Andrew Carnegin was born in Scotland (蘇格蘭). He came to America in 1848 when he was thirteen years old. His family was very poor (窮). Because of this, Andrew could not go to school.
Andrew loved reading. But he could not buy any books. And there was no library for him to use. One day a rich man (富人) asked Andrew to come to his house. There Andrew found a good library (圖書(shū)館). When he read the rich man's books, Andrew made a promise (諾言).“Someday,”he said,“I will be rich, too. I will build libraries for everyone to use.”
Andrew Carnegin later became rich. He did not forget his promise. He gave a lot of money to help build almost 3,000 libraries. Many of these libraries were in small towns. With Mr Carnegin's help, these towns had many libraries.
Today the government (政府) helps to build more and more libraries and more and more people are using them.
