Last week Lu visited England. He stayed with my grandmother. He found it was strange.
‘I don’t know why, but I frightened your grandmother a lot. When I arrived, I gave her a purse from Dongtai. She looked in it and asked me to take it back. Then I saw a red spider (蜘蛛) on the table, and I killed it for her. She seemed very unhappy. Do English people like spiders?
‘Later we went shopping. Someone was painting a shop front, so there was a ladder. Grandmother stopped me from walking under it and said I must walk around it. I liked the shops and bought some lovely rose soap for my mother, a smart umbrella for my father and some new shoes for myself. When we got back, I put the shoes on the table and opened the umbrella to check if it was all right. Your grandmother came in and screamed!
‘Then I broke a small mirror in the bathroom. Your grandmother’s face went white. I felt very sorry. When I left, I gave your grandmother some flowers. She counted and there were 13. She didn’t like them.’
I explained to Lu, ‘My grandmother follows the old customs. You must not give someone an empty purse, or they will have no money. You must not kill a “money spider”, or the same will happen. Also it is very unlucky to walk under a ladder or put new shoes on the table. An open umbrella in a house means someone will die. Breaking a mirror brings seven years’ bad luck, and 13 is also a very unlucky number. You were really making my grandmother very afraid.’

Then I saw a red spider (蜘蛛) on the table, and I killed it for her. She seemed very unhappy以及最后一段中You must not kill a “money spider”, or the same will happen.可以看出,在英國,人們覺得有些蜘蛛是錢的象征,代表著好運氣。故選D。
3.推理判斷題。根據(jù)短文最后一段中An open umbrella in a house means someone will die.可知,在房子里面撐傘意味著有人要死了,是很不吉利的。因此我們可以推斷出,當(dāng)作者的奶奶看到Lu的傘的時候,她應(yīng)該是感到非常害怕的。故選C。
4.推理判斷題。根據(jù)and 13 is also a very unlucky number可知A說的是對的;根據(jù)Also it is very unlucky to walk under a ladder or put new shoes on the table.可知B也是對的;根據(jù)Breaking a mirror brings seven years’ bad luck,可知C是對的。根據(jù)You must not give someone an empty purse, or they will have no money.

Cause and effect is one way to explain things that happen around us. Many things happen because something caused or influenced them to happen. Sometimes it is hard to look at a cause and find out what causes the effect. It may help you to start with the effect and use your reasoning (推理的) skills. Think about all the things you know that could be reasons for the effect you can see.
For example, you may see someone putting on a heavy jacket. This is the effect. To look for a cause, think to yourself, “What would make someone put on a heavy jacket?” Maybe the person is going outside into very cold weather. Maybe the person works in the penguin pen (企鵝圈養(yǎng)地) at Sea World. Maybe the person is going to visit an ice skating rink where the air is kept very cold. All of these things could be a cause for putting on a heavy jacket.
Now, think about a second example. The effect is a boy named Tony has to go to the head teacher’s office. What are the possible causes? Maybe he fought with another student. Maybe he is just being picked up early. Maybe he is being given a prize!
Here is another example for you to think about its cause and effect. Carol,13,was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around a bit,but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the hall light for quite a while. Little brothers can be very strange, but this was really much too strange. Carol didn’t know what to do. Just then, Carol’s father appeared and explained that Doug was sleepwalking. What’s the cause and effect, could you tell?
1.According to the second paragraph, which of the following is an effect?
A. Someone puts on a heavy jacket.
B. Someone works in the penguin pen.
C. Someone will go outside into cold weather.
D. Someone will go to visit an ice skating rink.
2.Tony has to go to the head teacher’s office. Which of the following isn’t the possible cause?
A. He fought with another student. B. He is going shopping.
C. He is being picked up early. D. He is being given a prize.
3.What was Doug doing when his sister Carol tried to fall asleep?
A. He was going outside. B. He was reading a story.
C. He was sleepwalking. D. He was looking for his dad.
4.Which of the following is cause and effect?
A. Tony got up and had a glass of water.
B. We came home and found him sleeping.
C. The ball was lost and a window was broken.
D. Tim was late again and his teacher got angry.

If you lose 12 times in a row (連續(xù)地), will you just give up? Dale Carnegie, a pioneer in public speaking and self-development, kept trying. And he became famous by showing people how to be successful.
Carnegie was born into a poor family in the United States. The boy didn’t see a train until he was 12 years old. In his teens, he had to get up at 3 am every day to milk the cows for his family.
When Carnegie first entered college, he felt upset because of his ragged (破舊的) clothes and ordinary(平凡的) looks. His mother encouraged him, “Why not try to be better in other things instead of just dress and good looks?”
Carnegie tried to be more active in college. He joined the debate (辯論) team. But one after another, he lost 12 competitions. The young man was very disappointed with himself. He said later that he thought of killing himself after failing so many times. But soon Carnegie was seen practicing public speaking on the riverside. His hard work paid off at last. In 1906, Carnegie won a famous speech contest and became well-known. “Believe that you will succeed, and you will,” he said.
In order to share his success, Carnegie opened schools and wrote books. His best-sellers(暢銷書) include How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. More than 50 million copies of his books have been translated in 38 languages. They are still helping people on the road to success.
