Let children learn to judge their own work.A child learning to talk does not learn by being correct-ed all the time:if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He noticed a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use.Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people's.In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught to walk, run, ride a bicycle. But in school we never give a child to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him.We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to.Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.

If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in maths or science, give him the answer book.Let him correct his own papers. Why should our teachers waste time on much routine(日常的)work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can't find the way to get the right answer.Let the children learn what all educated person must some day learn, how to measure their own under-standing, how to know what they know or do not know.

1.Why shouldn't we continuously correct a child's mistakes while he is talking?

2.How does the writer think children usually learn to walk, run, climb, and so on?

Farmer Ed Rawlings smiles as he looks at his orange trees. The young oranges are growing well in Florida’s weather.Warm sunshine and gentle rains, along with Ed Rawlings’ expert care, will produce a good crop(收成)of oranges this year.

However, Ed has to guard against Florida’s changeable winter weather. In January and February, temperatures can destroy Ed’s entire orange crop.Having farmed in Florida for the past 35 years, Ed is prepared for the frost(霜).When temperatures drop below freezing, Ed tries to save his crop by watering his orange trees. The water freezes and forms a thin layer(層)of ice around the trees.Strange as it may sound, this thin layer of ice actually keeps the fruit warm.

What happens is simple. When the trees are watered, the water loses heat and becomes ice.The warmth of the heat it loses is taken in by the fruit and keeps its temperature at a safe level.Ed has effectively used this method to save many orange crops.

But Ed still faces difficulties. The trees must be watered at the exact moment the temperature drops to the freezing point. Also, just the right quantity(數(shù)量)of water must be used.Too much water can form a thicker layer of ice that will break the tree’s branches(樹枝).Another difficulty is that wind blows away the heat, so Ed has to worry about not only when but also how often his trees should be watered, and how much water should be used.

Computer technology may help Ed with some of these worries. With equipment(設(shè)備), air and soil temperatures and wind speed can be measured. The information is fed into a computer which can calculate(計算)when the temperature will drop below freezing. The computer can correctly decide the quantity of water to be used and how frequently()the trees should be watered.Ed finds looking after his orange trees a lot easier with the help of a computer, and, his customers will have the benefits(利益)of computer-age oranges.

Every morning, the newspaper chief editor(主編) holds a meeting with the reporters. They discuss the main events(事件) of the day. Reporters are then sent to cover the events.
As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. Checking information is very important. They go to the newspaper's own library to look up any information that they need. This is called “doing one's homework”.
At the same time, the picture editor decides which photographs will be used for the next day's paper. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. Reporters have to stop working on one story and start working at once on the important new one. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. Later in the day, everything is put together at the news desk. Reporters return, type their stories into the computer and hand them to the editor.
The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the front page. Sometimes this will have to be changed if something more important happens late in the day. Other editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes.
Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories, and the time for printing(印刷) the newspaper has come. This is done on fast-moving printing machines. The newspapers are then delivered(發(fā)送) by truck, plane or rail. Speed is important. People want to buy the latest newspaper; nobody wants to buy yesterday's.
