
Later that day, Dad came home and said to Jessie’s mom, “You didn’t have to mow the lawn. I was going to do it on Saturday. It looks great. Thanks.”
“I didn’t mow it. Jessie did.”
“Wow, our little girl is growing up!” Dad told Jessie what a great job she had done.
“It was fun, and I will do it again next week,” said Jessie.
The neighbor next door came by and asked Jessie if she wanted to mow his lawn and make some money. “Sure!” said Jessie. Jessie began mowing his lawn. Two other neighbors asked so, then another three.
